HOLY UNDERRATED

Found this game on random, and it's amazing.  The artstyle is awesome, the gameplay is fun (though the controls were a bit buggy sometimes), and I love the voice acting. I will say I never really understood what the spotlights did, but I was able to beat the game regardless.

Normally I'd leave a longer comment, but it's really late and I'm really tired. Just know that it's 5 stars on all fronts; maybe I'll leave something with better feedback tomorrow idk

Really awesome game you two have put together. Shame it hasn't gotten more ratings

THANK YOU!!! We ended up really busy during this judging period, so I think our lack of ratings is mostly from us not posting it anywhere or interacting enough tbh :((

Thank you so much for playing :))

Looks very pretty!  I love the cel-shaded art style.

Thank you!! I was scared at first as I'd only done shaders in Blender and didn't realize Unreal was mostly PBR focused, but Gothbard is an Unreal wizard and did em with both a world space shader and post processing for the cel lines. Wouldn't be a game jam without an artist getting saved by a programmer lol

Thanks for playing :)

Its only because this game is so well made that I can give it notes like I am about to, Its a great game! Many things to love about it. SPOILERS AHEAD: so go play the game, it'll be worth your time I swear.

This is a really neat concept and like the other commenters have said I really only had to jump for most levels. I think the first time I felt I needed to use the newtons 3rd law box trick was on about level 8 or so.

Level 9 was quite frustrating, there was two vocal cues one about the spotlight and one about using the thing to move the box and i spent a minute trying to box through and then myself too somehow, the thing I didnt realize was the translucent blobs were not lethal to me (I now assume they are like fizz grids from portal) so i just jumped through and completed the level and its only upon reflecting upon this as I write I realize the idea is to pass the box to yourself to complete the jump that comes after, which is a really neat idea! Shame I didnt get to experience it that way :(

In fact every room it almost becomes easier to simply jump than to engage with the mechanic which is such a shame, room 11 I spent an attempt or four failing to use the fire extinguisher and upon accidentally throwing it into the danger zone I just jumped and wasd'd my way to victory (there's a straight shot to the opposite platform and then to the switch and back)

The last level I couldn't beat, it was abundantly clear that I needed to somehow break the glass but I had no idea how, I tried throwing spiders at it, the box at it, I tried jumping at it , using shift,  everything I could think of and nothing worked which is really sad because I wanted to see the ending :(

I will say there was a neat moment wherein I used a box to push the spider out of the way so I could fly by which made me feel very clever.

The voice acting is really good and quite charming although I wish there was music or more sound ambiance when its over, there was one or two times when I took longer on a puzzle and it left a bit of dead air which made me feel lonely/awkward.

The voice acting is lovely, the spiders are very spooky and this is all-together a very polished game I just wished it made me engage with the parts of it that are the most interesting, the physics and problem solving.  I also wish it wasnt a download as this game deserves so so many more eyes on it. Keep it up and I can't wait to see what else you guys make!

Thank you so much! Both for playing and for the super detailed post! I admit we spent so much time getting the mechanics and assets in that level design got squished into two days and it's definitely the weak point, though it has made me very excited to go back and make some much tighter puzzles after the judging is over. (Also, sorry it took so long for me to reply!!)

This is a lot of high quality game to make with just two people in a week!  I'm incredibly impressed that ya'll made everything.  The shading totally removes the stock Unreal look.  You have excellent game feel, feedback, and sound implementation.  Really top notch voice acting too, fantastic delivery and great writing.  Puzzle games are very difficult to make on a jam timeline as well since they rely on playtesting so much, so I'm glad you kept them simple and more about execution.

Just two things from me:  The fire extinguisher still takes input after you throw it, so you can still spray once it's out of your hands.

The last level is tedious to start each attempt.  Getting out of the hallway and to the glove in forced zero G is clunky since you get stopped every inch or so by recolliding with the floor.  I don't know if there's a good mechanical solution to this that wouldn't trivialize the game, so I think you'd have to look to level design.  A bigger hallway and door to start that level would help a bit, but it would make it different from the other levels.  I would suggest moving the glove from close to the floor to floating somewhere not near the ground so once the player is out of the hallway they can jump straight in rather than wrestle with the floor stopping their momentum.

Really fantastic job guys, I look forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you!! We were very proud of the shading as we learned very quickly that Unreal and NPR do not get along very well, unfortunately we didn't give level design the time (or testing) it needed, and while I wish I'd figured it out sooner, I'm so happy to have learned it like this too.

The fire extinguisher thing I had no idea of until reading your post and that is really funny, we also noticed that our first instinct was to chuck the extinguisher away when trying to spray lol.

We did initially make it so that you didn't stick on floors at all, and then set it to the shift keybind as we kept colliding with corners that looked passable, to be honest just designing the level with that and scaling up the door is a much simpler idea and I wish I'd thought of that!!

Thanks again for the post (and apologies it took me so long to reply)!

very fun and stylish, love the VA

i feel like ive been somewhat cheating by just spamming the space bar to bonce off walls and gaining momentum in ways i probably shouldn't be able to

overall yall cooked with this one, great submission fr

Thank you so much!! We did find spamming to be an unfortunately goated strategy lol, but hey worst case scenario we put a timer on it and claim it was always a speedrun platformer >.<

A cool and tightly designed little puzzle game. I appreciated the corporate satire of the voiceovers. My only real feedback is that the weightless movement felt overly sticky when touching a surface in a way that wasn't super enjoyable, but it did make for a good puzzle mechanic. It's definitely one of the most polished entries I've played so far!

Really clever movement mechanics for your puzzle game here. Great submission!

I love how polished the game is! The voice acting is great, the levels are good too!

Really great atmosphere, graphics, and general art direction. Full voice acting was a cool inclusion! Although it did get repetitive hearing the same voice line repeatedly when retrying a room. Seems like a solid foundation with a lot of polish, even if I didn't really feel wowed by any of the puzzles so far.
