This has so much potential! Great NES feels, good visuals, and great audio too! I'd be curious to see how it'd play differently if the foreground/background tiles had a little more contrast between them as it did make it a bit difficult to navigate the levels, but ultimately it was the collision issues that ended up killing my runs the most. Thanks for making and sharing your game.
Thanks for playing. We did notice the contrast thing but it was too late to fix it cause we noticed on the last day.
First of all, thank you for sharing such a fun game.
Everything—from the graphics and music to the sound effects—beautifully captured the golden age of the NES and filled me with a wonderful sense of nostalgia.
There were a few things that stood out to me, such as getting stuck inside walls a couple of times with no way to escape, and the final boss feeling a bit easier to defeat than I expected.
That said, fighting and dodging the vicious bats and mummies was incredibly exciting, and I had a great time throughout the adventure.
I never quite figured out what the "curse" was supposed to be, but I did manage to reach the ending, so I'm very satisfied with the experience.
Thanks again for making and sharing this game!
We didn’t want to make it too difficult for a jam, but if you spend enough time on any level the Pharaoh’s Curse engulfs everything. All existing weapon mods on the level suddenly become cursed variations; that’s probably the only non-obvious part. The rest of the curse’s effect is clearly visible. Hopefully, you will try it again so you can experience the curse. Thank you for playing and thank you for the useful feedback.
Cool!
Some of the tileset issues made navigating a bit hard, but otherwise it was pretty fun.
Loved the audio design in this one, very nice.
Brutal when a bat is approaching you menacingly and you're one one hp and the gun does damage to you, haha. But then I probably shouldn't have let it get to that point.
Blasted away Anubis in less than 2 seconds so I didn't get to see what he did, but I enjoyed getting there.
Thanks for playing. We noticed that too but it was a bit too late to polish.
Loved the game a lot! Graphics and audio are great! Gameplay is also good. Good stuff overall!
Thanks for playing!
Anubis has fallen!
I enjoyed the game. Especially as you have an Settings menu I wish there was an option to disable the life bars, as apart from that the game gives a strong NES vibe, among other things I really like that the boss fight is NES-like, and overall the enemy behaviour (these damn bats ;) ) and spawning are perfect for the jam, music and sound effects are too. The character controls well, I don't love the levels yet they could totally be part of an NES game, and the difficulty is pretty much perfect for the jam. I love the different weapons, they all feel strong in their own way. The time pressure and especially respawing when you die work well, and I feel like that must not have been the easiest thing to do (that you respawn in the right place).
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for playing. I'm glad you liked it. Appreciate the feedback.
The audio is really good. Had a fun time playing it
Thanks for playing!
i love the soundtrack, but the controls are cursed, if you made the controls easier it would be better, but the controls are far away than eachother it felt a bit hard, but nice work!
Do you mean keyboard controls? If so, they're just WASD for movement, 'J', and 'K' for jumping and shooting. Thanks for playing our game.
I like the theming of the curse Egyptian temple and I liked you had controller support. I found it interesting to have the rooms randomized because I died a lot I think I saw all them. The final boss was a bit on the easy side. But still nice entry.
Thanks for playing. I was going to make the boss harder, but during testing I noticed some of the rooms were very punishing so I didn't end up increasing his difficulty by much.
I liked the mysterious intro, and the hieroglyph style background tiles are neat, too. Very atmospheric music, although sound-wise it has a certain scratchiness at times that feels kind of unpleasant to my ears (maybe some sounds on the noise channel?) The map felt labyrinthine (complimentary), so I was convinced I was getting lost, but I think I stumbled on the boss faster than I was supposed to? (Not sure it was a bug, but the boss mostly just stood there waiting to be shot at.) The health bars and the bright character outlines kinda make it feel more modern than an NES game.
Thanks for playing! The boss should be 5 rooms from the entrance. It's meant to feel "maze" like, but it's on rails. The boss is easier than the rest of the game, given the wrong levels, it can be pretty punishing. They're chosen at random so every playthrough is different. The boss does throw projectiles and does summon mummies, but being a jam game, we didn't want to make it too difficult. I do agree about the health bars, I wanted to switch the bar out for some pixel hearts or something, but didn't have the time for it.
Ah I see, didn't notice the randomness/on rails part cause I guess I got lucky on the first run. ;)
Really nice game with a HORRIBLE CURSE mechanic. It's quite satisfying that the game isn't overly difficult (except for the sand tiles, which can sometimes be a bit confusing). The music really brings you back to the NES era :)
Thanks for playing! Yeah, I discovered the tiles were confusing as I was doing playtesting towards the end of the jam so it was a bit late to change. It's easy to navigate when you have visible collision shapes on haha.
Really fun platforming game! Keep up the good work :)
Thanks for playing!
