Thanks a lot! That's pretty much exactly what we were going for

Thanks for playing!

Always wanting more Punch-Out type games, and this one was hella fun and charming!! Excellent stuff

Developer

Yeah! There really aren't that many punchout type games around are there?

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing!

Submitted(+2)

One of my favorite games in this Jam, very fun. :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! I haven't got around to playing yours yet but I'll make sure to do so asap, probably tonight!

Submitted(+2)

Love the retro visuals! I definitely could see Super Fren Punch in an arcade!

Developer

Thank you!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! Without the visuals it wouldn't be half as good lol

Thanks for playing!

I need someone to give me an indepth tutorial on how this game works because as it stands I have absolutely no idea how to tell neither when joel is going to attack nor what the timing is to dodge, I cannot see any difference in his sprite if there is any when he's about to attack, it's just like i'm getting punched and it's complete luck on whether i'm try to dodge at that time or not. Maybe it's because i've never played any of the punch out games but it's basically unplayable for myself specifically

It looks and sounds amazing though and judging by everyone else's comments the game itself holds up to that, I just have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing

Submitted(+2)

In a stroke of complete luck I got past Joel and Bald Joel (I have no idea how) and had a lot more fun with the Bulk fight because it was a lot easier to tell what he was going to do - and after dying a few times managed to cheese it by just alternating right uppercuts and left normal hits one at a time and for whatever reason he just didn't attack once or even try to even after several consecutive blocks from him

I will not be attempting expert mode.

Developer(+1)

Congrats! Bulk Bogan has some oddities in his programmed patterns, I've had a couple runs where he barely fights back as well and then others where he follows up a double power punch with two more double power pucnhes followed by relentless 4 punch combos. Usually it's somewhere in between, though.

I think if we had mroo\e time we could have had extra frames that telegraph attacks more clearly, as of now a lot of the animations are sprite shaking and position shifting. So when Joel attacks up he first moves back a bit, if hes attacking the body he moves back less but more to the side before pucnhing. It's a subtle difference and maybe hard to spot until you get a feel for it.

Thanks for playing!

Developer

I can give a few more tips in case you want to give it another shot sometime.

I've already mentioned high and low pucnhes get telegraphed differently. However, if you block them you will take chip damage (1dmg) but that's not usually a big deal. It's mroe effective to dodge but you hae to be carefull dodging body shots because if you dodge into the direction the body shot is coming from, or you duck into a body shot you'll get hit anyway. Luckily no input blocks body by default so playing it safe could be dodging high punches and jsut blocking low ones.

Also inc ase you weren't using the special mirrors to block the bald shine that lets you get in a steady stream of free hits. Head punches do more damage and for Bulk Bogan body shots basically do chip damage to him, again only 1dmg. But for him, any pucnhes you get in will be worth it so if he's blocking high too much then get a few body shots in.

I've never played this type of game before so it took me quite a few tries to beat Bogan in normal mode, but once I did, it felt super satisfying! The presentation here is unreal for a game jam. Two thumbs up!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks a lot! I really pushed myself maybe a bit too much but the real heavy lifting presentation-wise is the art which is all credited to my partner in this gamejam (with the exception of a couple small things like some effects or menu art which I did)

Glad you enjoyed it! If you liked this, check out Super Punchout, it's naturally a lot more balanced and polished than this.

The original Punchout and Punchout Wii are great too.

Thanks for playing!

Developer

Thank you~
I am glad that people like the style do much.

Submitted(+2)

Wow I didn't expect this to be how I learned how to play punch out, kicked my ass, but I was able to win thanks to a magic spell!

Very well done :)  very fun, loved the cutscenes, loved the sprites, what a dickhead joel is tho

Developer(+2)

Hahaha yeah Joel is a dick in this but of course it's all for the game's sake, the real protaganist is Fren :^)

Thanks for playing!

Developer

Using my mouse turned out to me better than a tablet :D
Glad you liked it!

I never plaeyd a fighter game before, but i had so much fun with this, love the art style, voice over, animations and music so much!! I think this is easily top 3 for me in this gamejam

Developer(+2)

Glad to hear it! I can take credit for the voice overs (headset mic + bitcrush & downsample and you get a nice rough retro voice clip haha), but for the art style and animations that's all my partner. The music is all opengameart!
Thanks for playing!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the nice comment!
I will be trying out other games today and look forward to enjoy them as you guys are.

Submitted(+2)

Awesome game, spamming right uppercuts seems to mildly break it on the standard, probably doesn't on expert, but you can just right upper cut joel to death imedeatelly lmao.

