Great use of the border ingredient. The player controller and game balance are a bit clunky. Other than that, the pixelart is really nice and I really like the retro feel of the whole thing.
What a pleasant surprise to me. One person team, and a complete pixel-art experience. Yes, the palette is basic, but graphics is consistent, well readable and actually good looking. The mechanics are well using the ingredients - I like the borderline switcheroo of ranged/melee attacks. The game should definitely get more diverse levels and enemies. Also, the shooting controls are strange and unusual to me. But again, this is a great game from one-person team.
As I said in a different comment, the weird aiming is a result of me testing this game primarily on a gamepad :P . The levels were put together in a very short period of time, so yeah, they kinda lack diversity. But I'm glad you like the game :3 .
Maličký a fungující.
Za mě jedna z vzácných malých-ale-úplných her.
Jsem ráda, že se hra líbila :3 .
Using pixel art with the retro sounds fits the vibe so well. The core gameplay mechanic was really cool with switching, but I feel like the melee mode was too overpowered as you could get heals and the bullets are easy to dodge, while in the other mode, the mushrooms have a really big hitbox and hit really fast. Overall it was a fun experience and I cheesed my way through by mostly running through and dodging the bullets :D
Thank you for your feedback!
I don't wanna repeat what I already said in other replies, but I'm aware of the problem with the melee shroom damage area and with the the fact that you can just run through quite a lot of parts of the game due to the fact that the shrooms are kinda dumb.
Really cute visuals, and I love those arcade sound effects. On the other hand, combination of big hitboxes, mushrooms' pathfinding and level design allowed me to cheese the game by shooting the mushrooms while they we're stuck. Also the border mechanics was a bit unused, since it could be just not crossed (almost everytime). One upgrade could be to make horizontal borders instead of vertical one. Or even create whole regions where the player is being shot at by the 'shrooms.
Thanks for the feedback!
I didn't want to put the border horizontally to leave the player with a choice in some parts of the game, whether they would like to try to get heals or whether they want to just get rid of the shrooms from a distance. I didn't want to force in a specific way to play the game. And as for the shrooms being dumb and getting stuck on corners, I'm aware of this problem, same with the huge damage area of the melee shrooms.
Sweet little game!
The biggest strengths I see here are:
Creative mechanic (actually ended up being pretty well balanced and thought out),
Pixel art (kudos for creating all of your assets by yourself)
Overall cohesion (for what it is, it actually feels like a unit of a game - with problems, but it works well)
The biggest weaknesses I found were:
Missing music (It would add so much atmosphere)
Huge hitboxes (It was a bit frustrating to get hit by enemies who were visually a distance from me)
Good job anyways and hope to see more games from you!
Thanks for your feedback on this game!
I'm glad you liked the pixel art and how the game feels :3 . I think I talked about the music in a different comment, but I wanted to add it on the last day, but instead I spent few hours fixing bugs (and drawing the end-game train which I'm still not very happy with).
The hitbox of the player is actually similar size as the player sprite, the problem is with the melee mushrooms that have a big damage area that I set early in the development and haven't touched it since :P . I might shrink their damage radius down after the ratings end.
Tak možná ten otřesnej path finding má i nějaký výhody :D .
Ale jsem ráda, že tě hra bavila :3 !
This gives "old arcade game" vibes and I'm so here for it. The boundary? Brilliant mechanic. Granted I'm just a filthy casual, the levels seemed challenging enough to me. (Sometimes I got brutalised by a swarm of shroom projectiles, as I should have.) Also the fact you created this all on your own is kind of mind blowing. Great job!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :3 !
Enjoyable fun little game. The gameplay can be trivialized by using the gun and either kiting for days or making the shrooms stuck.
Seems that the path-finding and the "intelligence" of the enemies is the biggest complaint about this game :') . But at least I know what to improve next time :D .
The best use of the ingredient "border" in the jam. The concept of the long/short range is awesome.
But stopping for shooting is very annoying, so much so that I opted to just run without shooting. Which is paradoxically easier when the fungi are in the long range mode.
But the game can be finished without any homicide. Or maybe fungicide :-).
Very nice looking game, with an interesting idea to play around with the border switching - can definitely imagine this being fun if expanded :)
What i found out is that you actually do not need to kill anyone. If you just go to the right side for the melee form, you can quite easily dodge the bullets, since they dont follow you much, and you can just skip most of the combat :) not sure what the solution for that would be, but just a note that it can be played like that
I really liked the art, it has an overall warm feel to it, the colors were chosen nicely and the aesthetic of all the wood is very pleasant. It could use some music or ambient background though, it helps out with the atmosphere significantly.
But overal, it was fun to play and it is a very solid entry for a game jam, thank you for the game :)
I'm glad you liked it!
I'm aware of the problem that you can skip a lot of combat, I originally wanted to make it so that you have to kill all enemies to get to the next level, but that would probably make the game really annoying because the enemies aren't very smart and they often get stuck at obstacles and they stop following you after a certain distance, so it could turn the game into a hide and seek (which is not what I wanted it to be).
I totally understand the point about music, I wanted to add there at least some ambient tune, but the game got into a playable state 2 hours before the deadline (there were some problems with the border when restarting a level) and it had like three sound effects and two very bad levels so I tried to improve the game in these aspects instead.
Very nice game with simple but great looking visual and sounds. I very like the usage of the"border" ingredient. There are just 2 problems I had with the game:
1) The close-range mushrooms could benefit from a better pathfinding. Right now, they often get stuck on an edge an obstacle and are unable to move on.
2) I see the benefit of being able to shoot in the opposite direction than you are moving in (using the IJKL keys), but this benefit this is kinda killed by the fact that the character stops to shoot. You could get rid of the IJKL keys altogether and just make the character shoot in the way it is facing. It would not make any change to the gameplay, and make the controls simpler.
Overall, a very nice little game with good coherent visual and audio fitting the jams theme nicely. I can totally imagine that playing this game on a "gameboy like" device would be a total blast!
Thanks for the feedback!
The path-finding problem actually exists for both close-range and long range mushrooms, they both use the same algorithm, but the long-range ones stop heading towards you when they get close enough :P . But yeah, they the path-finding is very simple and there's a lot of room for improvements.
And for the IJKL keys - I had a gamepad with me and tested the game primarily on it. I wanted to ask someone to playtest it on keyboard, but in the end I didn't ask anyone because there were a lot of bugs with the border when restarting a level and I was running out of time.
But I'm glad you liked the visuals and the overall style :3 .
