I really like how quickly we're just thrown into the story. Everything about the setting, the characters, and the situation are explained very naturally and efficiently through the first conversation.
Nipparad and Waylorn are fun characters, and I think their dynamic works really well! I also think that you did a great job at giving every character a distinct voice.
Overall this is a very exciting and intriguing peak into this world. Great book!
It felt like a glimpse to a much larger story in the best way possible. I loved how Nipparad was running away from becoming a monster like the people she used to work with/for and encounters a different kind of monster in the mutants who were chasing after her.
I also enjoyed Waylorn and how he contrasts Nipparad by facing these kinds of monsters head on instead of playing nice like how Nipparad used to. I also enjoy my westerns and this was scratching that itch very well!
Thanks for the comments! I like to experiment with different genres of stories for this one particular world, and yes, this time I wanted to do a Western. Glad you enjoyed it!
I really fell in love with your writing style. You set the scene so well of the classic train adventure with a welcomed sci-fi twist. I'm an avid fan western/sci fi combination, so reading this hit the right spot for me.
From the journey of setting up the premise then the journey of the train itself held my attention. I felt as if I was physically turning page after page in anticipation to see where you took your adventurers.
I especially loved the conversations between Waylorn and Nipparad. All of it felt so natural, full of life and of the time for the story's setting. I had no issues imagining Waylorn and Nipparad in front of me speaking as I read through.
Regarding the main conflict- I have to say it took me by surprise. This part was very action packed, keeping me at the edge of my seat. The world building fleshed itself out nicely despite being a short tale.
The end was the cherry on top to this cool adventure. I greatly enjoyed your work!
Thanks a lot for the response!
I absolutely adored this story.
The world building was done subtly, but in a way where I could follow along without having it be dumped on me. It made me want to read more of this world, and more of the characters.
I found the interactions between Nipparad and Waylorn absolutely delightful. I loved reading the nervousness and despair from Nipparad as she was forced to leave her life of comfort to be in a life similar to Waylorn's. I especially love how Nipparad's concerns were backed up by the raid.
The action was also very well paced. It dragged just long enough without filling up too much of the story, and was tight and exciting. I found myself on the edge of my seat a few times.
My only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen some more internal conflict, using the prose to see the characters' thoughts a bit more. For instance, I felt the scene where Nipparad puts her face in her hands happened a bit abruptly. A couple of lines in the prose showing that the reality of Nipparad's situation has settled in would have helped.
Aside from that, I really loved this one, and I hope it's only the beginning of a series because I would love to read more. Keep writing!
Thanks a lot! While this isn't necessarily planned as being part of a series, it does fit in a larger body of work set in this same fictional world (although not with the same characters). The main book I'm writing (I've posted a few chapters online) is "The Heplion Contingency", but there are a couple other stories I've written in this world here and there.
This kind of story has been told many, many times, especially with a western heist style. But with that said, I cannot deny how well-presented and appealing this was to read. The best writers are able to take tired tropes/plots and still make them interesting. The world created here is fascinating without being overbearing. Both characters immediately stand out and are very likeable. It tells a tight story, and leaves plenty of breadcrumbs to want more.
It makes me think of Samurai Jack, mixing a lot of time periods together: in this case, SciFi and Western. The clash of cultures between our protagonists was handled very well. The dialogue was believable: very human.
I would absolutely love to read more set in this universe, especially when it comes to the company Nipparad is fleeing to expose.
Thanks! The story is set in a world with a very specific premise (Cyberpunk / Space Opera with low-tech and psychic powers taking the place of technology) I've been writing other stuff on, which hopefully comes across in some of those crumbs. But I didn't want to get too much into that in the description or other ancillary materials, since after all the story is supposed to be accessible to anyone that hasn't read the other stuff.
Yeah, I suppose the core idea is pretty old hat... But hey, it's still worthwhile to play in a familiar playground sometimes, right?
