Description
As I couldn't decide on which era to imitate, I decided to do the oldest and the newest. I went for a battle theme and expressed it as both chiptune and as a modern arrangement. I absolutely took some creative liberties and I apologise for nothing! NOTHING! I used Ableton Live, REAPER, Splice INSTRUMENT, EastWest Opus, and BFD 3 to make this.

Can’t comment more praise than the other ones below have, so I’ll just say that when listening to the 2026 version, I kept eyeing my bass and darkglass plugin. Metal cover when? :D
Haha well spotted! I used the Darkglass for that! Thanks for you kind words :D
Awesome job on this! I can tell you had a lot of fun composing both versions. Feels like a pokemon battle theme but there are some VERY interesting switch-ups and breakdowns I didn't expect at all. I listened to the 1996 first and then the 2026 and it was cool hearing the difference since you can appreciate different aspects of the sound from both eras. Impressive project!
Thanks so much for that! I absolutely had fun composing both!
This makes for a good pokémon battle track, and has that classic energetic intro going into it. I don't know if it's my speakers but the bass in the '96 version sounds really low and hard to make out, I would consider bringing it up an octave. I like how the percussion changes up in both versions and adds variety to the different sections. The '26 version feels a lot more atmospheric, with the shouts and trumpets lending to the battle vibe. Really fun!
Thanks man, I appreciate that. Yeah I think if I went back to that with fresh ears now, I'd probably adjust the bass so that it translates better to all systems. There's a lot of sub there and some mid information due to the bit quantizing, but it's missing something in the bass area.
Really cool battle theme! In the 1996 version, you did a great job making a lot interesting variations and changes throughout the song, so nothing ever felt boring despite the limited sound palate. I also really enjoyed a lot of the little details in the 2026 version like the chanting in the background, small stuff like that can really elevate tracks (also that genre shift near the end is awesome). I don't really have any obvious critiques, good work!
btw, I'm also just impressed that you managed to make 2 really strong submissions in such a short period.
Thanks so much, I appreciate the kind words! Writing the 2026 version was made a little easier by already having the 1996 version as a blueprint but there was a nerve-wracking stretch of time of slow progress. Fortunately, I had a burst of inspiration towards the end of the jam haha.
That break down in the 2026 version hits so hard! I could see a metal band versionWhat drums and bass are you using in the 2026 version? The only thing for me Is that I felt the melody repeats a lot and I was looking for a little something to change with it, but that could be just because I listened to both tracks back to back. I really liked the mix for both - sounds really nice and full! I would be curious to know some of the tricks you used. Nicely done.
Thanks! I used The Black Kit in BFD 3 for most of the drums but with some different cymbals and hat swapped in. I also used Slate Trigger to beef up the kick and snare a little. I actually did create another melody but it felt like the piece lost focus, so I kept it the same throughout. It could be the result of listening to both though, as you said.
Yo, those drums are sick. It has a lot of charm, would love to hear it with an actual rock band live hahaha.
Thanks! Yeah that would be cool haha. I almost recorded some guitar for it but I felt like it would end up being too much. Kind of wish I'd tried it now haha.
ah, this is an awesome battle theme. I really have no complaints!
Thank you!
This is cool battle theme! It has a nice beat and syncopation like a pokémon battle theme should. I also enjoy how the rhythm slowed down at 1:36 like the originals usually do. Also for the 2026 version, the funk breakdown at 2:08 was insane, that genuinely caught me off guard. I think my only criticism is for both tracks the snare is a smidge too loud. The drums do some nice stuff throughout both tracks to keep things fresh though, nice work!
Thanks! The funk breakdown is the result of me not being able to control myself but I did notice that a lot of the newer Pokemon soundtracks often veer off on genre tangents, so I didn't mind too much. Also - it was fun.
Sounds very energetic... Very nice!
Thank you!
