Running "Game.desktop" on Arch Linux has fatal error

Just got the full version today to run on Arch Linux (CachyOS), and when attempting to launch either "Game.desktop" or "nw" as executable, nothing happens. I then tried launching it from the terminal (with and without root privileges) and got the following error:

"/Cycle_Of_Corruption_Linux_1.0.0
❯ sudo sh -c "$(dirname %k)/nw"

I've tried granting exec permission again in the terminal using "chmod +x" to "Game.desktop" and "nw" with no luck. Attempting to launch in terminal with commands "./Game.desktop" and "./nw" produces the same result. I'm not sure where to go from here as this is the first time I've encountered this problem where adding exec permission didn't work. I might not be adding permission to what it wants, but I see no other executable or libraries mentioned. I did temporarily grant full permissions for "libc.so" since it mentioned it (even though it was very unlikely to be the problem) but no dice there.

Any advice on how to fix this? I tried to download the Windows version and run it with Wine but it freezes up on the nearly full black "Loading..." screen at start.

Developer(+1)

That is definitely weird. Can you try Proton on Steam with the Windows version? That should work.

I know the native Linux version needs some tinkering around for some versions of Linux, but I'm really not well-versed with that.

Yep that seems to work! Running it as a Non-Steam game (bought it here on Itch) with Proton 9.0.4 gets me past the initial loading screen. I was able to save and saw no problems with the game at that point. Not sure why Wine didn't like it or why the Linux build wasn't being granted permission, but at least it's playable this way for me.

Thanks for fast response!

Developer

No problem, and I'm sorry for the trouble! At least thankfully, Linux is pretty good at pretty much running anything!

I ran the demo fine on my endeavor OS which is arch based. I had no trouble with it. I'll try running the full version here on my computer when I get home. I'm at the beginning of a 12-hour shift. I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

Developer

Thanks!

Here you go. There's some other useless errors, too, but it became obvious that "permission denied" meant something else need chmodded, the only thing that could be actually executable was the crashpad handler. It also dawned on me that it wasn't getting the usual crash handler. So that was it.

So, giving permissions for the crashpad handler solved the issue? Did I get that right?

(1 edit)

It seems that does work! So it needed both the game's executable and the crash handler to be marked as executable. These two commands did the trick (within the Cycle of Corruptions directory in terminal):

chmod +x nw
chmod +x chrome_crashpad_handler

Thanks kohlrak for figuring it out! I guess the game wouldn't proceed until it could have the crash handler process running in the background or something. Oh and if anyone does this and it launches the game without audio, just relaunch the game. The first time after getting it to run it was mute but afterwards it seemed to work just fine.

Developer

Great to hear! Thanks for the confimration!

I'm going to assume you're not familiar with linux. In linux, that which gets executed directly, whether (so not including SO/DLL files) requires execution permission. Similarly, a "full path" or "relative path" is needed to execute programs (that way no one places a "dir" executable as a virus into a folder to get the user to execute it when they're trying to find out what's in the folder). This is why execution in linux requires "./" in front of the executable "./" is a shortcut for "current directory".

What happened here is that the crash handler gets called as a child process so that it can run separately in case the program crashes it can handle the crash without crashing too, however without execute permissions it's not allowed to run and the "nw" executable did not include a handler for this and thus crashed without the crash handler handling (the creators of RPG maker never considered that the engine could crash *because* of the crash handler not having permission to run).
