Not a bad game at all but a bit confusing
Thanks for playing.
The game is meant to emulate 80's CRPGs where handholding was minimal.
That said, I do understand that this type of game design hasn't aged the best so I appreciate the feedback all the same :)
This is a super polished game!
I definitely get the retro vibes on this one, for sure!
I recommend choosing a different color for the main character as the purple is a bit hard to see on the dark background. That being said, I do like the overall color palette!
One thing that would be nice to see would be the enemy's health bar during battles. (I don't know if that's historically accurate for the genre though?)
Regardless, this is a really well-put-together game. Great job!
Thanks for playing and the feedback too.
I will perhaps make an update to change the protagonist's color in the future, but I am pretty lax with updating my games so it probably won't happen.
You're correct, it was quite rare back in the day to display enemy health but if you do end up playing the game anymore it's easy to track since every enemy including the final boss all have 100HP as a rule.
Anyway I am glad you enjoyed the game :)
I really love the overall style of the game, and the theme music fits it perfectly <3 I’m not very familiar with this kind of genre, and I felt a bit confused at times since there isn’t much guidance on what to do next. I had trouble figuring out where the king is and how to meet him. Aside from that, it’s a solid game!
Hello and thanks for the feedback.
I understand totally about the lack of clarity at the start but that is vindicative of the games I am trying to emulate, the 80s CRPGs.
I thought a mid ground of having a little intro of having you seek out information to get started would be better, if I was trying to emulate them totally then the player would just get dumped on the overworld with no intro or direction at all.
But long story short, the way that is is an intentional game design choice and not your fault at all.
Thanks for taking the time to play, I appreciate it :)
The game is very well done. Everything seems polished, the retro look is perfect, and the music and sounds are really good. I really like the old rpgs like this, but I'm not very good at them. I got to the end of the first shrine but was easily defeated by the boss. Awesome game!
Thank you for playing , for the kind praise and valuable feedback :)
I was psyched to see your game since I made a early RPG-inspired game too! I love the Ultima-esque aesthetic. You got an amazing amount of gameplay in for the jam! I got the artifact and was looking for the shrine but got defeated in the overworld. I'm definitely planning on coming back to try to get further.
Thanks so much for playing and the feedback, I am glad you like it :)
