A gay survival horror game of lust and terror. · By
Hello everyone,
I've been hard at work addressing the feedback and bug reports you've submitted. Here is the latest progress on Boys in the Dark:
The issue with the Key Verifier has been officially resolved. If you were having trouble activating your copy, please try again using your original key.
(Key Format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX)
Some of you have reported crashes or freezing when transitioning to Map 2.
The Cause: Since this is a new build from an indie developer, some Anti-Virus programs flag the game as "suspicious" when it attempts to write player data to your hard drive during scene transitions. This is a false positive, but it causes the software to block the game, resulting in a crash.
Please ensure you are running the most recent version. You can download the latest build from the same download link provided on the game page.
I haven't been able to play any of the games I downloaded since I got them. I'm really frustrated. I really like the games you made because I'm in Asia and there's a time difference between us. I can't give you feedback immediately. I'll try playing the game after work, but it still doesn't work today.
Nothing to do in the first map and still not able to go to the second map, just stuck on click anywhere to continue. Also SOOOO many bugs. When you get grabbed by a zombie, the camera is permanently fucked. Sometimes the game tells you you can press something like F10 and suddenly I'm doing some sort of magic? The tips menu is telling me about pressing B for a list of skills/spells or something. Like, how was this game even made.. Often when you shoot directly at the head and invisible wall stops the bullet. Very disappointed right now, might check back later but after all the delays, promises and waiting to get this, really irks me.
Hi lradnum, we sincerely apologize for the frustrating experience. A new coder recently joined our team and overhauled a lot of the game's systems, and unfortunately, we pushed this build out before it was fully complete and tested. I have already forwarded all the specific bugs you mentioned to the development team so they can be fixed ASAP. Thank you for your patience while we sort this out! T.T
Hey, just wanted to report a weird bug at the church gate. The cutscene glitched out—the NPC and my gun vanished, though I could still hear the audio. When it ended, I was stuck with no weapon, and the NPC actually started kicking me into the zombies!
I tried reloading my save from right before the gate, but now the interaction prompt to open it is gone entirely, so I'm soft-locked. Hilarious experience, but figured you'd want to know!
Also when I saw theres a special move with the penis monster I got excited but got dissapointed when I found out it was just a finisher kick. Hope u can make more spicy finishing moves in the future?
Hi
I have a problem with rifle.
When Rowan give the Rifle , i can un-equip the weapon but it does'nt appear in inventory . I can see ammunitions but not the riffle itself, so if i wanna change weapon i can't use rifle again.
in addition when I go to sewer, the weapon is not present. Ennemies drop ammunitions but it's unuseful without the rifle.
Thanks
I'm glad you like the game! Sorry about the glitch and losing your items. I'll forward this bug to the team so we can take a closer look.
Just a heads-up that this is still a WIP build, so bugs like this are bound to happen. If you want a completely smooth, bug-free run, I'd highly recommend waiting for the final release. Thanks for playing and bearing with us! <3
Alex's blendshapes/shapekeys need to be fixed, his ears darken when he talks, his chest shadows intensify also, among other things, i happen to work in Unity a ton and i know the fix (i think) for this, i'll attach an image:

By clicking his FBX within unity, this option will appear in the Inspector. Apply it! <3 Legacy Blendshape normals.
-------------
Sewer zombies have these nametags above their heads, previous ones have no healthbars or forms of identification like these guys do.

-------------
Rowan's random strand of hair when first sitting on the sofa with him seems to lengthen off for a little while, but resets itself shortly after - Also notice the intense black shadows on Alex's body? that's from Blendshape issues i think!:
-------------
Another mention: the assault rifle gifted to Alex from Rowan disappears pretty shortly after obtaining it. Also theres a common issue where the guns being held in the hands just float and end up being shot from Alex's Chest region, very odd but kinda funny!
