I love your art style!  The gameplay took a little bit of getting used to, and while it's fun, it does get repetitive later on.  One thing that might help this is if you varied the amount of time before the mouse appears / disappears, to add a little bit of unpredictability.  Sound effects are good, but I think a little bit of background music would also help to add to the atmosphere.  I was a little nervous reading the instructions when I thought I would need to use all of arrows and spacebar and mouse at the same time, but it turns out it works with just arrows and mouse.  Also, very cool to have written this in Scratch; it looks great.  Nice work!

thank you so much!! yeah there really isnt much overarching progression in the game so i honestly agree with all the critiques about it getting boring haha. the prey IS supposed to have variation on the amount of time it takes before it appears, but it's done with a "wait (pick random 3-8) seconds" block which doesn't seemingly produce very different results each time. also that nervousness is so fair, originally the game DID require using mouse, arrows, AND spacebar, but that proved annoying for everyone i got to play it so i added the mouse controls to all the spacebar sections for that exact reason. it was done in a sort of backtracking kind of way so the instructions did turn out kinda messy. also i would definitely have added background music if i had more time tbh!! youre very right that it would improve the atmosphere!!!

Oh, this looked really promising, with the homemade, handdrawn, made with love visuals. But the controls… they are almost nice for left-handed people, but even so they’re not perfect. Ideally, the controls for someone who isn’t left-handed would be WASD + mouse and spacebar. As it is, it’s really awkward to work with arrow keys (right hand) plus mouse (left hand) plus spacebar (in what hand?). I think you should experiment with different controls schemes.

Would you be interested in adding controller compatibility? Perhaps one of the joysticks could work as a cursor. Or you could use the arrows in the keyboard to move between the screen coordinates, and split it in an implicit or explicit grid, and then ZXC to use as action keys. As it is, I’m not sure how to play. It’s not intuitive controls-wise.

oh damn im so sorry!!! i didn't even consider that it would be inaccessible for left-handed people that is so so so my bad. i don't know how in all my years of life i never realized that WASD served such an important purpose i feel dumb omg i'll definitely keep that in mind for future games. but yeah, initially the controls were very much just me making shit up disjointedly, but as i watched some of my family/friends play it i quickly noticed how much the space+mouse+arrow-keys combination thing sucked, so that's why i updated all the spacebar-controlled parts to be interchangeable with just clicking the screen. i find it to be a lot easier to play now that you just pan the area with arrow keys and use your mouse for everything else, but i also think the way i worded the instructions ended up kind of convoluted and garbage for expressing that, so i get why it still wouldn't be very intuitive. as for your suggestion of controller support, i think that's just a bit too far over my head lol. this project was made in scratch and is held together with duct tape and dreams, i wouldn't even know where to begin if i tried to add any kind of grid or whatever. the scrolling background is a bunch of clones manually placed in the correct locations with one big math equation and the prey that spawns in the snow is its own separate entity that moves with its own independent control script in tandem with the background and like literally until the last second of the jam, the game lagged to an unplayable extent whenever prey spawned and it fell apart if you stopped moving at the wrong part of the background and just overall its ultimately very much just. hobbled together or what have you. i know there are certainly some add-ons for coding controller support in scratch, but i have no clue how i would ever integrate it into the existing game. also, thank you for the love on the visuals!!! i'm glad they've gone over so well with all the people who play because i really felt like i slacked on them haha

*just reread your comment before posting this and realized i misunderstood what you were saying about left-handed controls whoops disregard my opening line. i never realized WASD was the preferred controls for right-handed people before because i've always felt the opposite way! that actually makes so much sense now that i think about it, especially when i pause to imagine what this game is probably like when playing with an actual mouse and not just a mousepad (...i honestly forgor to consider that playing it on a laptop would notably affect my experience with the gameplay). point is i guess my control preferences are kinda odd and i didn't realize it :( sorry for your experience!

Was this made in scratch! That's so cool!
I love the art style so much, especially the cursor and the owl, they're so cute!

The initial idea is strong, but the game play does get a little monotonous after a bit. Different types of prey with different windows would help. And regarding audio, background music and pitch variation would also help a lot.

Developer

yes it was, thank you! i definitely agree with your critiques, i certainly sacrificed some aspects for the sake of just getting it done in time. i think if i worked on it for longer i would have added more variety and better sound design :p

I really like the art style of the game! The Owl POV was also a really cool idea. It fits well with the theme.
