Oh, this is fun. I always love myself a good Gameboy jam game. Gameplay is simple but effective and I absolutely adore the dynamic scoring. Overall, not many notes here, just a pretty good entry!

Simple but effective game! Absolutely loved how nostalgic and classic this game was. Great job!

Submitted

One of the examples of Keep-It-Simple and it working really well! Great job!

Thanks so much for the kind words!  I appreciate you trying it out :)

Super fun nice retro game, all the sounds and music in the same scale?! So damn sick, killed it :)

First off, I'm incredibly impressed you wrote this in assembly. Second, wow this game was awesome! It's a simple concept, yet executed to perfection and I really feel like this captures the essence of a retro game perfectly. It's very polished from the animations, music, sfx, all the small things feel really intentionally designed.

On top of that, the gameplay itself is fun and addicting. I played for far longer than I'd like to admit, and I can say that it feels good and rewarding to get good at. It is very satisfying to dodge, weave, and block, all while rotating to generate score and keep your combo up. The different types of projectiles were also interesting challenges for the player to solve, while not feeling too overly difficult to where it made it unfun.

I made it up to when the music starts to change, I didn't get past that but I did break your high score :)

Thanks so much for giving it a look, and for the detailed feedback.  I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

And you beat my score?!  Guess I need to get back on the grind... :P

Let me know if you end up getting higher and I'll have to lock in again 😅

Unreal!

For now I'll just update the page giving you credit for the high score, but I'll be back (after I play and rate a bunch of other games first; I've got a long list of ones I want to try!)

:)

That's very nice of you I thought it was just a friendly competition haha. Good idea to put it on hold though I also want to spend more time trying other games

had a great run this evening to reclaim the record!  :)

i think it's fitting that you hold the record as the jam ends! congrats, that is an insane score and i'll return to this one day to take the throne back :)

This gave me the same type of joy I get from playing classic Tetris, so bravo! My high score was 182,606,566 (I hit max combo before the seekers started spawning, pretty proud of myself B)). I really enjoyed the risk-reward of chasing bullets while adjusting your shield. And the music was very catchy, great job on timing the bullets and floor colors to the beat.

Developer

Wow, thank you so much!  I'm glad that this was able to hit all the right nostalgic notes for you!

I was following the tutorial "a d for left/right" and then the aesthetics, the music, it all hit me and the controls from the old pokemon  games got redownloaded in my brain. Love it, had a blast playing this (i sucked tho), I am sure the colors on the gameboy look not as intense as they do on my screen, but the green squares messed me up whenever they showed up. Amazing work, great job!

Developer

Thanks so much for taking a look, and for the feedback!  I'm glad that the nostalgia factor seemed to hit home :)

And yes, the squares in the emulator are much brighter than they are on the actual handheld, and I can certainly see how they could be distracting.  I'm not sure I'm going to keep working on this post-jam, but if I do, I might add in some options for disabling or turning down some of the more distracting visual elements.

This game is amazing!! Its a fresh spinning take on a very old UI/control surface. I love that you got this running on real hardware :D

Thanks for taking a look, and for the kind words!  I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Neat little gameboy game~ The death animation is very dramatic ngl

Simple and fun gameplay with really good execution, this is awesome! I will be putting this game on my TI84

The most impressive game i’ve seen, it took a bit to get used to blocking with the shield to keep the combo but it’s great

I'm so impressed with your execution in assembly. I dabble in RGBDS, but chicken out when I decide to start a jam. This is so incredible. I enjoyed playing this. Congrats on your new Gameboy game!

Rad and fun. I love how the bullet hits become part of the soundtrack.

Submitted

cute little gameboy style game. I wish to see more content like power-ups or some special ability. Maybe you can add it in future ^^

WOAH, this is so cool! I can't wait to try it out on my actual GBC. I will say the difficulty is pretty high, but after a couple of minutes I was able to lock in, and it felt really satisfying to keep pushing for the max combo!

Submitted

I love watching the score number go insane

Submitted
