I got so frustrated by this that I coded a free matchmaking platform just for us indie devs. It's called GameJam Crew. I've actually linked this specific Itch.io Jam directly into the platform!
How it makes your life easier:
- 1-Click Login: Log in with Discord, set your role (Coder, 2D Art, Audio...), and your favorite engine.
- Two-way matchmaking: You can browse open teams and apply, OR you can just post your availability and let Team Leaders send you direct invites!
- No missed opportunities: It has a built-in Inbox and Push/Email notifications so you never miss an invite.
- Private Squad Space: Once accepted, you get a private chat to organize before sharing your actual Discord server links (no more public spam!).
