Hi WalksThroughMollasses!,

Not sure if you checked your email, but you should have received one from itch/our jam. We have some prizes available for the jam participants, so make sure to claim a game key if you’d like one. Make sure to take a look and fill it as soon as possible!

Developer

Thanks for the reminder! I just filled out the form. No worries if it's too late, though :) apologies for not getting to it sooner.

Jam HostSubmitted

Cool! Just send you a game key to your discord DMs.

Excellent submission!

The puzzles and sound design were satisfying until the end. I loved how tactile everything felt, from spinning the dials of all the radios to tune into their clues, to deciphering and executing them with the other buttons. It was easy to learn—and the right kind of lateral thinking for me.

My only complaint about the final puzzle is how one of them is not like the others. I loved how two of the three crossed over with their solutions, and wished the leftmost one had tied into that theme a little more.

My only other suggestions? Allow us to skip the beginning, perhaps by pressing Start or Select. I’d love for a little haptics for the interactions—if only diegetically when we knock on the door or adjust the radio’s switches. And I could really see this expanding into a fuller piece, so I’d suggest at least a minimalist UI to make it a bit more inviting.

Please note that you will have more success with receiving ratings in this jam if you consider providing a web build and alternative controls for the keyboard. Not all of our players are willing to download an executable, and not all of them have controllers.

More of this please!

Thank you for taking the time to write up this thoughtful and considered feedback - greatly appreciated!

And yes, haptics would be great! I was very time poor in the period for this game jam, so lots of stuff I would have liked to include but couldn't.

I learnt a lot from working on this idea, so hope to expand it into something fuller, and implement all the excellent suggestions you and others have shared.

Congrats on the submission! Like Patricia, I sorta struggled with knowing exactly what to do to start, and I think some audio cues when interacting with things would definitely help. It definitely reminded me of some min-escape rooms I've done though, so definitely nailed down the puzzle bit, and I really enjoyed the sound effects and soundscape overall.

Congrats again on the submission, and thanks for sharing it for the jam!

There is so much creativity packed into this entry!

We did hit a few bugs in the game that made some puzzles impossible to solve until we restarted.

Developer

Thank you! I'm curious to know what bugs you ran into.

We will screen record our next session to help out debug. The game wasn't recognizing puzzle progress when doing the right things. After restarting, doing the same things as before now worked. A video will hopefully help.

Hi, i realy think this is a very interesting game, i like the concept. I made it to the second puzzle and couldn't figure it out, i heard the pattern for the animals with cricket, frog, snake, hawk and man who knocks 3 times. I tried the combination of a b x y buttons, couldn't figure out what to do. otherwise really nice game.

Developer

Thank you for checking it out!

Hi this is a very smart game. thanks for making this

I can't saulv the last puzzle from the third level, {the photos puzzle}

I've tried so hard to saulv it.

knocked

I used the 4 buttons X A B Y

I even tried using the LT and RT

but, although I've tried I couldn't saulv it.

could you help me please?

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! Let me know if you can't make out what they're saying and that's where you're stuck. But here's a hint:

There is a missing word from what the female voice is saying - what word could that be?

The male voice says numbers in response to each photo. If you know what the missing word is, you can work out from these numbers the order of buttons to press.

The other clue you need comes from the male voice saying, "Normally I would say six, but this one only has FIVE."

This is also a clue about the sequence of button presses.

all I could make out is that she is sayinghow many {L...S} each has may be it's letters?
I've tried to count the letters of the words given in the first puzzle to see if it works, but I don't think this is the right solution.
maybe she is saying lives?
but what does that even mean? and what would this help me with?

I think I am stuck.
help me please I am really curious to know the solution.

Spoyler

I think I've figured it out.
the word is legs.

so the sequence is as follows.
Hawk 2 legs
Cricket normally 6 legs
Frog 4 legs
but when I did this nothing happened is it a bug?
or my solution is wrong?

