I didn't finish my game for this jam but thought I would try your game out after requesting some feedback in Discord! I always find is super helpful to watch Kris play my game on the livestream, so I've done a recording for you that I hope will help: Overdrive Oasis by WLHib | Cap Recording 😄

What I really liked were the visuals and vibe of the game, you've really hit the aesthetic and feel you're going for

My key bit of feedback is getting the player into the game as soon as you can and maybe trying to show the gameplay as an alternative to telling with the instructions screen at the start. You will see in my recording that I wasn't sure I had to jump into the rings even after reading the instructions, there's a version of this where you press start, land straight into the jet ski world, and drive into a few rings, instantly rewarding for the player, and/or having some onscreen UI helpers of the keyboard inputs?

One idea from me is having low and high rings, with low rings around the player in the starting zone that are visually distinguished from higher rings that require jumping

A huge thanks for your detailed feedbacks and video.
Yeah, not only I should have a "control reminder" instead of a long intro (to be suuuure the player wouldn't be lost even if they didn't read the game's page).
But also I should have given more "sense" to level's objectives, like your proposal for the rings and their height in this game.

I was just a bit too taken by the idea of making the aesthetic I want... plus the fact I had prioritized the "visual mood" in the three hours I had :' D. I'll balance that a bit more next time.

Thank you again !

I was also a bit disappointed, since I took the time to carefully review and rate quite a few games, but it turns out only 6/30+ people rated mine. It seems to really come down to quality over quantity in the end.

That said, I think one possible reason your game might not have scored as strongly in the “How well does the game fit the themes?” category is the lack of a clearly defined door or entry mechanic. However, I’m not fully convinced that’s the main issue, because I also didn’t implement a traditional door in the strict sense, and still received fairly solid ratings overall.

Apart from that, your ratings look consistently strong across the board, so the feedback is generally very positive.

Thanks for the support and your feedback ^^.
To be honest, your implementation was far more explicit, we're a badass hackerman in your game ! ; D

Awesome vibe and the controls feel super nice! Really an amazing work, even more when you know it was made in 3hours!!

Developer

So glad it felt nice to play !
I was quite afraid it was not "sufficient", particularly when you know my menu and some of my FXs (my lens flare that doesn't follow the sun at all x' D) are broken.

No worries, it is a complete game, in 3D, that I was able to play from beginning to end with fluid controls, fun gameplay and atmosphere, and no bug: it's more than enough for a trijam haha :D It gives the player a cool glimpse of a finished project ;)

Incredible Style (i love Y2K), great song and good controls

Developer

Love your comment  : D, it's so cool to share an obsession on that aesthetic.

love the aesthetics and the driving mechanics

Developer

Thanks ! : D
I'm super happy all of you found the look cool, despite some broken features (ehm... my lens flare :' )...)

nice love clean physics! ^_^

I'm glad you liked them : D !
Neverless, they're not the best, I tried to focus more on the feedback with so few minutes to create them :' ).

Its not my type of game but i  was instantly transported back to the Y2K  era. I  can't remember the name of the game but there was a super popular game just like this back in the late 90s early 2000s. If your goal was to go for that vibe then you definitely hit it.

I'd consider making this a longer form project with a story line or some type of gimmick. I can only assume there would be a  market of gamers looking for this type of content.

Great work.

Glad you liked it even if you're not fan of the genre ^^ !
Yes, despite the liminal vibe I was looking to infuse in it, it clearly has inspirations from water sport games of the era, especially Sega Surf Rocket Racer and Hydro Thunder. But with the short scope, I made it hyper simpler :' D.

NICE!! Arcologies is a perfect pick for the soundtrack. The controls here are fun and the aesthetics are super tight. I have a special place in my heart for games with cool water shaders.

I would love to play endless levels of jet-skiing around in this atmosphere. Really nice itch page, too :)

Thank you, plus, they're one of my favorite artists. I literally listened to this track on repeat all weekend x'D

I can also recommend Sawteeth, Wreach, Lifelikemovies, Milesperhour, Accelio, Castcadia, Major Axis, Pizza Hotline, Rainforest, LTJ Bukem, Takuya Nakamura, Sxnctuary, PHD, and MC Conrad...

And if you think this could be an idea for a longer (or even endless) game, I'm open to discussion !

Ooh, thank you for the recommendations. I've heard of a few of these artists but not most of them. I know what I'll be listening to later today!

I would love to see this game developed further! It works great as-is, but also could definitely be a prototype for a bigger project. Maybe more levels (or do make it endless)? Ramps and obstacles? Timed score attacks? So many possibilities :)

Love the aesthetic! Et merci pour la traduction francaise :)

Hi there ! Thanks, a pleasure to showcase my obsession for this specific mood.