Developer

Okay I'm gonna try this, I wonder if theres an additional few frames because of the Scale.X inverting when you hit him with a right punch (so i didnt have to set up a separate animation for his hit anim), because he also swaps back when transitioning back to idle anim.
I'm gonna try that out., Other than that there's functionally no difference between left and right punches 😆

Developer

lol you're right, at least Bulk Bogan's not as susceptible to it because of the invulnverability frames in some of his windups

Don't tell Joel! :D

You know Joel & Bald Joel actually have some uninterruptible high punches but it depends on which pattern their controller chooses

Submitted(+2)

Oh lmao? I didn't know, but luck is luck, also yeah Bulk did take me a few tries, but I did find it funny how joel just folded xD

Developer

Hahah yeah hope he doesn't take it the wrong way, but overall for a two week jam, first time making a Super Pucnhout clone, very first time ever working with animation keyframe-based logic and not using colliders or trigger areas (I come from unity in the past), I think I'm really happy with the result after 12ish days or so

In fact there's not a single collider or collision detection of any kind in the whole game, everything is based on AnimationController and State machines

Submitted (1 edit) (+2)

Doubt he will, it's a sort of a tutorial, so it shouldn't be hard in the first place, after all we're not talking about The Rock. Also came from Unity. I had issues with animations in Godot ever since I started using it, so nice that you could pull it off!

Submitted(+2)

Fun game, cool way to work in the theme. I liked the beanie bit to introduce the blinding mechanic. The fights and fighter animations felt pretty authentic to me, although I've only ever played the original Punch-Out. The mirror block gave me a bit of trouble at first, because the telegraph animations are long, and I was consistently using it too early. Good job!

Strategy spoilers, I guess. If other people are having trouble after playing the game, here's my Prima strategy guide:

I stumbled into a fairly consistent strategy that makes the game a lot easier, even in expert mode: spam right uppercuts until you're blocked, then spam left jabs, then go back to right uppercuts to repeat the cycle when the jabs are blocked. If you get blocked multiple times in a row, regardless of punch, be ready to dodge. You're probably going to get a telegraphed attack, after which you can go back to spamming. This doesn't fully stunlock the opponents, you're still going to need to dodge and block big attacks, but it does seem to prevent the random quick punches they can throw. I've beaten Expert mode 4 times doing this, with my best "time" being 9 seconds left on the final fight.

Expert Mode Screenshot

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot!

That strategy is interesting, I wonder if you've found a nearly frame perfect rhythm to get a hit in in between state transitions 🤔 After a few landed hits in a few the last fighter actually goes into a very temporary input reading state so switching high/low punches should matter for the next couple seconds until it wears off (blocks dont contribute to this)

There are also a few frames at the end of the last fighters double power punch where you can get a hit in and soemtimes up to 4 hits because it shouldn't count toward that 3-hit -> read input to block special pattern, but you have to dodge it early enough to get back and land one.

That's a very nice expert time by the way, I've got 14 and 12 seconds once each and other thant hat its always 1-3 seconds left, so I was quite happy with the expert feel at least for the last fight.

Thanks for playing!

I had a good time with this one ^^. The story was really cute and silly (definitely got a chuckle out of me a few times), the scripted loss was a nice surprise, and the idea of using a mirror to stun your opponent is super novel!

Kinda wish Joel put up a little more of a fight in normal mode because I only really learned how the mirror mechanic worked during the Bulk Bogan battle lol. I just spammed head punches during the refight and he didn't block any of them. Bulk Bogan also kicked my ASS (I'll chalk that up to me never playing a Punch-Out-like before, though his quick jabs felt pretty hard to react to due to the lacking animation), to the point where I was starting to get a bit bored, but finally getting him with the stun and BARELY edging out a win with a sliver of health left got me to pop off ^^'

All in all, really solid work! I'm sure Joel's gonna get a kick punch out of this one :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! Anything story related or details like the mirrors were all up to my team member (he's definitely in here silently

Yeah Joel and Bald Joel have similar but slightly different patterns but I dont think Bald Joel defense aggresively enough. Regular Joel is quite basic and has that time where he blocks 100% of body shots to set up the scripted finish. Regular Joel should try to do his shine attack twice but the first one may not trigger if you damage him too fast. And by that point,a s you said you can jsut eat the pucnhes while blidned and then finish hima fter you recover.

The last fighter is the one I felt needed to be really tight especially for expert mode. My best time is 14 seconds left on the clock and I was realllllly lucky with the state changes his fight handler happened to pick. Before that it was 12 seconds and then a bunch where i scraped by with 1 or 3 seconds left.

Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+2)

For visual feedback, I couldn't "feel" Fren's right punch. Otherwise solid!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah I was a little worried about that, that's why for head punches I have the opponent invert the x scale so his hit animation goes the other direction

Submitted(+2)

looks really sexy but I'm too bad at video games

Developer

No worries, did you beat normal mode? (the time limit in normal isn't real so feel free to play safe and dodge alot)

Submitted(+2)

I am SHIT at this game, and its genuinely starting to become ragebait, and I love it

Developer(+1)

Hahaha that's great, to be honest I can USUALLY beat expert but not without stress and only 1-3 seconds left on the clock

This is what we were hoping for:)

After the voting period opens I'm open to giving tips if you're still playing!

Submitted

gave it a rating, keep it up!

Developer

Thanks! I'll check yours out today.

Developer(+1)

Actually my most recent expert mode win had 12 seconds left on the clock. I hope that gives people confidence that it's possible ;)

I'm not sure if I can do better than that though lol, every other run has been cutting it pretty close

Developer

(I didn't know about the queue system so I've played yours but can't rate it yet, I'll leave a proper comment once I can rate it!)
