This was really fun! I was confused at first when trying to WASD and spawning a lot of bricks. After figuring it out it was a nice platformer challenge to get to the end - the levels and progression were very nicely designed. Overall, the character controller felt great, and generally did what I wanted it to. I enjoy the game mechanic, however I was really paranoid about soft-locking myself. It would be nice to have some solution to remove bricks, whatever would play well with the game design.
Here's a playtest
I don't think I've seen this concept done quite this way before, where the bodies you leave behind can block your path in addition to acting as platforms, which is interesting! A game like this definitely needs some way to remove bodies though, or at least just reset/remove them all. It was interesting at first to accidentally block a path I was working on and have to make a new one to go around it, but eventually I reached a point where that happened and I couldn't continue forward because of it :( I also found the jump sound a little to loud, and it got old pretty quickly. I loved the music though, and the art was nice too!
The bit of the game I got to play was chill, although a bit repetitive; unfortunately when I got to the second level, I encountered a bug (?) where my character would suddenly disappear about halfway across the chasm and reappear at the beginning of the level, so I couldn't progress.
Felt like I was playing Jump Knight, and my greatest enemy was myself for where I placed the blocks!
Good job on the game, it was a really good platformer!
cool original idea, funky music! it becomes a little tedious building your own platforms and if you make a bad placing you have to do a work around. maybe there should be a little more direct exploration and only intermittently having to build your own way?
I really enjoy this style of puzzle in games. Solid job putting this together.
Once I realized what I needed to do in most screens, the act of making it happen wasn't as fun. I discovered some patterns I could use to reliably platform without giving myself ceilings or otherwise blocking myself from using previous platforms - that part felt interesting, like a self-made playbook. But there weren't many challenges to those patterns in the level design.
Overall, really appreciate the simple control scheme and real-time telegraphing of being able to stamp yourself. The rest I had to figure out after a few browser refreshes.
Fun little game, audio was not working for me though :(
As others said, a reset button or a way to undo some last moves would be nice, I locked myself out of completing the game. Interesting nonetheless, congrats :)
Neat premise, but I'm not sure it translated to fun gameplay for me. With unlimited respawns and no other limiting mechanic there's no real need for mechanical skill nor forethought in how you place the blocks, it's purely a matter of persevering until you stack enough of them. It was well polished, the core mechanic worked smoothly and moving elements in the later stages play well with it.
I think the start of the game was bugged for me and I didn't know what the controls were (looked like it was bugged out on the waterfall). Eventually I figured out the movement controls. The only thing that was painful was making a jump that transitioned screens, it was too tricky since I couldn't see where I was going and would have to blindly and quickly try to react in time. Reset would have been nice too like others commented.
Overall, pretty neat concept for a jam game, mostly self explanatory / intuitive.
This was a great premise, but I, like many before me, got stuck without a reset button. It was fun though!
I enjoy this type of game, so this was an easy high rating for me :) I think it's about where it should be coming out of a gamejam. The puzzles get a little samey, and there's not much thought to it, but how many mechanics do I expect you to make for a gamejam, right?
It'd be interesting to see where you would go for a full game. It's already got that Animal Well aesthetic, it could easily go into the esoteric puzzle rule discovery direction
Great premise, I got it fairly quickly. The main issue I had was that it was too easy to trap myself.
I'd like a bit more juice around turning into the block, resetting, dying etc. there's a lot left to squeeze!
It'd be nice if you tightened the character controller a bit more for this kind of precision platforming, it's quite swimmy. And there's no coyote time which makes everything even harder.
Loved the art! Very cute.
Thanks. It's a really nice asset.
The tweeking was mainly just added the player and the bricks and then some soft animations (like the torch).

solid submission! The design is indeed self-explanatory, very good depth with minimal setup. Unfortunately, I got stuck around level 4 or 5, and without a reset button, I couldn't finish. Still, a great entry. The character controller is simple but feels responsive, completely free of the usual game jam jankiness. Good stuff!
Thanks for the feedback. I have funny feeling I know where you got stuck, I think it might catch a few people (if not all).
I might look at little tweaks after the jam just for completeness sake. With the reset, I didn't know whether to allow resets, or try to use the Itch page itself as a restart button. I did put some thought into letting the player wipe the screen of bricks, but then I thought that it would make some it a bit trivial. I might make a small change after the jam to give some relief though.
Side note: The character controller is an inbuilt feature of Gdevelop. It works pretty well and you make some changes to get it working to your needs.
Bro... this game belongs to the notdoppler's list
I had to look up what that was (wasn't big into flash).
I'm still a little bit confused by thanks?
Notdoppler was the best place to play some flash games back in the day. They released the best games every thursday.
