Puzzles are usually fun, but this one didn't land too well with me. The sliding interface made it hard to keep solved blocks together, and a lot of the pictures have a lot of blank sky that's tedious to solve. I appreciate the amount of content, though, that's a lot for a game jam entry.
Thanks for the constructive criticism; it was an experiment as all game jam entries should be ;-)
For my next game I'm going to keep this mechanism but also offer a non sliding option which should give the best of both worlds. Or maybe just allow people to skip the sliding, I don't know. Having now put in traditional straightforward swapping in that game I am finding myself gravitating to that most of the time. So I think even as the mother (or rather, father) of this game I see the potential flaw in this design too.
I think what I would try, is to make it so pieces which are correctly locked together, slide together. That would mean moving pieces across multiple rows/columns, but I think it would be worth the complication. Or maybe something where you can manually lock a piece in place, and things slide through it?
Im not really into Jigzaw puzzle games, but it was ok. I think the new puzzle mechanic is fun but is also a little anoying the it moves all the pieces
Yeah, tradeoffs. At first I was really into the new mechanic but now I'm leaning towards a combo that includes the standard swap mechanic. I'm keeping this one as is, maybe it will develop a following, but I'm planning a new one with a new theme (https://alanrobinsondev.itch.io/digital-artifacts-a-tileswap-puzzle-game/devlog)
Thanks for the feedback.
this was a fun entry! very casual puzzle game of very nice photos! i like that there's a difficulty setting for the variety of puzzlers out there, great job!
Thank you!
I'm pleasantly surprised by this - it's a lot more satisfying than I was expecting. It's not quite a replacement for sliding-block puzzles because you can quite easily shift full sections around and that makes it quite easy, but for the purposes of making a PC jigsaw? You build sections, and then put them into position, and it's quite friction-less.
It's the sort of thing I'd happily play on a 5-10 min bus journey on my phone, you should consider a mobile port!
Thanks! it runs decently on mobile currently, though an app on the store is nicer for low-signal areas / bus rides to be sure!
