Your layout design is cool! I really dig it.
However, I cannot read this very well-- the contrast in general is relatively poor in my opinion and I found my eyes glazing over trying to parse it intitally. The text is also relatively small? Not accessible... please consider making a plain text version with no fancy formatting. Your visually impaired friends (like me) will thank you!
The things on the side of the PDF (the white background with black text) seem a bit ....well, scronched! They're a little squished. You might want to choose a different font that is a bit darker or has more contrast, too.
Otherwise, the design work is super neat. I like the punk sort of style, and white text on black IS very cool, so for those with not bad eyes, I'm sure they'll appreciate this more than me.
My first thought looking at this was 'I am not good at reading arrow' and 'this is a bit sronched.' The way things are laid out is neat; however, it makes things a little difficult to follow. I found trying to wrap my head around the flow of this mission hard for this reason.
I really like how this has its own rules in it, and that you provided a bunch of random tables. I love a random table <3! The ASCII cat also made me really happy to see. Did you make it yourself?
This mission has the aesthetics it wants down pat, and I respect that. Making a coherent consistent theme for a piece is hard but you've done a great job. I didn't give this a 5/5 more due to the readability issues than anything else-- on its own, this rules.
Suggestions:
- please make a plain non-fancy layout version
- more contrast or just heavier font (to make it easier to read)
- the arrows confused me, so maybe try a few other layout ideas for that? you don't have to nix the arrows totally, just maybe try a different setup
Overall, this mission oozes aesthetic, and seems like a self contained piece-- I am eager to try it. (:
Yeah, I initially was working on it in plain text, but I ended up editing a lot while doing the fancy layout, and ran out of time to get the changes back into the markdown file before the deadline. I have now, but unfortunately can't add a file until the judging is over. I'll have to remember that next time I do a jam. It definitely got pretty scronched in there. Version 2 is gonna have more breathing room, and hopefully a more legible layout, in addition to having a plain text version.
And I did not make the cat. I got it from this site. Honestly, it might've been a mistake, since I ended up liking it, didn't want to cover it up, and that probably lead to things being even more scrunched than they had to be.
Anywho, thanks for the feedback!
P.S. I Just realized while typing this message that just because I can't add files to the itch page now, that doesn't mean I can't share plain text with you, so here's a paste of the markdown file, if you want it. The link will self-destruct in a couple weeks, after I'm able to upload the file to itch here.
The layout just blew my mind, I'd love to know what software you're using and how you learned it because I've been trying to amp up my project layouts. The mini system in the back has some really fun ideas I'll probably lift from the next time I do a cyberpunk game, and while the mission itself is pretty straightforward I can see it working well as the start of a campaign, something that gets the players together.
Thank you! I actually did all of the layout in LibreOffice Impress (basically powerpoint, I'm sure windows or google docs versions of the concept would do just as well). I really would've liked to have spent more time on the mission itself, but I didn't get started until like two days before the deadline.
That's so cool, I also do my layout in presentation software right now (google slides) but I'm trying to teach myself Affinity. Aspiring to your level of design skill.
Aww, thank you! ^_^ This is actually my first time trying something like this, and it wasn't really my plan at the outset, but I happened to be watching this video over the weekend and got inspired or something.
Your layout work is absolutely incredible! It's an absolute delight to read through. You also make good use of the urban exploration theme. However, I don't think you make great use of the "drone war" theme. Your take on the "drone war" needs to more embedded into the scenario.
The mission is straight forward for the system that you've paired it with, but the actual mission itself is maybe a little too basic and straightforward. Just escape into the night market and get away from the cops. It could really use some kind of antagonist threat that ratchets up the tension and pushes things forward for the escape. Or you introduce some side objectives that incentivize the players to see all the dungeon areas. The random encounter table is pretty solid.
>However, I don't think you make great use of the "drone war" theme.
Completely fair. I didn't really write it with that in mind, and didn't add that to the thing until aftwerwards, when I was reading and reviewing some of the other submissions, and saw that some of their theme usages were also kinda tenuous
I was quite pressed for time to get it done under the deadline, since I started so late, but I'm thinking I might do a version 2, where the Hunter-Seeker drones are more of an actively pursuing threat, rather than just another random encounter on the table, and where there's more connections between the different inhabitants of the undercity, and side distractions. But that version won't be a two evening, one-sheet affair, I'm sure. Thank you so much for the feedback!
