How does the game fit the theme?
Just some odd stuff in an odd forest. Just a first level to be worked on later

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
all was by hand from the graphics to the music and sound effects (yeah, those where real sounds) to the programming.

I liked the narrative context of the game coupled with the visuals in the first visual novel style part. As for the game itself it actually felt pretty good! It may not seem like much but if it's intuitive and it feels great than expanding upon it is way easier. I feel like if you had more time with way more complex levels it could have been a complete experience. I know how hard it is to approach an engine and to work on your first game, in fact we did the same for this game jam. If you have time please check our game and give us some feedback!

First of all, congrats on your first game! The visuals are very good and definitely grab attention. Gameplay-wise, you’ve established a core gameplay loop, which is a great start. From here, the next step is building more around that core idea. Either way, you’ve taken a big first step. Nice work!

Nice game. It seems you have prioritised making the art + music of the game instead of a game. Hope you fix it

Developer

I mean, fair enough. I will say that I actually spent like double the time on the actual coding and learning how to use the engine as opposed to the art and the music. I sent maybe 4-5ish hours on the art, and an hour-ish on the music and about 12 hours straight watching and learning different tutorials and 3 hours making the itch page and struggling to export the file. I will take it as a compliment that you think I spent most of my time on art though. That just so happens to be where my talents lie. I hadn't even really touched a game engine before the Jam started,  This project was really just a personal challenge  to see if I could actually make a game that people didn't completely hate.

I am confused, after killing the 5 enemies in Level One, I stuck there and nothing happened anymore.

Developer

Hey! Thanks for playing my game! Unfortunately since this was my first game ever, I wasn't able to finish the game with a true dedicated ending screen, so once you defeat the 5 enemies, that is actually the end of the game. Once the Jam concludes, I will publish the full first level and the second level.

This is honestly an amazing game especially for a first game!😊

You did such a great job i really loved that you created the arts and music from scratch that makes it even more impressive keep going you have so much potential 👍👍

Great work!💕

Well done on getting your first game out! That's a HUGE milestone! And all the more impressive that you built the game AND did all the art and sound in the week that you had. I really liked your art style too. Best of luck with the other levels :)

Your first game? That’s amazing! I really liked the art style and the shooting mechanics felt super smooth.

One tip:  you might want to look into how to rotate just the arms (using separate layers) instead of the whole body when aiming. It’ll make the animations feel much more natural!

Overall, for a first project, this is really impressive work. Great job! 🚀

Interesting game. I liked the story and gameplay.

Submitted

Cool game, and the story seems interesting! Also, I really like the art! After shooting all the targets, nothing happened. Was that a bug or intentional?

Developer(+1)

No, unfortunately that is as far as I was able to get in the jam, the woes of a solo dev.  After/right before the Jam ends I will drop the polished version with the 1st chapter/level finished and maybe even the second chapter if I feel really motivated. I wrote five-ish levels of material,  so there is a lot more story to come.  I just really underestimated the time it would take to learn game dev from stratch lol.

Game dev can be hard. Its impressive what you managed to do even with learning game dev from scratch!

Intriguing story. It looks like, to stop the fever, you will eventually need to beat the hare boss.

I’m impressed with your versatile skills: it’s super hard to do coding, art, and sound design all by yourself. Regarding the controls, shooting with the LMB would be handy.

Developer

Thank you so much! It was certainly a labor of love.  I've discovered normal controls just might be my weak spot though since I keep getting similar suggestions. I did this all on a laptop so I didn't realize how odd this was to play on a PC.

More waves would have been cool! other than that for a  this is great for a first game! keep up the good work!

Submitted

Oh, I was hoping for more after killing the first wave :D The art was cool, Shooting on Space is weird, though, fits the theme I guess hah

Submitted

took my a while to realize that just the first round is implemented, right?

otherwise great first game!

Developer

Yep, Just one round.  As soon as I figure out a wave mechanics there will be more rounds. It's proving to be more complicated than I thought, but Ideally the first two chapters will release after the Game Jam finishes.

Nice aesthetics and art, I also like the idea of pressing left and right to talk with the characters, such a simple trick to make me more engaged in the conversation. From one sleep deprived student to another, great work! :)

Submitted

hey there, it’s a nice idea you got there. i really like the visuals and audio in it. from the gameplay perspective it’s nice and simple, maybe i’d add an option to shoot from the mouse when you already use it for aim but it’s still fine as is. also it would be nice to have some sort of border to prevent the player going off screen.

overall nice start of a project :D

Submitted

Nice art style! The color pallet works well for the game

Submitted

i thought i broke the game so its just the first round right?

Developer(+1)

yeah, that is as far as I was able to complete it in the time frame. The next update will have an ending screen and probably a few waves.

Submitted

The postcard aesthetic worked really well for the game. Definitely enjoyed the theme you picked.

Submitted

Enjoyment: Nice little story bit for the upcoming survival bullet shooting. It's clear where you'd like to go from here and provides fun for a quick session.

Gameplay: Easy controls, straight forward goal. Solid effort! Some sort of borders, maybe the trees to prevent running of the screen, would be nice ?

Innovation: Nothing to new, probably much potential to iterate upon.

Theme: Strange place to setup such camp, knowing what is lurking in the forest. Feels like an appropriate application of the theme.

Visuals: Consistent throughout and created during the jam, well done!

Audio: Suitable soundtrack for the feel and play.

Congratulation on the submission , keep up the good work!

Fun game and the start of what could be something very cool and (pardon the pun) campy. I actually like going back and forth between the dialog kinda makes it feel like flipping the pages of a book and could maybe incorporate that into the GUI if you had more time.
