Super cool visuals, love the old school look, the style reminds me a bit of an upcoming Steam game called Cavern by Dogma Quest if you've heard of it. You nailed the lighting and eerie world feel of the terrain, great job with the overall aesthetic. Even the bare bones inventory fits in very nicely in the world. I struggled a bit to understand what to do in terms of gameplay, and I think a bit of player on-boarding would go a long way. That being said, the art and presentation were excellent to me. Keep up the good work!!

Thanks,

Yeah, a little tutorial would have been nice, I would take some times to do it next time.

I have checked Cavern by Dogma Quest and I don't see the parallel others that it's old, Cavern is in the graphical style of The Legend of Zelda (1986) and Ebb&Burden is in the graphical style of Diablo II (1997) and Populous: The Beginning (1998), it's a decade apart in a period of market's explosion.

I was near to remove the inventory and items from the released version, players doesn't see their own stats (mainly movement speeds on different terrain) and the influence of items on stats.

Nice Assets you got there! reminds me of Diablo! 🔥🔥🔥 nice work!

Developer

Thanks,

I was indeed thinking of Diablo II (Act II) when making it for the vibes and graphics.

Here the sprite sheet of the monster 10 times smaller. Most of the project time was used to make the sprite sheets of the 3 characters.

I made a python script to generate each frame from Blender and compose it in those sheets. In the game they are far and we don't see too much details, but it was done with those 3D models: They were made from concept arts and animated with mixamo. I also generated sheets with normals and reflections for better lighting but I didn't have time to implement it.

Didn't know about lib SDL. Very interesting thanks for putting me on to it. Nice game!

Developer

Thanks.

The library SDL is one of most popular portable window library used to obtain the context for graphic libraries like OpenGL, Direct3D and Vulkan but it also gives functions to directly draw in the window, it also give functions for audio and inputs / outputs. It's ported on many devices like game consoles and smart watch. Many games use it like Counter Strike or Factorio. It is compatible with emscripten to build a web assembly.

this art style is crazy cool and I really like the concept :)

also very impressive to have such an inventory and shop system for a 2 day jam

good job :)

Developer

Thanks, I was not sure if techniques used by games 25+ years ago was pleasing nowadays.

I am happy to have removed most visual artifacts for the land generation.
The inventory system is easy to do, what takes times are all the visuals for it and I have nearly none. The AI for bots and monsters was more challenging, in this last version they are too far from camps but before they were attired around due to all pheromones emitted by players with items, bots turned out not too bad able to choose to climb rocks to avoid monsters.
