So, I tried this.  It looked like a lot of time was spent creating large worlds, but it was mostly empty of stuff to interact with aside from a few mutant human enemies.  The movement and battles felt a little clunky with certain areas weirdly hard to move through, with the unlevel terrain maybe causing problems, It seemly effected the enemies too, with them not knowing to attack you are not when right nearby you, or getting caught up and trying to run toward you without being able to move. I died a few time, and it respawned me in the area, which I suppose was intended.  But the game eventually crashed on me.

This isn't intended to make it sound all bad.  The world was expansive, and the music was interesting, along with the concept on exploring.

Thank you for the game!

Yes, like in your game I first had to integrate and adjust all the systems I needed (dialogues, notes, books, portal travel, minimap, compass, the crystal etc.) and building the world base before I could fill the levels with content. I was working on scripts which would help here but was unable to complete them because of bugfixing the other systems. In my tests I had fun though by looking for the next gate and fighting monsters alone. But after the rating phase the development will continue with more content.

A crash did never happen in my tests so I don't know what I could improve in this matter.

Thank you for playing!

Regarding the crash, maybe the game uses a lot of computer resources?  (e.g. memory/processing power?)  It crashed a couple of times, maybe caused by my switching programs, and took a bit of time to load, and had an occasional flicker.  That would be my initial thought.

Again, thanks for the game!

This reminded me a lot of the Witcher 2 or Fable! Visually this was really well processed. Everything looked really good when you only had 10 days to put it all together. Definitely ambitious to undertake a game like this but its good to learn these systems for something bigger! Good work!

This is an incredible work on the world and visuals for a gamejam. It really made me feel to play more and explore it. However, in the end I spent a lot of time running but not finding much :D I was fighting two enemies after entering the portal but then somehow I was teleported back to the beginning and thanked me for the journey. So I was not sure what I am supposed to do but I had some fun in exploring the game :) Thanks for this submission!

Thank you for playing! Great that you explored some of the remnants. Did you watch the crystal? It tells you when a gate is near.

More content is being prepared. When you were teleported back you obviously (and unknowingly) activated the personal portal rune which brings you back to the tower of your mentor. It is described in the dialogue, a note on the wall and in the help page.

I am glad that you had some fun in exploring the game.

It feels like an elder scroll or a witcher. Which is insane, because those games are made by complete studio of people, you did it just by yourself!
Thats the reason it feels empty and confusing!
I couldnt achieve what you did. Theres a lot of attention to detail and will to make this feels alive.
What is lacking, is due to time constraint, totally understandable, so did we all.

Developer

Thank you for playing! After all the comments about a too big and empty game with bad graphics, your words restore my faith in the quality of the game. Of course the others are right, too - a large level should contain enough meaningful content. This is the crux of every open world game, and it takes time.

As you have recognized, at first I had to create the foundation. I had started to fill the city and the wood areas even more but bugfixing was more important. The selection of the right music for the soundtrack needed some time as well.

Thank you very much for your comment. The Elder scrolls series and the Witcher were role models for this, and they have inspired me to get into GameDev in the first place. This was my first attempt to make a "bigger" fantasy game, admittedly an insane idea to do so in a GameJam - but as I explained in my devlog, Rick mentioned a similar plot which lead me to the decision to try it now and not two years later, as I had planned.

Of course the game will be continued, with more content, mechanics, people, story, lore - and maybe a better representation of the found connections.

I fired up the PC for this as I'm actually running a Mac for my main comp. The aesthetics is good but the visuals kept switching from within the building to the outside.  It's hard to move the character. It's nonetheless good effort for a solo developer in the short time frame. Well done.

Developer

Thank you for playing! I haven't seen any switching in my tests but I will check again. Maybe adjusting the camera parameters help in this part.

I try to be fair and candid about my reviews. This one seems like you spent a lot of effort to put together but a lot is missing for it to be a fun game.

-The way the character runs is clunky(animation and the turn rate) and the fact that she switches to walking after a few seconds is frustrating.

-The graphics makes my eye hurt. Flat lighting and repeating tile textures among others.

-Level design is very confusing. I have no idea where to go due to multiple path choices and no obvious direction. I think you made it more difficult for yourself by going for a large space with not much purpose.

Developer

Thank you for playing. At first: I used the butler tool to upload, with it you can go up until 2 GB (this is what I read, I have not tested more than 1.1 GB).

I was not satisfied with the character animation as well so I gave it already another animation (which looks good on preview) but the controller did not use it somehow. Maybe this will get possible with more time of examination. By the way, by pressing W again the character will continue to run so you'll never need to walk.
I had to made decisions, and at this time there were much else to do. After the rating, I'll continue to work at the game, and animation and lighting will be part of that.

It is an open world so it will give you no obvious direction. Many people dislike quest markers, even minimaps. To assist the player, there is the crystal which glows when a connection is in the vicinity. In a game about exploration and being cautious of monsters I think it would be contraproductive to put signposts or markers everywhere. And I had scripts which would fill some space to give more variety but they got not completed in time. On the other hand - dialogues, book pages, a help page, a journal and the story arc are there.

I think reducing your size (file and world) would help during the jam, the starting area is about as much as I would normally spend playing a game I'm unsure about. I stopped playing in the second area after I found a large dark statue, it just felt empty. I think showing off your intent and mechanics will help 'sell' your game better.

For those not on Windows, I'm not either. Most of the Windows builds run fine under wine.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing. I could not reduce the game to the starting area (the city) because the theme is about connections, and they are to be found if you use the portals - which you obviously did, and far as well, even without the help of the crystal. Congratulations!

Today I uploaded a fix for that so it is easier to find more connections.

94% of the game size are textures; I could make them smaller (and worse) but I could not reverse the process or I had to handle two versions of the game. I don't want more overhead, and the game does not get better when it looks worse. Regarding the world itself, the starting area is optional after a minute; you can leave quickly. But when you examine your surroundings as in any decent RPG, you find information or people you can talk to - they provide more story background. So I wouldn't reduce dialogues, books, notes.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "showing off your intent and mechanics will help 'sell' your game better". The intent was to make an action RPG as good as possible in 10 days, beginning with the most important mechanics like moving, talking, fighting, using objects (there is a help page for that). Secondary, the special mechanics for travelling through portals and orientation including the necessary lore. And, a variation of places to travel to. Of course a wood or a swamp may seem empty but there are castle-like places, too, and often you find monsters which hunt you. I had scripts which would add still more variations but I had to fix some bugs on the way so I was unable to complete them. For ten days, I think the game is rather decent, and after the review period I will continue to add content, of course.

Finding the connections more easily helps a lot. Knowing the textures are whats increasing the size makes sense to me now. I have limited exposure to 3D development, and it didn't cross my mind. For 10 days it really impressive, and I like what your building up to.

Screenshots look great!  I didn't play because I'm not running windows. 😜

Thank you for looking! When you don't play but the game is interesting to you - I just made a devlog. ;-)
