Nice writing for the story ! I like the graphics a lot, and the realtime aspect of the combat is cool!

Developer

Thanks! I think the setting/story is probably the strongest part of the project. Appreciate the review.

Man, the pixel art is amazing. I recognize this is a start and not as complete as you'd hoped, so aside the content/battle variety, I'll just say on the directional input with keyboard - it did seem a little stiff. I recognize it's based on a grid; perhaps banking a keyboard input within a certain window, to execute upon reaching the next block in the existing movement path, could go a ways to make it feel snappier? It's interesting that you can play with a mouse, too, though - I actually haven't seen that before in this style of game.

All in all, very comfy-looking RPG-style game. With your hub area, the artstyle (definitely), functional battle system and the lore, you've got a very interesting project on your hands. I'm curious what you'd do with the battles to encourage more consideration by the player? I was also curious about the crystals - I think your answer there is a good one. Looking forward to seeing what you do. Cool submission!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the well thought-out critique. Unfortunately can't take credit for the art, though I am working on modifying some of the sprites and adding my own as I go. You should check out the artists in the credits if you liked it though-- I agree that they did really great work!

For battles, I'm thinking the ability to target parts (it is a mech game after all) and adding a power management / overheat system.

Thanks again!

Pretty nice start to your project, well done.

Developer

Thank you!

The pixel art is amazing. The combat was too easy, though. I did not understand half of the meter at the top, and could just win battles by just pressing space bare repeatedly. Well, I know, it’s more of a demo… Still, I love the pixel art!

Developer(+1)

The combat definitely needs a lot of work and tuning. I have to admit that I just kitbashed together different sprites from different artists, so I can't take credit for the art. I am working on modifying some of the sprites now more in-depth for a followup.

Thank you for taking the time to play and comment!

Pretty cool. Remind me of Pokemon (kinda).

Great job.

Developer

Thanks! I'm taking a lot of inspiration from a game called Siralim, which is a monster-catching rpg, so that makes sense.

above your will you made something curious, cause it's like a dungeon crawler  (idk I had a flashback of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon) but the combat are outside, if it was voluntier it'd be very close Alice in Wonderland.

Great pixel art otherwise and kinda good taste that we can play using the mouse, make it easier even if yeah, there's lot of work to do, but it would be great.

What exactly was the will about artistic direction ?

Developer

I can see the mystery dungeon roots for sure. My artistic direction was mostly informed buy the mashup of prompts and the available art I could find / modify for the jam. I definitely think the battle art needs to be reworked.

Thank you for the review!

Seems like a lot of things are missing here, but really good effort on 2D art! Looks like a good start for a classic rpg.

Developer

Thank you!

Pretty good.  Nice art, cool sounding world building.  The battle screen is awesome!

Each of the three screens works well on its own, but the next thing is seeing them all work together.  Like what do all these crystals do in the real world? I must know!

Developer(+1)

I'm thinking crystals will be used to buy parts and upgrades for different mechs. I'm looking to expand some of the art and getting a mech garage system in place now. Thanks for taking a look!

Cool game! The thumbnail is certainly interesting. Is the art by you?

It's a shame this is only a demo; I would love to have seen it in its full glory-it has potential! I wish you luck!

Developer

Thanks! I hope to at least get in some  more level, enemy, and upgrade variety after the jam is over.

The thumbnail art is The World card from the Tarot de Marseille. The in-game character art is from https://finalbossblues.itch.io/,  https://arex-v.itch.io/ , and  https://marinesosa.itch.io/mech-assets. They do good work.
