That was a fun surreal experience. The gameplay adds to that) Art and sounds I think are the best parts of the game. Sadly I didn't connect with the story mostly because it was too short, but I get that it's still hell of a lot work for a two-wekk jam. Great job anyway!

Is the game framerate dependent perhaps? I can't get past the very first shmup section it's over in seconds-- I tried many times. Everything moves very fast and there's also full screen (intentional?) shader glitches which make it hard to see?

The insane vibe and art style is pretty neat. The colors are lovely. I'm unfortunately unable to play very much of it though :/ Good job completing a game for the jam.

Interesting take on alternative history and use of art. The gameplay, however, is a bit of a mess. Hundreds of missiles, touching one deletes you. A bit too hard, at least for me. I think I flew off the screen, and got lost somewhere, I guess you can fly indefinitely far. Increasing the view area, so that you can see more around (and have any space to dodge the missiles) would already improve things a lot. Visual effects (glitches) are a bit too strong. I think it has great potential as a visual novel, or maybe you can just change the gameplay a bit, it's very overwhelming.  Don't take me wrong, I can see some huge effort in drawing all the panels! Great job overall, good marks for visuals and originality from my side.

Well! It was quite an experience. First of all, the sound design is awesome!!! The chaotic graphics look really good, and it’s really refreshing to see something like that!

For a solo project, it’s remarkably well crafted. I didn’t really understand the full story, but I think adding one was a really good move, as it makes the player feel more involved in the game.

I figured out how to finish Yannis’s story by spamming jump and running, but Seok’s was too hard for me. I may just suck too much.

It looked kind of buggy in fullscreen mode, I don’t know why. Maybe it was my screen, but windowed mode worked better for me!

(also loved the anime style and how the mecha is moving lol)

Nice job for the jam !

I have to say this is a REALLY interesting game. The mix of North Korean anime, the Yom Kippur war and mechs is one of the most unique things I've ever seen and just by pure concept alone I love it!

The visuals are chaotic in a very beautiful and fascinating way which I love, very much feels in the vein of Ville Kallio to me which is neat. I admit I'm mixed on whether having the filter effects layer so much is a good or bad thing. Good in that it makes the game feel more chaotic, bad in that it makes it harder to read or play.

On the subject of gameplay, I also did not get to the end of Seok's story, even by trying to cheese by flying under all the enemies. I get that balance is hard in a game jam, I definitely didn't do it properly on my initial release, but this almost feels like an intentional shitpost in a way because there's like 100 ships on screen. So while interesting in concept, it didn't feel actually enjoyable to play and I never saw the end of that stoy.

Younis' story I did complete though, and it also had some very janky controls to it, to the point I'm not sure how intentional it was. It gave off the vibe of one of those cursed creepypasta sidescrollers like Sonic.exe, what with the combo of filter effects, chaotic artstyle and grim tone. On an atmosphere and visual level it was great, on a gameplay level it was at least completable.

Overall this has a great style and concept, and I honestly like how it tied into alternate history, I think in the future though there should be a little more focus on improving the base gameplay. I enjoyed this, great work!

Nice job on the jam!  The setting and the art style is really unique. Going for an alt-history angle is clever!

Within the framing of a jam, it may have shone a bit more if you picked one character story and polished that up. I was also kind of confused on how to progress dialog without looking at the game page, on screen control tips or  controls page on the main menu would have helped a lot.

I liked the visual effects and the shading on the art immensely! If there was a way to keep the VFX from obscuring the text I'd have no notes.

This is worth holding onto and polishing up a bit.  I'm not sure what engine you used for this, the action segments are good, they just need a bit of TLC that you may have not had time for during the jam. An interval timer for the projectiles would go far. I also got stuck mid kick animation on the second story so I kind of hovered to victory XD. I had fun!

It is worth hanging on to improve the action gameplay side!

The art is amazing! I love the gritty visual filters !

The sound is great!

You really nailed the real robot atmosphere, I could see me finishing such a story in one go!

Okay so I made it to the end of the Seok story segment, but I did so by flying under all the bullets and was treated to an image of Kim-Il Sung as a teddy bear.

Idk what’s going on but I know there is no way in hell you actually expect people to beat that section normally. There are hundreds of giant battle ship sprites jammed on screen constantly spamming missles and I think they respawn endlessly lol.

Was that a rushed attempt to add some challenge to the gameplay or was it an intentional statement of the overwhelming military force faced by the Arabs / North Koreans?

Either way it was extremely hectic and confusing.

The art style is very unique, but the visual glitches made it difficult to see the art and read some of the text.

I like the overall conpcept of the game, using short simple gameplay sections to supplement a visual novel style game with unique hand drawn art. But the current implementation definitely drags down the experience.

On difficulty It really depends.. on Younis Story I could work better on calibrating difficulty and make something intentional about it, but for Seok part not at all, It was for most a burnout side effect cause. I was working with clickteam fusion and many things i implemented wasn't working at all for reasons I can't explain, the engine in itself's a mess, a black box, It happens quiet a lot that a function doesn't work and if you delete it and reproduce It exactly the same way or works but it's impossible to predict why. The shoot them up thing was entirely remade from scratch twice and at some point i was late on my work cause i had to complete the Younis part, so I focused on it and did it, but the level design aspect of Seok was just a nightmare, nothing was working properly and it was rather way to easy or way too hard, so i prefered to make it "hard", even if yeah, it's not like some i wanna be the guy thing but... just a real mess and at some point i was just about to give up.

Otherwise, regardless of the engine, that was probably way to ambitious and i could make something cleaner with something with a lower scale.

Yeah I get it, we’ve all been there during a game jam. But the good thing is that you didn’t give up and managed to deliver so your next project will undoubtedly be better because of it

Pretty cool VN / Action sidescroller hybrid game.

I gotta say the setting and source inspiration is quite unusual and i’m quite stunned by the story you were able to tell with your own characters, while this being a spinoff of Squirrel & Hedgehog :o ?

I knew of that show’s existence from animation youtubers making some video about it, but i had no idea i’d play something based on it one day, really curious to what led you to such an inspiration XD

Anyway about the game itself : Your artwork is incredible ! plus the fact that you did all these by hand in Aquarelle of all things O_o that’s just insane dude ! This is really the highlight of your game no doubt, visually the only issue i’ve had was the “filter / effects” you’ve put on the story segments, it bleeded into the text a bit and made it a bit hard to read at times.

Gameplay wise, sadly the game seems to have quite a few issues, especially in Seok’s story. I just couldn’t complete the shmup segment, i spammed both the machinegun and missiles simultaneously while trying my best to dodge stuff but even when i managed to survive for a bit i still died anyway… so i wasn’t able to go further with him.

With some cheesing i was able to go all the way to the end in Younis’s story though :p a bit more manageable but the gameplay is still a bit rough on the edges still.

Despite that i’ve had a good time playing this, the unusual source of inspiration got me curious, the compelling setting and great artwork kept me playing.

I want to encourage you to keep at it, cause you have a cool base for a game there, the efforts and passion to build this clearly shows :)

Wow I absolutely love the art style and that you chose a real-life event to retell the story of. The audio was a bit loud at times and the combat can be kind of difficult but I was able to complete both stories! Incredible work on implementing your hand-drawn art into sprites and the story-telling with the cutscenes and imagery, the mechs and characters are so cool! I can't say enough how much I am a fan of your artwork outside the game as well. Well done and keep it up!
