I absolutely adored the imagery in this story. It was beautiful, unsettling, whimsical, and disturbing all at once. It reminded me of a Studio Ghibli movie.
I loved the ending. It was very bittersweet. It makes me wonder if Cassie and Josie will ever meet again.
What I would recommend is to brush up on your prose. I noticed a few grammar errors and textual inaccuracies. If you're able, I recommend either reading or listening to an audiobook of the original Alice in Wonderland. This story reminded me of it in a lot of ways, and I think that kind of prose could be a good example to look towards.
Ooh sure, I'll listen to it before I start work on the new version of the story. I love the original story but never had the chance to listen to any audiobook/radio adaptations, so i'll check some out.
Thank you for reading as well!
There's a lot of cool imagery in this book! I like how the fantastical things that happen aren't outright horror at first: The animals, the trampolines, the swamp. It eases us into the dreaminess of it all before the nightmares begin.
Even with the body horror warning, I was not prepared for the conductor's transformation. Very creepy. Also the climax in the ocean, racing towards the building as the clock was chiming was very tense!
Finally, the ending of Cassie running into Josie in the real world was a nice way to wrap things up. Great story! (and I'm looking forward to the new version whenever that comes out!)
Thank you!!!
This was such an interesting and entertaining read. I loved the dreamscape journey direction you went in with this story. Having a little background on Cassandra in the beginning was helpful, as it allowed me to imagine everything else going on. The addition of Josie added another dynamic to the story I wasn't expecting but still liked. Then the main strangeness of the journey was exciting to read through.
I was in anticipation of who or what would pop up next. I think the same went for whenever the Conductor made an appearance. He was the right amount of creepy, mysterious and generally unsettling in the best way for this tale.
I also felt at ease with the way you wrapped up the story and Josie's fate. Overall, I truly enjoyed your work!
Thank you for reading and I really appreciate the reply!!! I'll be posting a new version of the story sometime after the jam that will include some new scenes, (as well as fix some spelling and grammer errors.)
This was a rather unsettling, nightmare-like story. The strange mutability of dreams does come across in the strange visions that Cassie and Josie find along the way. The text could use some revision though.
Thank you for reading! I'm planning to revise the story once the jam and two others that I'm now in ends to fix spelling and grammer mistakes in it as well as add some new scenes in to help build Cassie and Josie's relationship and explain some plot elements.
This story brought to mind a number of properties. The way the Conductor acted and eventually warped into this monstrous form reminded me of Coraline. The way everything has this nonsensical structure made me think of the ENA videos/game. And there was a strong resemblance to the indie horror series “The Deep Sleep Trilogy”. It’s a very compelling premise, having a woman in a deadly dreamscape and finding a companion.
It was hard at times to follow the story due to the grammar and spelling: capitalized letters when they weren’t needed, complete sentences, etc.
The characters in the story don’t act too concerned overall in the story until things start ramping up. I wasn’t sure if that was because they were trapped in a dream and thus would be affected by it. I would have liked to find out more about Josie and Cassie as they roamed the train.
This feels like a story that would be really cool to watch visually: with shifting environments and fantastical art style quirks. It was easy to visualize, and it was an interesting approach to horror. Traveling via a dream train is a really cool idea, but at the same time, not too much travel-based storytelling happens. It would have been really cool to have the destination the train is heading to be described and shown, even if the characters escape before reaching it.
Thank you for reading my story! I really apperciate the feedback and criticism you've given to it, I don't really get much of that for my stories so it's great when someone does post something like this so I can improve on my work.
Once the Jam ends I'm planning to do some edits for it so I'll take what you said in mind.
Glad the criticisms are taken to heart. I try to be as even-handed as I can be with stuff like that, but it's 100% from a place of investment. Want to see the best version of what people can make.
