Digging the retro aesthetic and classic dungeon crawling vibe! The chaining of shield bashes was fun, reminded me a lot of playing Paladin back in the FFXIV days. Could use a bit of tweaking for some of the fights though. Overall I'd give it a "Why is mixtape"/10 .

This was very charming and cute! Always love a good retro vibe. Also very impressive to get something out in a week while relearning the software! The game does need some balancing with the HP values of the enemies/bosses, but I could see this being a short little game where the player is trying to get as deep as possible before having to leave and restock on equipment. Great work!

This was really fun and addicting!

The visuals and colours were a joy to look at, the sprite work was really good, you really nailed the retro vibe. Also the music was top notch!!! The combat was quick and snappy!

Unfortunately, like others, the game froze just after the fight with the demon, I tried loading my save multiple times but it happened every time, such a shame, I hope I didn't miss too much content but I'm still quite happy with my experience.

It was weirdly satisfying to hear all the footstep sounds when I grew my party haha.

Good luck with the jam!!!

The music in the title screen is so good. It almost reminds me of like a Tim Follin song. I also liked how the combat is quite hard, so that I am more considerate about my actions for every encounter.  Shield bash also feels quite fun to use.

Really cool presentation and soundtrack. Very punchy!

I played until the end where I encountered the bug where the final boss just walks into a corner lol.

He's as depressed about that bug as I am XD

This game is SO well presented and I am LOVING the retro vibe! I can tell this is a great game. Unfortunately, it's too hard for me. RIP my weak human body. :'(

That is definitely at the top of my list to fix. I need to make some major adjustments to the stats and damage calculations--I'm aiming for a pace of 4-5 turns max for a random battle, but my Orcs are apparently tanks. (Also, it is legitimately an honor that you took a look; I'm a big fan of your work!)

Thank you to everyone who has taken a look so far! Words cannot express just how much I appreciate the feedback (let alone people looking at my game T_T). You all have helped me begin plans for the first update to... y'know, let y'all actually hit credits.

I am so glad I saw that Toasty video the day before the jam and met you all. Here's to an awesome jam!

I was unable to proceed with the game further due to a softlock. Which is sad because I really liked the game! Though it's not with some cons.

First off, as mentioned by a previous comment, the game got too easy yet tedious as it progressed. Just as you get to the 2nd area, enemies deal only 0-2 damage. It's even made easier with Archer, whose Arrow Rain doesn't seem to cost any Mana though I'm not sure if it's intentional.

Outside of that, I love everything else about the game! The retro RPG vibes, the pixel art, the absolutely sassy protagonist, and even the design choice of giving each character only 1 special ability each. At first you would think an instant stun button would be broken, but at the beginning I was strategically using it either to lock down dangerous threats to focus on a different threat, or even stunning all targets just so I have time using potions.

Very great 9/10 game overall! I just wish I could listen to the mixtape further. :)

This is very high praise, thank you!

This is a fun little adventure. Retro vibe is well done. and i really like the choice of music.

Difficulty was just right imo especially for a game with this aesthetic. Enemies hit hard enough to punish you if your not thinking but dont feel unfair. However about halfway through the Deepwood area things just stopped hurting me.  0-2 damage every hit. Not sure why but it seemed to be all physical attacks. Even the final boss couldnt hurt me.

I really liked the simplified combat options and the emphasis on stuns in combat this was a really nice touch.

I found that the chests in the second level didnt give me any loot. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

I also thought the temp agency premise was a nice idea but scrolling  text at the start of the game is insanely fast - maybe i just need to git gud at reading.

This wasa a fun throwback to old nes RPG's which I love!

Neat retro game, the combat is actually hard, but thanks god the shield bash exist to stunlock the enemy xd.
i like the visual and music too

Thank you! I was hoping the shield bash would be balanced by the fact it's single target. 😂 Buuuuuuut there are flashbombs one can find for that sweet full-party stun!

Dungeon Dispatch Review (One Long Life)

Unrelated to the gameplay I have now developed a dislike of .rar files.

Thanks for helping me open the game XD.

First Impressions:

Very Classic Pixel Art JRPG  both in style and sound design.

Straightforward gameplay and theme. Pixel JRPG comfort food.

Mini Essay:

The gameplay is exactly how it looks. When I only saw screenshots I was

concerned with the layout of the rooms being too square and samey, however

the variety of paths made to these little square rooms instead transforms to a solid stylistic choice. The color management is also well done. All the colors in the art have a subtle warm tone giving the game an uplifting and hopeful vibe.

The storyline is a bit more on the rough side. Due to the font choice my eyes kept going out of focus when reading the opening scrolling dialogue. While this is a classic JRPG tool for exposition dumps, large bodies of scrolling text are also a very heavy way to start a game. Especially with a font that has even slightly lower readability.

That said the little god voice introduction to the central idea of Dungeon Dispatch is both light hearted and well executed.  The new map blurbs go a long way.

I don’t know if it’s common in old style RPGs to have no item description, still have no idea what half of the consumables do.

The combat system is both slow and fast at the same time. The art and animations are super solid and cohesive. The mechanics are .~*clean*~. and easy to understand. Your mastery of level design is praiseworthy.

My only gripe is more with the genre than this game in particular, enemies often feel quite “grindy” when it can take 10 or more rounds for a single instance of combat. Although I can’t remeber the specific person or blog I read this advice from, early game enemies are better off taking around 2 rounds of combat to defeat at most.

Monsters guarding some of the chests are a nice touch but many of the chests appear to either be empty or don’t show thier drops. This can be an easy fix if you turn “Chest Rewards” in to a common event in RPGMaker, either eventing a drop table or  making multiple CE so you don’t have to change the text and rewards of several dozen chests manually. Overleveled to the point of 0 player damage by the second environment, I started zoming out in combat and just spamming attack. If/When you update this game maybe reduce the duration of combat encounters, they really drag on. Also floor doors dissapear during combat.  Plus the 3rd boss walks into a wall and locks the game (game end?)

Great Game.  10/10 would play again.

Oh man, a gamebreaking bug right before the twist hurts my soul.  Guess what's going at the top of my list of fixes? 😵
