Great vibe and aesthetic as ever.
What piqued my interest the most in this game was actually the dynamic between all the characters present and it got me into musing about a great many things.
How did the Queen truly feel about taking the lives of her subjects?
Was the knife the master manipulator using the Queen as a mere pawn to satisfy it's own eldritch bloodlust?
Or was the knife simply an enabler; a tool by which the Queen could amplify and strengthen her own inner demons?
The game evoked some truly deep questions which is highly impressive for a 1 day jam game primarily focused on atmosphere, suspense and a unique progression mechanic.
Felt almost Bloodborne-ish it's execution. Great work!
I felt bad for killing the butler and the maid but I had to do it to finish the game and it is too hard to do it without the powerups. As for the game it is very good and feels like a professional studio came into this game jam to submit a game they made in 24 hours WOW. I have to ask you this one thing though is the cursed knife the real villain in this game???
The way the game ended up cohering as I cobbled it together, the dagger is just like, something used for a right but gruesome purpose. If you trust the Queen's perspective, I think it's more anti-heroic, while if one does not, it's certainly villainous!
I was originally thinking of having a lot more innocent-type characters you could choose to take power from, but with the size of the map and the tone of the jam I ended up going with the two sympathizers. I still wanted to incorporate the idea though that even righteous revolutions are not these pretty like, everyone slays the dragon and goes home type things . So, while they willingly join the Queen's cause, they do not survive. If I did a full polished version it might be different, but it works well enough here ^^
I can relate to this since my mother used to go around doing something similar at night when we were kids. So I was actually really good at the game and beat it! Yippee! On a serious note I really liked this and it had a cool levelling up mechanic that worked well.
Difficulty was right on point and I like how the player had to tackle stuff in a certain order since I did fail a lot at the start but I got better and better 'til I beat it. The color palette was nice too and the game had a cool dark fantasy vibe about it overall.
One disappointment was that it was not longer but I totally get that because it's a one game a day jam and I would love to see something like this as part of a larger game or project. But as is this was a great experience. Well done!
Thanks for giving it a go! I'm relatively happy with how it turned out myself, given the constraints ^^
