Fun but really tough! Loved the dialogue

Developer

Thank you!

Wow ! for a foddian game, the controls were extremely nice! the variable jump height is PERFECT for how the game functions, the respawn mechanic is at the same time my saviour and my biggest enemy, but the difficulty is brutal! I have gotten pretty far I'd say, but once I fell to nearly the start of the game, I had to call it quits due to time spent. the sprint was very useful too, but the one thing that has annoyed me (and i dont think is intended to) is the fact that when I land on an angled surface the character will, naturally, tend to wobble around, and due to the fact that the controls seem to be connected to my angle, if I land on a platform, but my character leans a little too far in the back, will cycle right off of it! I don't know if there is any way for you guys to get around this with the current control scheme. Regardless, I had a lot of fun!

Developer(+1)

Yeah the difficultly is very hard. We're thinking of adding more spots where if you fall, you don't go all the way back to the beginning. The character cycles in the direction you're leaning in even if you've just landed from a jump so the best way to stop this is to lean the opposite way or upright when you're mid-air so you don't pedal off the edge when you land. The controls take a bit of getting used to but it's certainly doable. Thanks for playing!

It's so unique! I'm not particularly good at it, but it's so addictive that I've tried it many times, because that little wobbly guy is just so much fun! You did a great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed.

It was great and a very fun idea! Definitely gives me big Happy Wheels and Getting Over it Vibes! Definitely difficult as well, which it should be for a game like this, and I very much enjoyed the visuals! Very Good Job!

Thanks for playing, i'm glad you liked it!

I had a lot of fun with this game! I was so surprised that the unicycle worked so well to control, good job on that! I made it to the spinning windmills, but failed on the third one and fell to the bottom haha, sadly don't have time to re-do it all, but it was a very fun concept. I'm assuming you're going the "evil" route without checkpoints, but I personally think it would be great with soooome checkpoints. I do also agree with some other reviews that the font was very hard to read, but other than that I think the game was great! I'm giving it 25/25!

Developer(+1)

Woah thanks. It's impressive that you made it as far as you did. How long did it take you? I'm afraid we're pretty set on the "evil" route lol, in keeping with the foddian tradition. After all only the most devoted of followers are worthy to join the cult of unicycle island. Thankyou for the kind words and feedback. We will be sure to change the font as soon as the jams over lol.

Submitted

It actually went super fast haha, I fell maybe 1-2 on the way and it was just minor falls. I do have 50 clears in Getting over it for what that's worth, and I've beaten jump king, so I'm used to these "rage" kind of games haha, maybe I'll take the time to beat your game one day! Good luck on further developments!

Developer(+1)

Damn that's impressive. You're true gamer my friend. Thanks again for playing. we're planning on polishing up the game here on itch and then potentially working on a full steam release with an even bigger level and a bunch of other stuff like different kinds of unicycle.

This is great!! The mechanics of leaning to move is super clever and is very well implemented!! It's very much giving getting over it vibes!! Great job!!

I do have a little bit of feedback and I also think I encountered a bug:

I found the font that you used for the text a little hard to actually read, this doesn't take away much from the game though I just wanted to point it out.

And while clearing the very first rock I found myself struggling because I couldn't seem to actually jump high enough to clear it? Eventually I passed it because I fell but my body fell right of the rock and the unicycle to the left and I ended up respawning where my body was so I had passed it and suddenly I jumped a lot higher? I don't know if I was supposed to be able to jump higher from the start or if after falling I somehow got stuck with a higher jump than I was supposed to have but I will say that the higher jump was definetly better! :P I don't think I would've been able to clear as much as I did if my jump was stuck being as low as it was at the start.

I didn't finish the whole thing because that would clearly be a lot of work but this is still a great fun game! You guys did a great job!

Developer

A lot of people have mentioned that the font is hard to read and we have changed it to the font that is on the itch page. I will upload a new build after the game jam ends.

As for the bug, it seems quite odd. I want to explain how the jump height mechanics work incase it isn't a bug. In the game, jump height is affected by 2 main factors. The angle of the player impacts jump height which is mentioned in the opening dialogue "And remember, you can jump higher when you’re upright." However, I should have considered the fact that not everyone wants to read all the dialogue and might skip past this. I should probably also mention this somewhere that the player is less likely to miss. The other thing that affects the jump height is how long you hold the spacebar down for. Holding it down for longer results in a higher jump. I didn't think to mentions this in the game as it's a common mechanic is many platformers. However,  I think I should have mentioned it anyway since some people playing the game may not have played many platformers before and might not notice this.

Do you think the odd jump heights you experienced could have been caused by 1 or both of these factors or do you think it is likely to be a bug?

Submitted

I did read the part about stanging up straight but didn't really time my spaceball holding. Let me see if that was it

Submitted

Yeah so I tried again and I could clear the rock fairly easily, maybe I wasn't pressing long enough at first and didn't realise

Developer

I thought that might be it. I'll make sure to make it more obvious in the game when the jam ends.

