I absolutely loved this (it's my favorite jam game so far), amazing work! The atmosphere even just from the main menu was so good, the visuals and the texture you gave to all of the documents were so beautifully done. Great storytelling and premise, and some of those notes hit really hard - Echoes of the Prodigy and Liar were my personal favorites, and the spellings in Mercian's Letter just melted my heart. Some really interesting twists that made me gasp out loud too, hehe
I could gush about this for a hot minute lol but I do have a couple of notes! Like others have mentioned, I also ran into those 2 broken jumps in Death Records and The Great Houses. The other things are about the music - I love the tactile sound effects but I would have really enjoyed continuous music to go with them (though I imagine this might have been a time thing, I know we had trouble figuring out looping music in our game). On top of that, I think layering the Beethoven with ambience is clever, but the ambient track used was a little bit too tonal/musical in the bass, which would probably have been okay if it were in the same key, but I found the dissonance to be distracting while reading.
Overall, the game is visually stunning and the writing is really compelling, I'm looking forward to playing more of this in the future! :D
Thank you for the detailed review and kind words! They made me smile :)
As for the music, it was done last minute, and it's definitely high on my list of things to change before I update the game. Your feedback also reminded me that I should add an options menu so players can adjust the music and ambient track to their liking. Thanks again for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed my game!
I really liked the mood of the game, I believed it's a truly unique submission for this jam. I'm curious to know the rest of the story, hope you'll develop it further
I loved the writing and the interface details; they really make you feel like you're handling actual documents.
Personal note: I come from a family with a history of mental health issues (a long story I’d rather not go into details), but I really resonated with the narrative. Of course, there’s no supernatural element, but some of the dialogue strongly parallels things I’ve heard and experienced firsthand.
A few minor critiques: While the writing is excellent, I’d try to mix up the gameplay a bit by alternating long blocks of text with visual materials (e.g., old photos, artifacts, etc.). Otherwise, the pacing feels a bit too slow—after all, it’s a game
But those are just small details; I really enjoyed the experience. If you ever release an update, please let me know! 😊
Thank you for the feedback, it really means a lot to me! As for adding more visual material, I totally agree. The time constraints made me focus more on the writing and code, but now that I've got those two (mostly) outta the way, I plan on focusing more on the visual aspect of the game for the next update.
I was not expecting a mystery game in this jam; this is such a nice surprise. I was not able to go too far in the game, cause I'm not a native English speaker, so reading a lot of text is exhausting (not your fault at all) But I wanted anyway to leave a comment just to salute the atmosphere you have created. The flip of the page is very satisfying. I want to try to play your game later, with more time to concentrate!
Thank you for the comment! It really made my day :)
As for not being a native speaker, I totally understand. My mom isn't a native speaker either, and she wanted to take breaks between sessions playing the game. That's why I'm currently working on a save/load feature so players can save their progress and continue whenever they want!
Great jam entry. It shows how much work has been put in order to create this story line with so much text in it. The contorls work fine and provide a nice feeling when going through your pages. Atmoshpere is 10/10. great work!
Loved the atmosphere of the game! Mysterious, sad, but also calming. I've always enjoyed these sort of database mystery games. Very reminiscent of The Roottrees Are Dead. The art and sound design are really well done. Makes flipping between the documents so tactile. Great work!
This is so cool! I played as far as I could, but as someone else said, I can't access "Egalith" or "Purity Pact" so I couldn't progress the game. Would love to keep playing this once there's a fix!
Thank you! Yes, the game is currently unwinnable :(. I just put up a note on the game page so people would know. I'm working on the bug fixes now, and will update the game as soon as the game jam voting period ends (there is also a ton of lore that I didn't have time to write, and it'll all be added in the update, as well as more art and illustrations). Thank you for taking the time to try out my game!
This is such a unique game, the 'art' is unbelievable. How did you manage to make the assets look so paper-like?
Thanks! Krita's watercolor paintbrushes really came in handy for the paper texture ;)
Hello loving the game so far. But i got stuck after 2 bugs, not sure if i can proceed without these documents.
Bugs: Some jumps from document to document don't seem to work, and they also count toward the current opened documents, so every bug I found slowly lowered my limit of documents that I could keep open. I did later find out that these documents were sort of invisible, so I managed to close them by randomly right-clicking around. The document jumps in question are: from Death Records to Egalith; from Great Houses to Purity Pact.
Hope you can fix them so i can continue playing and make a full review.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll check it out and see what's causing the bug
This is really really cool and intriguing to read through! Nice stuff!
THIS IS SO COOL! I love having to look through all these old documents to figure puzzles out, it really reminds me of Strange Horticulture. You should be incredibly proud of yourself to finish this in such a short period of time!
Thank you for the kind words!
