Looks beautiful. Had some issues with the interaction prompt, other than that, it was really good.

Developer(+1)

Thanks, yeah there's a bug on the interaction prompt that I couldn't fix on time.

Nice game. I was missing the connection to the theme a little, but it was a fun experience and great that you finished the game.

Developer

Thanks! For the connection part it was more about how the 2 characters work together to attain the goal. I didn't get time to add AI so it's more in their mission dialogue.

That’s quite a big game you managed to make! There are some minor issues, like:

  • “press E to interact” area could be adjusted (doesn’t pop up in some cases, so you need to approach the partner multiple times from different angles).

  • I got into the car and drove, but circles didn’t appear because i didn’t finish the dialogue, and it wasn’t very clear there was anything to wait for. “next” button in the dialogue may be the easiest fix.

It’s a solid jam entry overall, especially for 1 person team, well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah the interact trigger had some subtle bugs due to the way the components are being overlapped, not enough time to fix. The workaround would be to walk away and re approach at this point to retrigger the prompt. Agree about the car, didn't get enough time to polish that bit and several others more.

Haha, relatable! I work in UE myself, had this headache myself in my older game.

Developer(+1)

Interesting, do you remember if you had any particular quick fix for it at the time?

Submitted

for me it was more about trigger box placement and making the box big enough. For me text is also visible all the time, so it only disappears after I interacted with the message. So your “press E” text probably appears/disappears when the box is crossed, not after the player presses E.

You say components overlap, maybe you can put them all together inside the trigger box element? so they would not overlap, but will be a group of elements inside the trigger box item. I did it like that: image.png

There’s also different way to go about triggers, there’s trigger volume, trigger box and trigger area or something. They work differently and you can try to replace them. Or also it depends on what you chose, “on begin/end overlap” or similar options:image.png

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your detailed reply. In my case, the interact component involves identifying if the overlapping actor has a particular component and some other components can also do some things IIRC so that's where I'm suspecting the bug might be. Had to rush through to complete in time so couldn't check too much in detail.

I see, there’s almost too many ways to do the same stuff in UE! In any case, for a jam game as long as it playable, it is good. And it was a significant jump from your previous game, so the progress is obvious. That’s what matters, and bugs can happen even with AAA releases.

Very nice demo, impressive use of assets honestly, I love the sci-fi vibe and the gameplay reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog

Developer(+1)

Thanks, glad you liked it!

Good looking game, well done!

Developer

Thanks!

Wooow, nice aesthetic scene, it looks like Unreal Engine works hard in this characteristic. Incredible and very immersive.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Glad the visuals were to your liking, it took a lot of work to build it and I'm happy to see it was worth it! UE did help a lot with how Lumen enables incredible reflections and lighting so easily, minimising ghosting was a challenge but looks like it worked.

Yes, it is incredible all of the innovations having in Unreal Engine. They are the top to build video games with Unity. For me they are two dragons in the video game developing market.

I currently don't have one but will get one up soon so you can check it out. Out of curiosity, have you tested it under Proton, that might allow it to work?

Submitted

i don't have proton set up, but thanks for the heads up

Developer

I've added a demo video so you can take a look at the gameplay. Please let me know your feedback :)

Great game! It really encouraged me to just run around and explore what you built. I had a blast! :)

A minor suggestion: when going through a portal, it would be awesome if you could give the character an impulse (ideally maintaining their previous momentum). Even though it's a small detail, I think it would add a ton of 'juice' to the game.

Also, it felt a bit weird that the characters stand there in what looks like a modeling A-pose while idle, but that’s just my personal opinion and honestly doesn't matter for a short GameJam project. Maybe you can update the idle animation later if you continue working on it. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Hey, thanks for playing and enjoying the game as well as your kind and detailed feedback! Yeah I had to cut many of the flourishes such as many sound effects, music and things like adding an impulse on teleport due to time constraints, agree they'd improve game feel a lot. The A pose is an unintentional side effect of reusing the Manny and Quinn ABP, no time to redo the animations for the model pack I used for the characters so had to live with it to hit release. Actually finishing a complete game loop and the story for a jam, even a simple one, was quite an invaluable experience though. Hopefully next year we'll both have even better games for others to play!