-------------
Also - CAN WE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HAVE AN OPTION TO FASTFORWARD THROUGH CUTSCENES SO WE DON'T HAVE TO REWATCH THEM SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO THE GAME HAVING TO RESTART TO FIX ITSELF!??! i know F1 makes the cutscenes super slow, but can there also be a super fastforward button too?? please?? as much as i enjoy watching Alex fuck Rowan, i didn't need to sit through their dialogue leading up to it 5 times yesterday, all because of glitches causing me needing to restart the game. PLEEEEEASE!
-------------
May i also recommend - a Streamer-safe mode? where all cock-based stuff is covered? i HATE censorship but i want this game to be big, and having an option in the settings to make it "friendly" would make it able to be livestreamed etc
-------------
Also - the Toilet with the hunk in it in Rowan's hut didn't load in for me, even after several resets.
Wow, thank you so much for this incredible breakdown, GaySwishy ! xD Honestly, getting a bug report with exact Unity fixes (the Legacy BlendShape Normals tip is gold!) and screenshots makes my life so much easier. :p
I'm definitely checking that Unity setting right away to fix Alex's weird shadows :O, n dive into the project to fix Rowan’s escaping hair strand, the vanishing rifle, and that hilarious 'shooting from the chest' glitch. Those sewer zombie nametags were actually debug tools I forgot to hide, so they’ll be gone in the next patch, and I'll check why the toilet hunk didn't load for you.
Also, I hear you loud and clear on the fast-forward butto. I’m incredibly sorry you had to sit through that intro dialogue 5 times yesterday just because of glitches forcing a restart T.T. That’s a massive pain, the skip button is done currently and it will be up in the next build.
As for the Streamer-Safe mode, that is actually a fantastic idea. :D I want the game to grow and get out there, so having an optional SFW toggle for livestreaming is definitely going on the roadmap.
Thank you again for the amazing feedback and for wanting to see the game succeed, Swishy. Stay tuned for the next update! <3
Bugs/issues I've encountered
1. The zombie in the beginning won't even move
2. The soundtrack of zombies moaning gets annoying, and it should peter out once they're killed
3. Rowan addressed Alex's name in the beginning, then asked for his name again during the cutscene in the cabin
4. The zombies/characters get stuck very easily
5. Can't skip the cutscenes
6. Your UI isn't really user-friendly. Either give us a tutorial, or just simplify it.
7. Weird camera angles all the time. Sometimes it slants left/right, but the worst is when it zooms into Alex's legs
8. Is it necessary to give away so much ammo? Isn't the point of a survival horror game based on... survival?
9. Is it too much to ask for an autosave? How would I know the fume in the sewer is poisonous and would kill Alex the second he steps into it? Can't you give a hint or something? I'd really hate to reload and restart from the cabin cutscene again. Also, you know, there are two Rowans during the sex scene? One is the one having sex, while the other is just beside them, holding a gun.
I'm not trying to be mean, but it seems like this game will take another half a year to polish.
Wow, thank you so much for this super detailed breakdown, kitsunekooo! This is exactly what we need during Early Access to actually make the game good. :O
To be honest, you hit the nail on the head with most of these <3. Here’s what we’re tackling right now based on your list:
You’re 100% right, the game still needs a lot of polish, and we’re fully committed to putting in the work. Thanks again for the awesome support and for helping us make the game better, kitsunekooo. Stay tuned for the upcoming updates! :O
Greetings Unikorn and team!
I really love what you are creating! I love the designs and the atmosphere in the game so far. I think I speak for nearly everyone here in saying that we are probably mostly here for the guys. I really love the designs you came up with so far in the game! I have not made it very far into the game yet but Alex and Rowan are both really hot. I am excited to see the rest of the characters as the story unfolds! Having said all that, I have had a few consistent bugs in my playtime so far.
