The event and choice are well written. The background art was really neat. The ui may need a bit work to make it prettier and more integrated to the game but it’s minor and my personnal taste.

I notice 2 bugs:

  • you can walk on air in the mountain with the dash, going too far left make you leave the area (and you can’t walk back)
  • I did multiple run just to check this one that killed me one the first run just before the destination: There a forest event where you can meet a fae petting a horse. By showing yourself it say you should heal 3 point, but you actually lose them…..

Very beautiful artwork, well done!

really beautiful art, it's my first time encountering a nice bandit :)

the music was good too but it just stopped

Submitted (1 edit)

The premise is similar to our game, but implemented in a completely different way.
It's definitely interesting :)

The backgrounds and the character are really well drawn, and there's good use of parallax.
The music stopped playing at some point, but that's just a minor detail :)

Developer

Thank you for the kind feedback.

As for the music... I F*ed up as I loaded my track over the placeholder one and didn't put it on repeat... My bad, I'll fix it next week I guess.

Spent too much time clicking my capo against the table to make good click sounds to test the 3 minutes music loop 🤣

Thanks again

Cheers

Gorgeous art, honestly this was just a great game to look at. Background were amazing and the character had a lot of charm.

It's a fairly straight forward Oregon Trail like with decision making, but it suits the theme just fine. It took me two tries to get to the end.

I'm not sure how the events outcomes are set up, if they are predetermined or there are multi outcomes for any one single choice but at one stage I got robbed and decided to give up a "gem" this proceeded to give away all 10 of my gold and immediately kill me. I think most of the events were fairly well written and made sense but this one was a little harsh.

Nice work.

Developer

Since one of my friend's told me the bandit event could one shot you, I dread those comments.

I'm sorry. I didn't have the time to play test so I didn't catch this but losing all your money should not kill you (obviously)

The hairpin bandit is supposed to be quite nice 🙂

Thanks for the feedback, I'll make sure our artist sees it.

I'll have to revisit this one when I have more time to play it. I love the story elements, and decision making mechanic. The art is fantastic! Not sure why there is a jump button, but the portion of the game I played was enjoyable. The walking part of the game could be left out I think. You could make it more like the Oregon Trail by having the player walk the entire time and get stopped by the Narrator. Great job!

Developer

Thank you!

Feel free to come back ! We have some fixes on our to-do list next week so give us a little time and you'll have the game as good as it gets :)

Cheers

Great art! Tho the walking and jumping segment is somewhat tedious, maybe an autowalk function would nice or a way to skip the walking segments

Pretty nice looking game, I loved the character art and backgrounds.

Might be a little hard and need a few difficulty tweaks, I played so long the song ended and left me in silence but I eventually made it to the temple once I had a few goes and memorised some of the event outcomes.  For example, giving the bandit 10 gold always seems to be a game over because I'm not sure I encountered a way to gain any resources.

Developer(+1)

The dreaded hairpin bandit !

He's supposed to be nice and not kill you... Damn bandit.

The balance is sadly not done. I'll fix it next week if you want tou give it a try in march.

This was such a cute game! I really enjoyed the artistic styling of the environments and the character! I was a little disheartened to keep selecting bad events so I ended up just ignoring everything else because I wanted to make it to the end -- but maybe what they say about curiosity is true and it would have just killed me in the end ;; Or I am just supremely unlucky! I really loved the vibes with the music as well! I think a cute illustration of Yuna taking the nap at the end would have been a cherry on top, but I understand how crunch time forces you to make cuts! Fantastic work and well done!

-D

Developer

Hahaha! No you're right curiousity is a little bit too punished. We were so short on time that we all ad to write som events and I think we all wrote one or two ''curiosity will bite you on the butt'' 'cause it seemed fun. Since I did not balance the game as I wanted... Well... Curious people get hurt 🤕

Good idea for the end screen. I'll tell Benjhyy to draw some Yuna again just for you (I'm not kidding, we'll improve the game a little bit next week)

Cheers!

Good job for this game !

Art makes the small walking sequences worth it by themselves. It's just long enough to be contemplative. Combined to the event narration, it manage too build a word beautiful but dangerous.