Submitted

Didn't beat it, but the mechanics are smooth and can be mastered, and the theme was pretty spot on for the jam! I liked the music and the character sound effects as well.

Developer

I don't think anyone outside of the devs has gotten close to beating it. It's very difficult and quite long (also there's a bug near the end that makes it impossible but this will be fixed in a post-jam update). Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for giving it a spin!

Submitted

It’s hard to balance the character, but I know that’s part of the game. I like the detail where the screen zooms in when the character falls, The character’s voice is also funny and fits well… 😄⭐

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it

It's hard. I got to the third wait, and fell down to nearly the beginning of the game. That felt really bad, and I quit. It doesn't feel like that section respects my time as a player. I don't want to play through the entire game again to get another chance at a tough spot. It is also really really hard to build momentum on a sloped surface, which is most of the game. It feels like the sprint should be the default speed, and sprint should be a speed above. I found myself holding sprint nearly the whole time.

Developer

Wow, you actually made it very far. I understand not liking that you can fall down really far but this is by design. It supposed to be similar to games like Getting Over It and Pogostuck. But these types of games are certainly not for everyone. Maybe it should be better explained in the game but your acceleration is based on the angle you lean. Acceleration increases up to an angle of 45 degrees. You will naturally go slower up hill as you have to overcome gravity. You do have to hold sprint a lot but I don't think the player should be able to go faster. Maybe there should be an option to have sprint the default and you can hold to walk

I liked the game, reminds me of those flash rage games like Happy Wheels. I wish I was better at it though. The art is great, and the animations are also well done. Good job!

Developer

The way all the body parts of the player fit together was inspired by Happy Wheels. I actually barely had to do anything for animations since it's all physics based but it still looks cool. I'm glad you enjoyed.

Submitted

I was so bad I got banned from the cult. Didn't even make it outside the group. Reminds me of that mini-game in Lego Party with the unicycle.

I love the art style and the humor. The 2d ragdolls are great with this kind of game. Solid jam entry!

Developer

Thanks for playing. Everyone seems to be struggling with the difficulty but that is by design. Haven't played Lego Party. I'll have to check it out.

Submitted

This game combines movement on a unicycle with “spin-to-win” mechanics. I actually like that the controls are tricky. I also enjoy the moments when the guy looks right at you after messing up lol. Great effort!

Developer(+1)

Haha, yes the eyes aren't even programmed to do that. The pupils have zero gravity and just collide with the edge of the eye.

Submitted

ooof, I am terrible at games like these, but I gave it a go.  I got as far as this staircase thing right after unicycling up a tree before I called it quits.

I feel like the art style is actually a good match for the game.  It's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea but I think for the tone of the game it's a good fit.  The googly eye animations on the main character were an especially nice touch.

Developer

Making it to the staircase is honestly not bad considering the difficulty. Completely agree about the art style. I think it fits well with the goofiness of the game. The same goes for the googly eyes :) Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Fun little QWOP-esque game.  Controls were hard but clearly on purpose, good job!

Developer

Thank you!

Submitted

this one of those games I would love to play co-op

Developer

Would be really cool to have a coop mode yeah with everyone smacking into each other. Not sure how easy that would be to implement tho lol.

Submitted

Extremely difficult, successfully pissed me off. Cool artstyle and music.

Developer

Thankyou for your suffering :)

Submitted

A really cool idea. And great job on the uniwheel mechanic! I can see how this could become one of these "getting over it" style games. Enough potential for rage moments and a move mechanic to learn.

The only thing i would overwork slighty would maybe be the jump. Felt like u can skip many pbstacles by just spamming jump. But that is just polishing.

U did a good job there and i think it could be worth it to keep working in this game :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback. That's a good point about the spam jump. There is already a jump cooldown of 0.25s but maybe it should be longer. We're planning on adding some updates to the Itch version to add polish and fix bugs and then potentially making a full Steam release after with additional content.

The controls feel extremely good, it's satisfying, but definitely difficult. I also love the humor. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much!

Submitted

Hard game but with a good idea, im not a fan of the artstyle though

Developer

Thanks. Yeah, I can see how the art is not to everyone's taste so that's fair enough.

Submitted

Very challenging! I'm pretty bad at this, but I love the unicycle physics. The gameplay is very well executed. I think this is a good take on the theme as well. The intro cutscene was very fun, although the font is a little hard to read at times. I like how cohesive the visuals are. I also think they're a great fit for the game especially in combination with the audio. Audio is perfect and I think joining the cult of unicycle island is VERY SERIOUS. Absolutely immaculate job on this!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it. A lot of people have been commenting on the readability of the font and I agree it's too hard to read. I will change it after the jam.
