BUMS – A faithful remake of the Commodore 64 classic Rags to Riches

Hi everyone!

I released the first solid version of BUMS back in November 2025. This summer, however, I finally added what I believe is the game's most meaningful feature: worldwide online high scores.

If you don't know the original, BUMS is a faithful remake of Rags to Riches for the Commodore 64, published in 1985 by Melody Hall Publishing and wrote by mysterious Bob Keener. You play as Bentley, trying to survive life on the streets of a big city and eventually become a millionaire. The game is universally considered a gem, because of its anomalous gameplay.

The original game had a clear objective, but once you reached it there was little reason to optimize your strategy.

Now there is.

Trying to make Bentley rich in as few days as possible finally has a purpose. Every in-game day counts, every decision matters, and if you manage to reach one million dollars, your run is permanently recorded on the worldwide leaderboard.

It's a small addition, but it completely changes the long-term challenge without changing the original gameplay.

If you're a fan of Commodore 64 games, retro arcade-style score chasing, or faithful remakes, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
