For those who's complaining about final boss having too much HP: Did you tried to shoot up?
Wasn’t expecting a game made for a retro console! I played on a PAL MegaDrive 2 (with NTSC 60hz mod and an Everdrive) and really had a blast playing it! Then I replayed it on the emulator included too. The gameplay mechanics are simple and fun, I personally enjoyed the difficulty of the levels and the bosses but I have to agree that they had a huge amount of HP… which tbh kinda added to the charm of it being a Megadrive/Genesis game. To put it in a phrase: When I finished it, I just wanted to play more. xD
Just wanted to point out that the game crashed on my console during my first playthrough at the 2nd level, after resetting the console I kept dying on a loop (solved by turning the console off and on instead of resetting), most likely it’s something related to my Everdrive or my setup so it shouldn’t be considered a problem for the gamejam, but I still decided I should mention and record it in case it’s useful for the developer in any way.
Making a working Sega Genesis rom for this is insane, I love it! The visuals and audio aspects were great and felt very Genesis-ey as well!
There were a few things I wasn't big on, though, mainly the level design felt kind of unfair at certain points (which I guess kinda adds to the Genesis feel), and the first boss had a bit too much health in my opinion. Neither of those were bad enough to ruin the game for me, though, especially because the game was very generous with its checkpoints (and oh my god thank everything you didn't include a lives system).
Overall I think its very cool and pretty fun! Also the final boss was a really fun challenge but still felt fair!
This is as incredible as it is hard: Balls.. wait no-
Seriously though it's pretty incredible, it's fun and hard but at least not that hard that I couldn't beat it, the art was super neat too! Also Dilto!!!!!
Cool game! Really creative use of an emulator! Also really liked the art!
Really cool that this is an actual Genesis rom, and it is funny that the instructions for how to run it are many times bigger than the game itself. I ran this on my Ambernic device which made it waaaay more enjoyable. The difficulty was super evil but at least we got save states. The final boss was by far the high point of the game and I can't help but feel like the game would have been much better if you lead with that instead of being an 'I wanna be the guy' platformer. I agree with the other person though, 9999 hp is kinda ridiculous. Aside from that, great work on the game.
Really liked how difficult this game is. Reminded me I wanna be the boshy wibe. Thanks for that.
Counter intuitive movement system, though ;)
Very cool that this is an actual genesis ROM that you can load with an everdrive, it's a fun little experience, though the final boss does feel like it drags a little with the sheer amount of health it has
I tried to make a JoelCore difficulty moment as often as possible
Those bosses were so evil, man. I think I'll be seeing that rainbow pattern in my sleep. (complimentary)
As cool as it is that this is an actual Genesis game, it does break rule 3 by not having a proper Windows version.
As ideal as a native Windows port would be, that might be a bit too much to ask. If you can find one with a flexible enough license, please try to bundle an emulator with the download, ideally with a way to click a shortcut/script/executable to automatically start the game in the emulator. We need the process of starting a game to be roughly the same for everything, otherwise Joey gets confused :(
Not disqualified for now.
there is an instruction in the archive with a link to an emulator Retro Arch from Steam.
plus joel have already played games using retro arch.
Doesn't matter.
Your game's download must include everything (especially software) required to play it on Windows 10/11 without breaking any licenses/laws. You can't just ignore jam rules because "Joel has done x before", especially considering the judges aren't Joel, other streamers who may want to try some games from the jam aren't Joel, and other jam participants rating your game aren't Joel. You can't expect everyone to go download and set up an entirely separate piece of software just to play 1 game out of god-knows how many.
As I said, if you're able to bundle an emulator with the download without breaking it's license, with an easy way to start the game as-if it's any other game on Windows, then there's no issue. You could even try adding things like a custom config file with controls and other settings specifically suited for your game.
Added game + emulator bundle as a download option