(+1)

Finally!
I did it the solution is this
spoyler

press the Hawk bottun 2 times the Crickit bottun 5 times because the one in the Photo isn't normal, it has 5 legs instead of 6
lastly press the Frog bottun 4 times.
Thank you so much fore creating this game
Looking forward to play more puzzle games from you
My regards..

Hey there! I started trying this game today, but couldn’t figure out how to progress. I don’t want to see the hint, but it’s sure one of those games that don’t spoonfeed you. I’m experimenting with all keys, but it’s quite confusing and cryptic. Truly a puzzle game but I’m not sure how to figure things out. Do you typically make audiogames? I know point and click games can have some traditional ways of working that maybe non-adventure game players may find weird when they try them for the first time. I wonder if this is the same thing, a skill issue, a culture issue. Do you think I’m going to figure it out? Have you playtested with anyone?

I played it right at the end of this stream, VOD here for a few days: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2713037686

Developer

Hey! Thanks so much for checking it out. Definitely not a skill issue, more likely a design issue. It's my first time making an audio game.

Can I ask how you were using the controller when trying to tune the radio? My hunch is that you were pulling and holding the analog stick at different positions, when the game requires you to rotate the stick clockwise or anti-clockwise to tune. Definitely a problematic assumption on my part - that any player would intuit that was how to interact with the radio, without any feedback to communicate that. Probably needs more clear audio cues, or a change in UI so the player doesn't get stuck on that!

Appreciate you providing the link to the stream - very helpful!

Jam HostSubmitted

Oh! I see. Yeah, I don’t think I would figure that out! I think the concept is really cool about experimenting things with the controls. It was interesting to discover how to interact with the radio, like turn it on and then try to tune it. But there’s a lot that’s cryptic, and it’s a lot of experimentation; perhaps too much experimentation, though maybe there’s no such thing as that; it is something to explore and maybe next time also playtest early, so you know what are people perceiving about the mechanics. Because this is very much abstract so far. I’ll try to continue playing now that I have this tip. Perhaps if the goal is to run things clockwise or counter clockwise, you could have the sound of the radio move throughout the screen in a circle, where everything is white noise except the top right corner, and then we have to chase this ‘sound’ with the joystick, until it is tuned?

Or maybe not!; I don’t know. Just brainstorming. A lot of solutions would probably work but it’s important to test because with such an abstract environment and such experimental gameplay, it’s probably important to understand what players are thinking and how they’re thinking about solving the puzzles. So you can adapt to this.

I will continue playing and try this solution and I hope the next puzzles will be more intuitive to figure out!

I just played it again and thanks a lot for that tip. I was able to exit the first room. In the second room, I wasn’t able to figure out the solution to the puzzle. I heard the full puzzle about who’s afraid of whom, and it was exciting to have a riddle, but I just couldn’t figure out what I had to do.

Edit: Also, the way I used the controller joystick was in many different ways. I moved it in counter-clockwise and clockwise way and well as in other directions. I thought, like a radio tuning, I was looking for the frequency that would give the right tip. I was looking for the working frequency, so I moved the joystick slowly to try to find that frequency. Even with your tip, I tried rotating the joystick like you said, but the first times I did it in a sort of slow way, not super fast, so I still didn’t understand I had to move it fast at first. But then I did try that and it worked.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for giving it another go! Definitely a design problem that it's not clear enough what affect certain interactions are having that I would need to work on.

I will share that from the second room on there are multiple stations to tune to which provide parts of the whole clue needed to solve the puzzle. Originally I had these set at different positions, so you would rotate around and hear multiple broadcasts and have to piece them together, but some early feedback from a friend suggested that was confusing, and they suggested separate "bands" which you toggle between with the dpad. The trouble there is that it's easy to completely miss this mechanic, as was the case for you. Different kinds of static on each band, or a voice over to label the bands would probably solve that issue.

Anyways, I really appreciate you taking the time to experiment with it and provide detailed feedback.
