I cannot work out how to play, sorry
A nice game to relax to. It was fun to figure out. I would have played it for way longer if it hadn't unfortunately stopped working after I played three levels...
In the beginning I struggled to recognize the water tiles as such, but when I did the game became a little easier. I was wondering if they were badlands at first, since I couldn't plan anything on them, haha. The only other problem I had was that I seemed to keep losing leaves while moving them from tree to tree? I couldn't figure out exactly what was causing it, but I just played more carefully and it worked out.
The music was great and a perfect match for each season! I wish I could have heard more of each, but I found myself skipping right back to spring most of the time... All the other sound effects were also nice and fitting! I see a lot of potential in this, with some tweaking it could be even more engaging! Good job! (I also really liked the end leaf animation! Very smooth!)
Thank you very much for playing the game and this is some truly helpful feedback.
Yes I appologies for the game going to a black screen part way through, I had an issue with my initialization logic which is also used during the reset logic which causes the game to fail to play.
The water unfortunately never got it's animations implemented which probably would have helped with identifying what it was but that will come to the game in it's next update.
I also found myself spending most of my time in spring which was unfourtunate cause I really appreciate the music in the game made by the wonderful Soseki. I'm on the fence with I just make the game entirely play out in only Spring now and when you press the button to change season it just runs your through each seasons condition to see if you survived it all.
Once again, thank you very much for playing the game! means a lot to me!
It's a nice little game. It creates a cozy atmosphere, the art style, the music and how everything is composited together is coherent. It is pretty intuitive how it works too, and hex-tiles are always a nice approach to such games. My only critique would be regarding the gameplay loop as-is; because there isn't really any "resource management" to it. You're in spring, spread the trees to the next tile and add 1 resource to that new tree (so investing 2 resources / 3 if not a grass tile yet), and then spam-click change season until the tree is fully grown. Repeat until game is over) Fully-grown trees seem completely self-sustaining (or not even able to die at all), so in spring you can just use up all resources you have to spread out. (also I'm not sure what is supposed to happen at the end of the game, for me it just turns black and nothing happens anymore, I assumed it should loop back to the starting phase)
Nonetheless a very well polished cozy game, and with a bit more depth and variety to the resource-management gameplay-loop, it could be something pretty cool to play!
Thank you very much for playing the game, I appreciate it very much.
Yes the cheese for insta growing your tree fully grown wasn't something that I was able to solve with the simple mechanics that I could get done in the time available to me. I also used to have an issue where if you spammed season changing you could fully fill your trees resource capacity which I solved by having winter empty your resources instead of just taking the survival cost. I've had a thought where there would also be animals accessible on the board which you'd spend resources on to maintain their survival. Then the survival of those animals would allow you to grow and also spread your seeds instead of relying on season changes for growth. I intend to make a later update to this game with a change like that.
Sorry that you got the black screen 😅, I had some issues with my builds on submission day which caused some issues. Some of the time the game fails to run at the start or on a reset. The game is meant to play an animation of a leaf flying away from your first tree and flying to a new generated board and reviving one of the trees where you start the process again.
Once again thank you for playing and I hope you check it out again when I release an update on it with performance polish and new mechanics to better flesh out the core loop of the game.
