Great entry!
* The music is FANTASTIC, definitely nailed that Castlevania jammin vibe!
* I thought the core mechanics were solid. I really wish I had some kind of duck though. Or maybe if the werewolf dash functioned like a slide.
* I think the tilesets were overall effective, but sometimes the contrast was so high they looked like they were impassable when they were actually just bg. The yellow manor columns in particular, because they match the floors that CAN be walked on they look like walls.
* The character/monster art is all perfect, looks straight ripped from Castlevania.
* Lots of ladders to nowhere, who built this place??? lol. That one at the start of the game that just leads to getting hit by a bat is so funny to me. Would also be nice to shoot off of them.
Nice game overall!
Fun game!
A bit of awkward stuff left in, like some random collision on the map (presumably from later adding collision to one of the black tiles forgetting it was used at some earlier bits. Would recommend avoiding having tiles that are the exact same in usage/visuals in the tileset for this reason.)
Gameplay-wise it was fun! very Castlevania inspired, and the dash attack as the werewolf was fun. Wish there was a second phase to the boss where the moonlight shines through and you finish him in werewolf form. Maybe it was scrapped for time.
Fun little exploit while in werewolf form, if you press pause during a dash attack, the sprite and hitbox of the attack remain for the rest of the screen/until death.
Boss health didn't seem to update so I was surprised when they suddenly died, but for the most part it felt pretty polished. Nice!
Believe it or not we were actually planning on giving the boss a second phase where you fight as the werewolf! It was actually going to be his first phase out on the roof, and then the clouds cover the moon so you fight his second form as a human. We ran out of time before we could do it, but who knows, maybe a future build will have the boss as we originally planned it! Thanks for playing!
playing as a werewolf felt really good, combining the dash attack with platforming was a fun balance. like some of the others mentioned here it wasnt really clear that there were other levels and it was easy to skip over the best part of the game! I really enjoyed it though, great work!
I ended up beating the game twice as the first time I completely missed the levels and then got to the manor heads-on as suggested.
The game was very cool all-around, completely conveys the style it's trying to with the right controls and speeds, and the music is so, so good.
Thanks for sharing!
Great little platformer, though I don't think I got to change into werewolf form outside of the intro level? The audio and gameplay were both solid (great NES vibes!), though I also ran into the bug where the boss kept throwing axes and bats kept spawning into the title screen after I finished. Thanks for making and sharing your game!
Ahah, I was just writing that I missed the levels other than the manor at first, and I wonder if you did too. You can enter the 3 windows below the big door to the manor and at least 2 (or the 3?) levels are levels where you play in werewolf shape, or at least I think so.
I approve that final level
lol
The dead boss was still tossing axes and spawning bats on the win screen for me.
Yeah, this is a known bug and should be fixed when we release our latest build after the jam. Thanks for playing our game!
A game not afraid to show off its love of castlevania! Fantastic entry and atmosphere :)
yeah easiest 5 stars for the audio lmao, the music went so hard, i also clearly see the castlevania style here too, also i like how the werewolf's howl wasn't trying to be realistic and it just fitted the nes limitations, i liked how i had the choice of either getting stronger or going head on, but the thing is the boss felt too easy with me just having to stay on the very right part of the map and just spam attack and the boss was down in no time, making the feature of going through more levels to actually make the boss more doable kinda useless, plus some of the enemy placements in general ( but especially in the werewolf levels) was a lil frustrating, for example the enemy plants being placed near a gap in a way that when the player does a dash attack he either misses the enemy and gets damaged or just falls down and instantly dies :'), but other than that the art was pretty good too (even tho the zombie enemy that is just a reskinned player sprite with a green tint felt a lil strange lol), so yeah it's a really solid entry and the music/sfx def made the curse a lil easier ;) ;)
also if you have some free time maybe you can check out my game and drop some feedback there :)
I like the Castlevania style you went for, it feels very similar to playing the original on the NES. Transforming into a werewolf was really cool and I like that it changes up the gameplay, and I love how you got a wolf howl sound effect out of the NES-style sound limitations. Great job! Jumping through those windows felt really great too and way more exciting than just going through a door :D
I would have liked the ability to crouch, especially as so many of the projectiles look like they should be crouched under to avoid. However being able to dash through them as a werewolf was a nice touch!
Thanks for playin'!! Crouch was planned but I ran out of time, it'll be in a post-jam version.
Amazing! Thank you for replying - that's a Castlevania-crouch for sure!
Music and sound guy here to say I'm glad you liked the werewolf howl! That one was fun to make, and it's cool to see it appreciated!
Cool Castlevania-like music and graphics, especially love the title logo. Jumping through the windows to get to the different levels is a fun effect. The jump feels a bit weird, cause you stop moving horizontally the instant you let go of the directional button, and especially awkward when attacking as the human in the air even while pressing the direction. Most games would implement some form of inertia (like Mario) or have a fixed jump trajectory (Castlevania) for this. I liked the way the werewolf dash was used as a platforming skill, although sometimes it drove me mad that I couldn't attack enemies in certain situations without running off a cliff.
I love the castlevania inspiration with this one. Also I love the use of the jam's theme of having the werewolf as a playable character. I liked platforming with the werewolf's dash it was fun. Some of the jump were really difficult to pull off but I manage to beat the game.
This game is all manner of awesome! Amazing job capturing that classic retro NES feel with graphics, audio, level design, and gameplay.
I noticed a bug... after defeating boss, the projectiles kept spawning -- even into a new game. Also, the red projectiles from the plant things seemed to have no effect if I was on the ladder.
Great job!
Feels like you get to play a lot as the werewolf and not much as the person. Nice game though
I really liked this one! Really feels castlevania. I liked everything about it!
Pretty hard game, like castlevania! had fun exploring the manor with the music playing. the jump were pretty pixel perfect, had fun and good entry!
