Issue with posting game

I have finished creating my game and I am working on posting it, but the page keeps giving me the message:

There was a problem loading your project:

Zip contains file that is too large (Who Was Kyle/Build/Who Was Kyle.data.br)

Please try deleting the ZIP file and uploading another one.

Does anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it? The file that is too large (data.br) has a size of 206,591 KB, and I have already tried deleting everything that I don't need from my project as well as removing unnecessary components from my game in order to try and shrink the file size. The only thing that I can think of that I can still do to reduce my game's size is deleting large chunks of my level in order to remove as much data as possible (which would be a last resort since my level is not that large to begin with). Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my first game jam and I would like to make sure that I am doing everything correctly.

It sounds like you are trying to upload a browser/HTML5 game, so it would be played on your page? If yes, this is due to zip file requirements.

  • You can try upload the game without making it a browser game.

  • make a copy of your current project and delete part of the level. Do the zipping again and see, if the chunk error disappears. this way you will know if it is truly the level map, not something else.

It is hard to advice anything without knowing technical details, you may succeed getting faster help from the official discord, if you haven’t tried there yet.

Here is the specifics /docs/creators/html5#zip-file-requirements

In summary

  • The ZIP file should not contain more than 1,000 individual files after extraction.
  • The maximum length of a file name including path should not be greater than 240 characters long.
  • The size of all the extracted content should not be greater than 500MB.
  • The size any single extracted file should not be greater than 200MB.
  • The filenames are case sensitive and should be encoded as UTF-8

Your number 206,591 KB is pretty close to borderline... 1MB = 1024  KB... so 206,591KB = 201.75 MB....

if you can squeeze out about 2MB you should be fine. When you zip up your project, perhaps don't let app default zip for you, you can tweak zip to give you maximum compression. Make sure you choose the correct settings. And like others already suggested, perhaps reduce some of the resources you added, like sound make sure you don't use wav or mp3, change to ogg. will significantly reduce your file size.

Hopefully this helps... i know it is pretty late as i just finished my own game.

If you have finished yours, let me know i wonder what you have made the game so large in size. Mine is only 44MB..

My game is here, when you have a chance please give it a try and let me know what i can improve upon. Thanks!

Thank you for the advice. I removed as much as I could from the project and ran the file through several online ZIP compression tools in order to reduce the size, and I ended up being just barely too big to upload. I am currently running the build through the Unity "Disk Size with LTO" option, which advertises itself as being the option that creates the smallest build possible, but it also says that it can take up to several hours to build. Does anyone have any advice for any effective tools that I can use to reduce the ZIP file size as much as possible? I used the top results from my Microsoft Edge search, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are better ones out there.

Did you set the build settings to Web project? Every ZIP folder must contain an idex.html page  (which is automatically generated when building a Web project) so that it can run in the browser properly.

I have the project in WebGL, but I keep having one file that is just barely too large to be allowed to be uploaded.

My apologies. I did not read this post thoroughly enough. I`m not really sure how you can compress that single file`s size but I hope you find a solution soon
