I'm assuming the game is set up for you to eventually fail, not being able to keep up with the rising quota? If that's the case, then I got a little let down. Let me explain.
I felt like I was being spoon-fed the lore, and the mystery each day. Not bad in of itself. I wanted more, but the amount I got each day in relation to the time I had to spend fishing did not feel rewarding. The fishing mechanic is actually really cool, but it gets tiring with how long you need to do it to get another bit of lore. My advice would be to make the days shorter overall.
So... I spend a long time fishing each day dawn till dusk to be able to reach the quota, and to have leftover money for tomorrow's quota, knowing it will be higher. The payoff better be worth it, because I really want to know what happens next in the story! The answer?
On day 9, the characters start repeating lines from day 1. I proceeded to day 10, and the same thing happened (btw Dr. Sturgeon talks as if he were the car lol). And that was super disappointing. At this point I give up.
It seems like the player failing is the expected outcome, why not just slap a ridiculous quota on day 8, give some ridiculous lore reason for it, and let the player die, since there is no point in playing further. Either this, or if the player reaches the expected quota, just end the story in literally any way. All setup, and no payoff, and having spent 2 hours (thereabouts) fishing, sadly I feel like the game wasted my time.
The game is really good, the artstyle is beautiful, and I'm honestly in awe you did it all by yourself (love all the memes references). But man, do I feel disappointed with the experience. I hope you develop it a bit more after the jam, so it has a proper ending, because you have a banger on your hands, it just needs a little more time in the oven.
I appreicate you saying that and it is definitely something I understand and completely agree with. I regret not making day 8 just an impossible quota and then that could be 'the ending'. But I left it the way it was so the player could keep going and say 'I made it to day 13 for example'. Like a highscore. I regret that decision because most people don't care about that in a game like this and that is fair.
TRUST ME, I wanted an 'GOOD' ending in this game so bad. I just had no time to implement one. I wanted more dialgoue past day 8 and maybe a day 10 GOOD ending, but I just didn't have the time. I am really sorry your efforts didn't feel rewarded and I am so surprised you made it all the way to day 10. Furthest anyone I know of has made it.
I definitely want to come back after the jam and polish it off. Some people want me to add a few new areas to the game and some side quests and different fishing areas. They want it as a full complete game. I have been honestly thinking about doing that.
Either way, I understand that frustration. I was frustrated with that too. I should have had the player just die at day 8 with a more conclusive bad ending. But at the time, I just felt I would let them go for 'highscores' or whatever. But the game is not too great to replay besides for the minigame. Thank you for your feedback. There definitely will be a big polishing update after the jams voting is done.
Really great game
Thank you so much!
Ok the art looks super cool and when it comes to gameplay it actually made me lose track of time the fishing mechanic was really enjoyable.
I am happy you liked the minigame so much! I was worried that many would find it too hard and unfair. REALLY happy you liked it so much. Thank you for your feedback!
The art is excellent and the fishing technique is enjoyable. You excelled in the dialogue; it lacks a bit of horror, but it's still good.
Thank you so much. Yeah, I felt it lacked horror too to be honest. I went for a conceptual horror style where just the very idea of something was scary enough to be horror. I was inspired by Tusk (a movie I absolutely hate for how uncomfortable it makes me), and the book / game, I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream. I don't think I hid the 'secret' of what was going on well enough. The ending was meant to be a REVEAL OF THE TRUTH... but I think most players guessed what was going on right away. I also don't think I executed the whole 'body horror' concept near well enough.
But anyway, I REALLY appreciate you playing my game and your feedback too! THANK YOU.
I really liked it! Especially the fishing minigame! It's really well done...
Thank you! That is such a relief because my consensus so far is that people find it a bit too hard, which is definitely completely fair.. it is hard. I am SO excited to play your game too. It looks incredible based off the screenshots. Going to get around to playing them tonight. Thank you for playing mine :)
awww it's so nice of you! i hope you'd like it! I just fixed a few things there, so hopefully people would enjoy it more
Didn't have enough time to beat it, made it to day 6. Awesome game, I didn't expect the good doctor meme to make an appearance
God thank you so much to for playing that much of my game. And far enough to make it to doctor meme! So happy someone saw it atleast. Super proud of that one.
Massive thank you .
Game looks beautiful, and these NPC's are hilarious. Great writing and world building. Fishing minigame is unique and pretty tricky. I need to come back and actually meet my quota lol
I appreciate this so much. Yeah, a few people have mentioned the mini game is a bit too tricky potentially. I can go back and tweak that in the future for sure. I just felt it was my only fun gameplay part so I scaled the difficulty a bit too much maybe?
Anyway, thank you so much for the feedback!
Played it, didn't end up beating it because it's super late. I'll play it again later when I'm rating it. Very good visuals, very funny writing and some pretty horrific situations presented. Not a huge fan of how difficult the fishing minigame is and how particular it is, I ended up dying on my first night because of the fact I couldn't get the timing good on the skill check. Great work though! Can't wait to give it another shot.
I really appreciate your feedback! Thank you so much for playing my game. It means a lot. Yeah, I actually made the minigame quite hard because I felt the game lacked gameplay and I thought I could scale difficulty since I thought the minigame was quite fun to play. It definitely is something I could change in the future.
But thank you again for trying it out. I hope you get around to trying it again and I can't wait to hear your thoughts if you have more :)
