well of course i already have a gblorb player installed

i'm surprised the illustrations didn't work in quixe!  i've definitely released a quixe game with illustrations before.  but i might've had to do something zany to make it work, i don't remember now

this is cool and otherworldly.  nice music too.  putting npcs in inform is always hard (probably why zork just takes place in a big cave system) so kudos for doing it anyway

i absolutely fell for the coin thing oops.  my text adventure instinct is to take everything that isn't nailed down, and make a good effort at taking everything that is

i think the total score is buggy somehow?  it increased by 1 every time i looked around the room.  the end said i got 42/42 though which i assume is correct

thanks for giving it a go!!  now i want to make another text adventure yahoo

Developer

Heck yes, I'm glad you enjoyed!  I had fun making that coin trick when I learned it was possible, too.
Oh strange, I wonder why the score increased by 1 and not 2, I was pretty sure I'd told it to only give a point one time but I must have missed something

Sounds like you found everything though, and I'm so glad it inspired you to want to make another text adventure!!

Oh dang! I wasn't aware that Inform had actual support for graphics and sound these days. That's cool. It actually adds a lot to the experience here, with the dreamlike quality of the setting and all. I also got tripped up by the dialogue system and by the coin thing, though I was able to figure out what to do about the coin.

This was a fun little experience, it's been some time since I've played an old-school interactive fiction title like this.

Developer

Heck yeah, I'm glad I could showcase that little known ability for inform 7!  I had to do a lot of learning on the go during the month I had, so I was really excited when I got sound and images to work in time.  Thank you, I'm glad it blended well with keeping that theme strong!

Oh gosh, yes the dialogue and coin were some last minute things I added, so definitely some of the first stuff I would go back to and work on when I get the chance after the jam!

Glad it was fun, I love keeping the old-school stuff alive!

I do not have the attention span for this style of text adventure anymore but I love the presentation and the fact that there’s a modern Inform dialect that supports graphics and music. I remember back in the day when The Lurking Horror had some (very limited) sound and there were graphical elements in Beyond Zork and Zork Zero, but I’ve not kept up with the modern era of IF.

Anyway the music’s pretty good, if repetitive, and the art has a cool vibe to it. If only I were in a better headspace to actually explore this little world you’ve carved out.

Developer

Zork was something I'd studied while making this story and learning Inform 7!  I wanted to capture that feeling of it being something like from around those days, so I'm glad this could remind you of those!

Hehe, and no worries!  Perhaps one day I could remake this game in something easier to explore, I'd like for it to be possible to just click stuff rather than type everything.

I'm glad I took the extra step of downloading and playing the game in Gargoyle, because the art and the music added so much to the already surreal and dreamlike vibe of the game's narrative. Lovely and evocative writing, I'm very glad to have played this!

Developer

heck yeah, I'm very happy to hear Gargoyle worked well for you!  Thank you, it means a lot to me knowing you enjoyed the experience!!

Submitted(+1)

i appreciate a real proper Text Adventure game, and your writing and art are very pleasant. yaY!

Developer

yay, thank you so much!  Heck, I'm really happy knowing you liked my writing and the art style I chose for this!

Submitted(+1)

I unfortunately don't feel like I made much progress beyond earning points for examining everything, but the flavor text for doing so has always been interesting. It really gets the sense of exploring a half-forgotten and mysterious world across!

Submitted(+1)

I'll admit, I really struggled to play this one. But what I was able to reach was well written and well detailed, and enjoyable. There's a lot of novelty to a text based instruction game and I appreciate it, but it definitely becomes a barrier to entry interface wise. Good stuff regardless

Seconding that playing this in Gargoyle was the right call. I liked this little vignette, very evocative.

This is a sweet little experience! Glad I sprung for the Gargoyle version - playing that really is the superior way to go through this. Yarrow really is fun entity to talk to, and the lore was really delightful. The colours of the game itself are also delightful; the magentas and purples give a real fitting dreamscape vibe to the entire situation. Solid writing, too!

