Nicely done!

Developer

Thank you

Nice fun version of pong, works well, cool how you made it with QuickBASIC! I think I maybe encountered a bug? It looks like it should have hit the paddle, but didn't? It might just be a couple of pixels off hitting the paddle though?

Developer (1 edit)

yeah I noticed that too and assumed it was a quirk in the mouse updating after collision detection was done.  But looking at your video maybe not.  Will look into it more for a possible post jam fix

Everything is fine.. the mouse sensitivity is actually fine.. I did not feel anything at all. I was confused though, are we playing against ourselves or the computer? It was Game Over for each side. It was still well done.

I decided to make it a solo game in which the point is to get a high score instead of traditional pong. I talked about the reasons behind doing that instead of making it a 2p game with keyboard controls in my devlog.

I understand.. I may have read the comment wrong.. but it was still good.

Nice, the game runs smoothly and the gameplay is fun. I think the paddles size is fine, the ball's reaction to the paddles is very well made too. I agree with the mouse sensitivity being too high but you already adressed that.

Great job achieving this with those huge limitations!

Ok it's insane that you have  DOS PC and made a DOS game that runs on modern windows. That has got to be insane to make anything with those limitations. But also probably pretty fun. I turned my mouse sensitivity waaaay down and it was much more manageable.

Developer

Thank you! I had a lot of fun with it. Testing things out, side by side, my windows mouse seems about twice as fast as my DOS mouse, so that checks out. Might just be the case of modern windows moving the mouse faster, or something not taking into account that it's running a 320 x 200 game in regard to mouse coordinates inside the emulator.

Post-jam I'll probably look into making some in-game mouse settings but I agree, changing mouse sensitivity in Windows settings was very helpful.

Really cool idea! I really like that the bounce reacts to where the ball hits the paddle and not just a simple bounce. Only thing I wish I could change would be the mouse sensitivity, it felt a bit too fast for me, or making the paddle bigger... other wise really good job

Absolutely- Regarding the paddle size I also thought that they were a bit small, however I was mimicking the size of the original Atari pong, which was also small.

Regarding the mouse sensitivity, that's very fair and something my partner suggested when playing my game. One pixel of mouse movement = one pixel of paddle movement currently, but past a jam submission that is definitely something I could think about customizing. However, that would also require storing fractional pixels (i.e. moving 0.5 pixels to 1) and some of that math is a costly operation, so on my real DOS PC trying to do fractional x and y speeds for the ball was causing too much lag in the game, and it ran jittery. I didn't have enough time to look into mouse speed customization during the jam, but it's something I would look into if I refined the game further.

Yeah, that was just a observation on my point of view, it's perfect as it is for the gamejam in the way you did
