This game rules!
Saved it for around the end 'cause I knew it'd be good, sorry for leaving it 'til last minute.
Really fun gameplay, and the bosses were great with very nice tells, (some'd get ya if you hadn't seen it already, but that's to be expected in this kind of game, knowledge is king. Made it up to the serpent boss, but only had 2 hearts on my last life, so not enough hp in reserve to learn the pattern. Fire took one, dodged the second, got lunged ^^;;
I think I could get it next time, I'll definitely share it around though, there's a few people in my friend group that'd really appreciate this I think.
Started out rough, lost 2 lives in the intro, but had better luck in the boss fights.
Also finding my groove and quick tapping up and right helped a ton with fights.
Awesome game, graphics were a bit much for the system but outside of that pretty flawless, amazing work
Thanks for playing, I'm glad it clicked! Making it to the serpent is farther than most (and he is the end boss!)
Fun bullet hell, I just legged it.
I beat an early mini boss, eventually, but it is a hard game and the lead-in felt drawn out. Possibly a skill issue, but no one imagines losing when its their own game.
The audio was loud! VOD here (skip to 1hr) https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2801841931
Thank you very much for taking a vod, with lots of thoughts expressed! Just legging it is what you're supposed to do in this genre!
Good to know about the sound, I haven't gotten any feedback about the volume. Most people just turn down their computer I suppose.
The intro should have been skippable by pressing start, by the way.
Quite possibly the best art of any game I have ever seen in a gamejam! Fabulous work; may the jam gods smile upon Dasia.
Wow that's some high praise, thank you!
Fun game !
Tried multiple times but the game froze around the boat / medusa on the web version.
Note that on a controller you can press B repeatedly making it a machine gun.
Thanks for playing!
Yeah the freezing is frustrating. I really need to nail down what's going on with web stuff.
Also you should be able to hold down B and have it rapid fire, like in shmups and later contra games, so machine gun is not a problem!
This game was fun! Very reminiscent of Metal Slug. I THINK this is beyond the capabilities of the NES and felt more to me like an arcade cabinet game but I could be wrong. Nicely done!
Thanks for playing! On an NES it'd likely chug a bit and have flickering, but graphically I tried to adhere to 90s era NES games, adhering to palette limits but using tricks like scanline interrupt parallax or sprite multiplexing.
This is an amazing game the art, music, and gameplay are all pretty peak. I love that you even got a lil intro cutscene in the beginning. The only problem I have is I am not skill enough to beat it the best I did was getting to the 2nd boss.
Thanks for playing that far! Making it to the 2nd boss is nothing to scoff at!
The game looks great! I loved art and the music was pretty fire, it was a lil hard but i felt i was progressing with every death which is good, the first boss's hand movement was a little confusing because sometimes he moves his hands like he's indicating that he's going to attack but he doesn't, also there were too many enemies that i felt that i was overwhelmed by the sheer number of enemies with no enough time to react so it becomes more like a "die to learn" game, which is not bad you'd always rather make the player blame themselves for the mistake they made not game, other than that it's a very great game with enjoyable bosses, and i see "it's a horrible night to have a curse" themed used here, subtly but it works ;)
also maybe if you got some free time maybe you can check my game? i'd love to hear your feedback too :)
Thanks for the detailed feedback, it helps!
The bosses do have some fakeouts, but I made sure that they always move in the same memorizeable sequence!
nicee that makes more sense yeah, since you've made the sequence more memorizeable then that's def a great feature for sure, and yeah the fakeout def "faked me out" for sure XD
I defeated the Viper and lifted the curse, it took me 04:25 and a little more than 5 tries.
The game probably proposes sequences a console would struggle to handle (and parallax scrolling a dev would struggle faking this well ;) ) but the game looks great, sounds great and it's super fun and juicy with great staging as well, all these boss fights rock. Finally the difficulty was perfect for me, I had a ton of fun playing and the game was satisfying to beat.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for seeing it through!! Not many people have reported final times!
I agree on an actual console this would probably chug and have lots of sprite flickering issues lol.
The parallax (and the boat section as a whole) is inspired by the intense scanline interrupt parallax in TMNT3!
This one right here had some rockin' tunes and riveting, run & gun, enemy blasting action >:O When I started it up, I exclaimed "OH Yeah it's Contra style!" Also the UI and ship graphics look amazing :D
OH YEAH ITS CONTRA STYLE!!!!
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I absolutely adore this art style and the colors. The pause screen is a particularly nice touch that I enjoyed. I have to agree that the amount of enemies is quite overwhelming at times. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback!
Great contra-like! Too much enemies, but they all die in 1 hit so it all balances out! Bossfights are incredible, NES feel is nailed and overall i really really like this!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great game, additional 5 stars for the furry protagonist
:333
So much fun! So dynamic! It felt like playing NES! I miss Mega Man!
Me too!!!!! Thanks!!
Very inspiring pixel art and approach to shading. Feels so cohesive
Wow, thanks!
Everyone else in the comments said what I was thinking, so I'll just mention a small detail that I really liked. The pause screen is implemented in such a clean way. Having the background move despite the game being paused gives a sense of life to the game's world. I would love to see the game expanded on even after this jam, it's such a fun and unique experience. Great job.
Thank you!
Extremely well done! Who did the music?!
I did! :)
You rock!
Thank you for the detailed feedback! It helps a lot!
So much fun! I can't admit to being very good at these kinds of run and gun platformers, but the art and audio kept me going for multiple runs. I loved the creativity and the two boss fights I made it to were pretty epic, and I thought the horizontal background scrolling used to simulate the parallax worked really well. Unfortunately, my run ended on a softlock when transitioning from level 1 to level 2 (hit me up in Discord if you want a screenshot/logs or anything). I'll likely come back later to try and finish this one out after I've rated a few more games.
Thanks for the kind words!
Was it the web build? I think I had a similar issue on one of my web runs...
Yup! It was the web build:

Great game, even if the gameplay is a little hectic at times. Enemy shots can be a bit too fast, and sometimes there are too many enemies on screen at once. Still, it was a great experience overall, with a cool dynamic NES-style soundtrack :)
It can definitely be a little overwhelming, especially for people who aren't big into Contra games. Thanks for the feedback!
It's got a great NES feel! The graphics and sound effects are spot on! The boss was cool-looking, too!
Thank you!
