in the jam description, you guys talked about building the financial literacy collection. I have a different interpretation of the theme that doesnt fit finances. Is that okay or would that heavily impact my chances of winning?

Hi DragonDaGameDev! We are primarily looking for games that fit within our financial literacy collection. However, we do not want to discourage developers who may have other interpretations! You may not win the main prizes, but we have mentioned to other developers that if the game is really polished and well done, we could offer a non-exclusive licensing opportunity with the developer.