In the most recent build the first zombie did not trigger the initial cut-scene and I was not able to interact with him. The key to leave the church was not in the drawer in the tower; however it did appear in my inventory after opening the drawer. In the second area where you meet Rowan zombies were constantly being caught on environmental geometry. I was never able to leave the cabin after the first major cut-scene. When I clicked on the door it did not allow me to leave. The gun would randomly de-spawn from Alex's hand. This bug required me to go into the inventory and un-equipp then reequip the gun to fix the problem. One personal quibble. While I like Alex's voice, and I feel that it suits him, I am not as big a fan of Rowan's voice. I assume they are AI generated. Rowan's voice, I feel, did not fit him very well and the pitch changed multiple times in the cut-scene in the cabin after you meet him. I assume the pitch issue is probably a bug.
I am sure many of these things are already being looked at and fixed. Thank you for the continued work on the game! One last question, I noticed in the game files there is a .dll for dlss. Are dlss or fsr planned to be supported at all? Also, will there be any other resolutions offered once the game launches? Thank you again, looking forward to playing through the entire game.!
You make my day again DaedalusEagle xD Thank you so much for the amazing support and the kind words! It really means the world to hear that you’re loving the atmosphere and the character designs—Alex and Rowan would definitely be flattered xD Knowing that the guys are hitting the mark is exactly what keeps me going! <3 <3
Also, I can't thank you enough for this incredibly detailed bug report. Since the game is in Early Access, feedback like this is gold. xD
Here is what's going on with the issues you found:
The Church Zombie: fixed (not uploaded yet)
Cabin Door: I've forwarded to the team to take a closer look
The Tower Key & Disappearing Gun: The key should definitely show up in the drawer before moving to your inventory, and that gun glitch is related to the weapon equipping states. I'm working on a fix so you don't have to keep un-equipping it.
Zombie Pathfinding: Yeah, the infected love getting stuck on the walls right now. I'm actively tweaking the navigation meshes and collisions in Rowan's area to smooth things out.
About the voices: Yes since we have a tight budget, they are indeed AI-generated. I’ll be re-rendering and tweaking his lines to make sure his voice stays stable and actually fits his vibe better. <3
DLSS, FSR, and Resolutions:
DLSS/FSR: Good eye spotting that .dll file! Yes, they're absolutely planned. I've been doing some initial testing, and proper support for both DLSS and FSR will be fully integrated.
Resolutions: Definitely. The current options are pretty barebones, but the full release will support a wide range of standard resolutions and aspect ratios.
Thank you again for your patience and for helping me polish the game. Hope you enjoy the rest of the journey wif the boys! :p
GaySwishy, we hear you! You want to know the inner workings? xD Well, here is the honest, literal truth: our coder got hit wif a severe case of diarrhea and has been completely out of commission for the last few days. He is finaly back on his feet (and out of the bathroom), and we'll be uploading the new build within the next 24 hours. Thank you so much for caring so deeply about the game and for your patience. We really appreciate your passion! <3
Hey Sunate, thanks for checking in! :D Full transparency: our main coder got hit wif a nasty stomach bug and has been completely out of commission 4 the past few days. The rest of the team's still hard at work polishing other parts of the game, but we have to wait for him to recover to put together the new build. We really appreciate your patience and passion for the game <3! We'll get that update out as soon as he's back. :O
I loaded my most recent play, and all my guns and weapons have disappeared, on multiple reload attempts. I can't even seem to get it back into the aim/fire mode, disappeared from the centre health icon circle at the bottom right. I believe i had a pistol and another rifle. It is nowhere to be found. Also meele attack is incredibly hard to activate and use effectively without being bitten first in close distance. Had issues with the world camera view and the ground tilting to 45 degrees, with physics still falling parallel to the ground. When taking items from around the map, the inventory UI is unviewable, blocked by a massive white rectangle, luckily can only find the "take all" button that can be pressed.
These are quite game breaking bugs that makes it extremely hard to come back to at this point.
Hi Ethanol, I am so sorry you ran into all this mess :p .
Thank you so much for detailing these bugs, I've forwarded them to the team. That massive white UI box and the wild 45-degree camera tilt are definitely high on our fix list. We're also removing the melee feature :D
We are a tiny team and still ironing out the Early Access jank, but fixing these critical issues is our top priority for the next hotfix. Thanks for your patience and for helping us catch these!