I am a bit mixed about the event resolution though. Most of the time, on the event, I had the right answer was to not get involved with what's happening. Besides the chest who got me 6 coins once on two and half runs, it was always bad to be curious on the events I got. Maybe I was just unlucky, but I think taking a risk should sometimes reward you. I understand the design was mostly about mitigating the damage on your resources. But winning implies not involving with anything you come across, which goes a bit against the feeling of wonder you have when walking through the landscape. But all of this is hard to balance without playtesting a lot.

Music is cool but it wasn't looping nor starting again on restarting a run !

Developer

Hey ! Thx for the feedback :)

I was too short on time to properly balance the events you're right. It was planned that you would lose food each node to pressure the player in actually take risks.

Some outcomes reward those risks (running to the oasis for exemple) but without the food clock. Juste playing safe is enough to win sadly.

After taking such a long time recording the song. I did not made it loop as expected. F me ><

The art was so amazing! I loved the walking animation, everything was so perfectly drawn. Nicely done! I almost made it to the end three times but starved every time... turns out sprinting to safety was not the answer!

Developer

I'm actually very surprised that you can starve.

The balance is not done properly for the events so some strategies are pretty strong. For exemple if you take the 4 desert path (the shortest) and always go in town, you can play safe and dodge most of the events by just not getting involved. After that you have enough to win the game no matter what you do.

I wish I had 2 more hours to balance this, make the game more fair.

I'm really happy that you liked the art, I think Benjhyy bested himself on this game. I'm sure he'll feel the same.

Wow, the art in this one is beautiful! I can tell that a lot of time went into this. I also love the adventure/journey vibe with variable playthroughs and encounters. I do wish there was some more variations and some more strategic planning that went into what decisions I need to make at each location. There was also a time that I ran into the bandits and gave them the gold and I lost, but it says in the beginning that gold isn't required so I was confused by that. Well done overall, y'all should be proud :)

Developer

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback! I'll make sure our artist know you liked his work.

As for the events let's start with the obvious : the dreaded bandit encounter. It should not kill you to get to 0 gold. It's one of the bug we didn't see before submitting TT

I wish I had more time to spend on the games events. At first it was expected that each directions (left/right) of each biome gives you different expected returns. For exemple the forest/swamp biomes should be more food oriented. Desert should have been harsher but more present on shorter path.

We wrote all the events sunday night and I couldn't spend time balancing events outcomes.

Lastly you are supposed to lose food each node which would force the player to take risks.

2 hours more and all this would have been fixed but that's what you get when you start coding friday. :)

Cheers

Art is beautiful and the overall feeling of the game is great. It also hits the theme spot on.

I did miss a little bit the "game" component to it ; the choices at the end of each level lack a bit of strategic depth (feels like the outcome is random and you don't have much control around your management of resources for most of them).

As a contemplative experience it was great :)

Such incredible art and world design has gone into this! Really fun experience and such an aspirational entry from the art side! Well done!

Submitted

The sceneries are quite beautiful, and I loved that you get to climb the moutain. If I had to nitpick, I wish there were more ways to interact with the environment - unless I missed something, the walking part feels empty besides looking at the landscape… which is actually the core of hiking, so why not? But yeah, getting to click on some elements and read yuna’s thoughts would have been nice and help relate more to Yuna and their world. Regardless, good job on finishing that beautiful game!

wow!! beautiful game! it's really refreshing to see some well executed line-art games. the music was also fitting perfectly the atmosphere

the desing reminded me of "This war of mine" if that was the intention, congrats!!

As a suggestion, some visual feedback in the random encounter (I don't know, a dice or just turning the screen a bit green or red), but its just an idea.

nice work guys!!

The art is really, really good. The character design for yuna is really nice and cute. The game is very laggy though. It doesnt conflict with the gameplay so thats fine. Really cool!

The art of this game is absolutely breathtaking and well suited for the Jam's theme. The gameplay itself is based making decisions about random encounters unique to a given region. Strangely the paths that lead to the destination are uneven, some are shorter than the others, so if you want to see more of the game take the longer route. My only real issue is that the events felt a bit repetetive between regions in my two runs I've encountered Oasis event six times, and I've seen only one desert-themed event besides it, but that might be the luck of the draw. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, and I highly suggest to see all of the amaziningly drawn environments.
