How does the game fit the theme?
Following the game’s theme of ‘Strange Places’, Nani Ka Ghar starts off unassuming. Maia, the main character, moves around her grandmother’s home, interacts with objects and solves puzzles. However, secrets are revealed and Maia stumbles upon a mysterious door; clearly there is more than what meets the eye to the home Maia grew up in.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Brackeys’ YouTube tutorials were used to assist the coding process. All the art in the game is original. The sfx were sourced from Pixabay and the BGM is sourced from YouTube; the attributions are listed on the game’s webpage with credits linked.

Really nice visuals, a nice story, and chilling music. The puzzles are cool too, and the game will definitely get even better with further polish. Solid work!

Very beautiful game with a great great greaaaat atmosphere. Just be careful, I think we can go out of screen in the very beginning (bottom of the screen). Anyway good job it's very great !

The art and visuals are outstanding, I had fun going through the puzzles, the music made it feel like I was there.

Somethings to consider, would have love to move diagonally too, some collision fixes also appreaciated.

Other than that, congratz to the team for making such a nice game

The art and animation in this are seriously beautiful. The house feels so lived-in, and the whole desi/fantasy vibe comes through really strongly; it feels nostalgic even if you didn't grow up in that exact setting. I also liked the little hidden puzzles and how the story builds that quiet grief mood while you're exploring. The atmosphere is established very well, and I'm definitely interested to see where you take it next.

I quite liked the art of the game and the gameplay itself was simple but fitting for this kind of genre. As others have mentioned the bugs are a problem. and in fact i got a game breaking bug for which i started walking in the air. I'm sure that with more development time and no bugs it can be great!

Really great art and music! I think the side walking animations has been set in reverse though. The order of the frames is played backwards and it looks like character is moonwalking. Other then that really cool game.

The art of this game is so good

The gameplay had some bugs that made it a bit challenging to play and I see most comments talk about the same things; I really hope you manage to work on this and fix it up after the jam.

Overall this was really nice and the art style really is very good.

Good job!

It's a shame that such a pretty game and gorgeous game is held back by bugs that soft locked me twice :c

A lot of people already mentioned the bugs so I won't dwell on it. It's a pretty game that to tries to tell a intriguing narrative in a intriguing setting. It's the world that everyone hates. POTENTIAL! Probably getting a 1 more experienced programmer on the team could make the difference, but don't give up on it just cause a few bugs have filtered some people out!

Thank you for your response! The feedback has been very helpful and also encouraging. We built his game while managing a lot of things at once, and had to submit it before we could sort out the bugs. However, it's so good to hear you enjoyed the story and other parts of the game because it definitely motivates us to go back into this with a lot more energy and time to improve it.  We'll get back to you with a new and improved experience ☺️

This was a good game with absolutely beautiful art and an interesting story that left me wanting for more. I liked it quite a lot, but there were a few bugs. It looks like you might continue this in the future, so here they are in case you want to fix them:

1. While going up the stairs, I somehow accidentally walked into the wall and could walk through it. I did manage to get out though.

2. The collisions felt a just a bit weird, like they didn't fit perfectly with the environment.

3. There were some overlapping issues where Maia was over things she shouldn't be.

4. You can go off screen and completely loose Maia.

5. I was able to accidentally interact with things while already interacting with something. Ex: opening the code for the chest while I was still looking at the fortune teller thing.

Additionally, in an isometric game, moving in the usual four directions can be a bit annoying when most of the time, you're moving diagonally. Also, I'm not sure if you're allowed to use another game's music in your own game. For me, the genshin impact music didn't really fit as it sounded happy, when the game seems to have more sad themes. But it could also just be that I'm biased and am used to hearing the song in the context of genshin impact.

Otherwise, the game has a lot of potential and I'd be interested in seeing it continued!

Soo happy to hear you loved the game. We are working on the bugs and improving the overall game so that it is longer and more engaging. We'll get back to you with an improved version soon!

Felt very nostalgic playing this, the ending message was a good cliffhanger.. looking forward to shakuni mama vs bhanji in the next part haha (maybe we finally get to access Nani's room then?). Loved the music & culture put together with this game, great job guys!

There were a few bugs here & there but I was able to work my way around it. It is kind of difficult to sort objects into layers when you work with single image for background (which were very beautifully drawn, bdw) so I would recommend exporting individual layers (in case you drew these digitally with layers) and sort them.

Nevertheless very nostalgic & personal experience!

Developer

Honestly, so happy to hear you were nostalgic while playing this. That is the one emotion we wanted players to feel while in this game world. Also, thank you for the tip about the layers. Makes so much sense! We'll get back to you with an improved and more engaging version of the game soon!

Lovely story and the art style is very painterly and pretty!

Heartfelt little game.  I loved the art style and the music.  I walked around the house and looted what I could, but found myself confused about what to do.  I found the kitchen and my own room, and was barred from Nani's.  I'm not sure if I missed a key  location.

Nice job!

Hi, happy to hear you enjoyed the game! Did you interact with the different items? The notebook in the room gives clues about the next task. Hope that helps!

Such a lovely game! the art is incredible, great job

The game looks beautiful, but it really needs diagonal movement. Also, when walking through doorways, it looks like you're standing on top of the wall rather than inside the opening

Submitted(+3)

The art is great, the letters and the handmade dialogues are just great. But there are several bugs with collisions that do not greatly affect the gameplay.

Submitted(+3)

The art is so very well done!
The controls however need to be improved for sure, as take away a lot of fun from exploring

the art style is fantastic!

Funny visual, But I didn't like the controls that you can't walk diagonally

The visuals of this game were beautiful and the story was heartfelt. I also like the little puzzles throughout. There were a areas that need polishing though.

The UI seemed inconsistent. The "Return to Courtyard" button is how all the buttons should look. Instead, the main dialogue UI is in a more generic font and has a generic Next button. It also scrolled too slowly for me, and then clicking next made the text disappear.

When I reentered the courtyard everything refreshed, meaning I had a lot of bougainvillea flowers in my inventory by the end of the game, and I spoke to Mamu a few times on the same subject. Holding the rag under the tap made the interaction happen many times and repeat the wet rag text.

You can only move in four directions, but the staircase is diagonal so you have to do a lot of WAWAWAW tapping to get up the stairs. However, the animations on the character are nice. There was also no constraint on the bottom of the game area in the courtyard, so I wandered downwards for about 5 seconds off camera and had to walk back up for five seconds to get back on the screen.

When you stand up in the balcony the character is in front of the balustrade. It needs to be on a separate sorting layer that sits in front of the character so that they appear behind and not on top of it.

It also wasn't very strange until the last 30 seconds, and then faded to black rather than restarting or exiting the game which was a bit confusing.

It was only a short game, but I can see that it has potential. Good work!

Thank you for your feedback. We didn't get time to implement all UI assets, and yes, definitely need to fix the bugs, but I'm happy to hear you liked it regardless and see potential in the game. We are working on an improved version of the game and find the feedback really encouraging 🫶🏻