I did want for a few more visuals - it would of been cool to see both the second room and the outside. I tripped up a few times in the game itself too - I didn’t realise until reading the comments here that the reason I couldn’t leave the room was because I’d taken the coins, nor that I could end the game by going north outside (I didn’t click that the relief from being outside was in part because I could now fly!)

I also could not figure out the correct syntax the game wanted for WHERE THIS IS/WHAT TO DO/GREETINGS - I definitely spent a good few minutes mashing every possible combination I could think of, though since I’m not usually a text adventure person I might just be missing something obvious.

Good job overall!

Developer(+1)

Oh!  If you try looking when you go to the second room, and the northern room, that should also display some images!  I couldn't figure out a way to have those display automatically in time for the jam, so it's easy to miss that!

And the chat with Yarrow is super specific, it requires you say something like "ask yarrow about greetings"!

Thank you so much, I'm really glad you enjoyed the story, and glad I stuck with it and finished my first game in the month we had, heck!

Whimsical. The dragon was super fun, it really felt like sharing the body of a playful and judgy entity. Navigation was a bit frustrating at time on the browser version (lots of back and forth and getting lost and forgetting where I came from and what I'd already tried, which ended with a lot of scrolling back up), but it was worth the effort just for the writing.

I'm not used to text based games. I was very intrigued by the setting, but couldn't figure out what to do after opening the metal door and examining everything in there. Is there something else I should be doing? I don't want to give it a rating until I know I've finished it lol

Developer

oh!  You can just go north again past the north metal door, that ends the game!

Submitted(+1)

oh ok now I feel stupid for not trying that lol and I was so close too...

anyway, thanks for the help! I enjoyed the game a lot

Developer

You're very welcome!  To be fair I did leave things a bit vague and unclear, you only know you have wings if you examine yourself, heck!

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed, thank you for playing!!

I love this type of game.
I'm bad at them, but I love them.
My mental image of the place shifted constantly with the new props that appeared. I felt like a little more initial context of the room and the "aestetics" to imagine would have done wonders with that.
And yet I kept playing until I found no path forward, but failing to find it was my lack of skills showing.
Good job

Developer(+1)

thank you so much!!  I'm glad you enjoyed the first game I've finished, though heck, I hope I can make another game that might be a lot more clear and easier to reach the ending with!  I might try remaking this story in renpy or something, one day!

Submitted(+1)

Agreeing with Lupanar - It's a shame there was no art in the game, it would have given everything a lot more context. It's a lot of scrolling when everything is multiple paragraphs, so it's very wordy, and I found myself struggling to comprehend it at times.

Developer(+1)

Downloading the .gblorb file will help give the proper experience!  Gargoyle is what I ended up using and worked for me and some folks I tested the game with, hopefully it'll work for you if you give that a shot!

Submitted(+1)

it's cool to see someone else made a text-based game for a jam. I thought i was alone in liking that kind of game.
Is it me, or the images in the preview panel are absent in the game? All I got was a plain black text on white background. Which is a shame, because I kinda like your artstyle, and it would have made it easier to understand where the character is. I went west after examining a bunch of stuff and I got stuck in the room with the piles of coins, unable to progress further.

Developer

Oh!!  Thank you for trying my game out!  If you try downloading the .gblorb file, it should run with images and the song I made to go along with it, and have the right text and background color

Oh no, how did you get stuck?

Submitted(+1)

Thanks, I'll definitely try the offline version :)

I got stuck when the game asked me to go east at the start of the game. I went east, and I was never able to go anywhere else after that, the game kept sending me into the 'west' room.

Developer(+1)

Oh!!  Did you pick up any coins?  If so, that might have been the cause of why you kept getting sent back, heck!

Submitted(+1)

Yep, I did. Apparently it made the eldritch horror laugh but I didn't notice any reason as to why that would softock me.

Developer

hehe, if you try taking the coins when you go north later, there's a bit more explanation!  But I'm glad you can get through it now!
