Clever and well executed game.
I think it was a shrewd design choice on your part to set the game entirely on the overworld.
I have utilized this trick myself before and it saves a massive load of dev time not having to construct walls and separate rooms here, there and everywhere.
I felt like the balance of the encounters could have swayed to being a little more difficult. The enemy design was quite intimidating but I found that I always had a surplus of soldiers left over and so I went from initially fearing these towering grotesqueries to a feeling like I was hunting them down like I was the alpha instead of the other way around.
Of course this is just my personal preference and experience. I am sure I am probably in the minority in that regard and that others thought the difficulty was right on point and more balanced towards the player so I do appreciate that as well; it makes the game more accessible to a wider audience.
This is a cool experience that I encourage everyone to play. Awesome job and thanks for submitting!
I wasn't expecting this, it's a game with quite a dark theme indeed. It would almost be like if Dragon Quest was played in an airship on the world map or something. The monster is super creepy and I love that.
Thanks for giving it a go! I didn't have a lot of energy to put in to this one but I think it ended up quite alright regardless? Appreciate ya playing it! ^^
Interesting story for such a small game. This could easily be like a prelude for a longer game in the future, everything was set up quite nicely. I did find it kind of strange how the map scrolled horizontally and not vertically, I have not seen that trick used and it added a unique mystery to the game. Also the enemy sprite, even though it was only one looked really awesome!
I hope you don't think I am being mean but even though this is good I did enjoy your other game better so I kind of hope that one will get some nice ratings and that others like it too.
Thanks for playing! In trying to figure out how to do like aesthetically appropriate monster sprites for a rapid game I figured out a little process to uh process like a value painting into a the palette I like to use and at the resolution appropriate for RM2K? I used the same process for Night Queen's guard sprite and the 2 enemy sprites in Glorious Work ^^
I was going to make the map loop in both directions since than it feels more like a globe, but then given the limited palette I figured there wasn't like good enough landmarking for people to navigate very well and it would just be kind of a headache? So I limited the scrolling to the horizontal axis so at least you can sweep the map in bands if a player had to.
Night Queen I had more energy for and I had to start War of Overworld later in the day, and I think that shows, but I do like them both. Glorious Work (the practice game I did for the jam) makes it so I did end up doing 3 games in 3 days, and I was trying to do a fourth so I could have 3 jam eligible entries but I totally ran out of juice working on a bump combat system yesterday and had to hit the hay XD
You should have submitted the Glorious Work game to the jam too, nobody would have known if you made it a day early then you had three full games for the jam and would be the only person to achieve it. By the way don't follow my suggestion since I was the naughty kid at school :P
While it would be nice to have it officially on the record, I've always been kind of a stickler about such things, so I'll just have to accept it as the personal goal accomplished :P
