The art style was cute, especially the player seagull. I had trouble navigating the invisible platforms and interacting with some npcs. I eventually clicked on everything obvious but I don't know if it was a bug but couldn't finish the game. I didn't even realize the "wrong" items were coming from each thing. Made perfect sense while I was playing! XD
Excellent short submission! the controls feel a little weird, i didn't realize i could jump up to the mermaid my first try, but once i figured it out this was a cute little experience. c: excellent execution of theme and limitation!
Suuper cute lil game, and I really liked the art for it! The little twists were fun as well.
Cute little game. I loved your gull :D Great little game jam. :D
This game is so incredibly cute, the art is great and the interaction are really nice too and the limitation is there as well. I got so many sandwiches im a very mean seagull 😎
Thumps up for your first effort. Fishes coming out of plant , money from water, fish from mermaid - all shows the limitation fits perfectly. Nice try:)
The background was soooooo pretty! Your game would've visually fully win me over, if you used that same art style for the front plan too! I really liked the absurd aspect of the game too, for a first project it is really well done, congrats!
1 little regret gameplay wise before I leave: the kid asking for money is placed after the money spot, in those kind of games, you early start to interact with everything regardless, so by the time I met him, I just gave him the money without having read his request before hand.... 🤔
Cute art and game too!
I do not know why, but when I give all the money to the sand castle dude and he asks me for the seashells, I cannot give it to him, and I took them, maybe an inventory to know if you have them or not would be nice! And maybe a text that shows you that you can interact with the characters would be nice too.
Hehe thanks so much for playing! That is actually part of the limitation. You see, I thought it would be funny if coconuts did not come from coconut trees, and it evolved from that idea. And you are absolutely right about the interact text, will definitely add that next time. And I did think about adding an inventory to give the player more control of how they should interact or to least see what they have collected and let them guess what the NPCs really want, but I sadly did not have enough time... :3
It was cute! Good job on your first game! You already got some great feedback, I'll add that the area collision for dialog could be bigger--I had some trouble finding the right spot to trigger it. Some sound effects for picking items up or receiving an item or giving an item (jsfxr is a good site) would help with giving the player a cue for what's happening. It's better to "show, not tell", like in your page description. I'm still learning that about design, with the End Goal of design being you don't need a tutorial if it's designed to be intuitive. Take care.
Thank you, thank you! I really did not expect to receive so much valuable feedback let alone have people play my first game! I actually had some issues with the collision being too big/small, I have yet to find the ideal collision shape. And my boyfriend (sound master) would be so happy to hear the need of sfx! He for example made the sand walking sfx with a box of bulgur and also insisted I added some click sfx but that somehow did not work during implementation, I need to do some more research on that :(
Nice job. For a first game, you did well. Plus it stars a seagull, so what's not to like?
As for a little feedback:
- If you added something that made it more visually clear which quests you have and haven't completed their quest for yet (like a glow around the character or object) that would help make things more clear.
- I think you played well into your art style, resulting in a bit of personality from the visuals.
- more of a minor nick pick, but if you had your character sprite swap to a swimming animation when on top of water, that would sell the idea of the seagull traveling across it better than just literally walking on water. You might even be able to have gotten away with just sinking the seagull's feet a bit more in the water to sell the illusion of it swimming without changing sprites.
- Another nick pick: I think you could have gotten away with adding some dialogue to the mermaid before giving you the seashell.
Very cute! The text at the beginning is kind of hard to read, it was blurry, at least on my screen.
I liked the style, but the screen felt a bit too cluttered, so it wasn’t always easy to understand what was happening. But I really liked the seagull! On my side, the seagul was shaking when moving (because of the camera maybe?)
Cute game! I managed to get 7 sandwiches. I like the parallax and overall synergy of the pixel art with the audio and the seagull looks cool!
