Nice work! Bummer that gamepad controls didn’t work but I still enjoyed it.

Developer

Ah, yeah, only had access to an xbox controller, so I was mostly using that.
Even more damning, the controller only worked in the "game" portion and not at all in the menu portion, so even with a controller the player had to switch between mouse and controller. Sadly I only noticed I'd forgotten the menu controls on the final day, and didn't have time to fix them.

I like the idea of Space Invaders with upgrades, but the upgrades felt a bit slow to unlock. After 3 games, I only had enough to get a marginally faster bullet. The fun content like weapons should be unlocked much faster for a jam game.

Developer

Yeah, balance was definitely the hardest nail for me to hammer down - there's never enough time, and I should have seriously done some self-inspection with respect to my own skill levels before I decided to resurrect space invaders (read: oh my god am I bad at traditional space invaders) - I kept flipping and flopping on the ramp up of invader difficulty and the pacing of weapon unlocks

I love this art style.

Background galaxy is beautiful and amazing. I wanna play on the desktop next time.

I had planned to add more to the starfield, but realized I needed to devote more time to the rest of the game. If you're interested, the source for generating the starfield image is as https://github.com/Habidakus/wild-jam-95-retro/blob/main/Scripts/board.gd - _create_starfield() around line 273.

I didn't think my lack of shooting skills would follow me into Space Invaders but it did. Pretty good game overall! It'd be great to get upgrades faster!

I mean, the description says it all! Very solid entry; it feels great and I ran into no issues while playing. The first time I accidentally shot an enemy bullet with my bullet and saved my own life I was ecstatic haha

my brain refused to read the rogue-lite part in the beginning so I was like "huh, space invaders?" but then realized that there's a whole sentence talking about this below the game windwos. really nice idea and visual execution. for the game jam I feel like it might have benefited from getting upgrades earlier / points a bit faster as to try out stuff more quickly. other than that really great job, also scope-wise for a team of 1!

Interesting concept!

Struggled to see the whole game space without a “fullscreen” mode

Otherwise, really impressive for a one-person project :O

Wow that was fun, spent way too long playing that one reached wave 36 I think and still did not get all the upgrades...

A little balancing and this game would be even better (the shields are too strong and let you just hide behind them and use them to destroy the enemies, boring but effective.

Great submission, best one I have played so far, keep them coming

Developer

Thanks! I envy your skill, even when I was testing the end game upgrades I was still losing too many levels, which is where I probably skipped on much of the balancing. I miss having a professional QA team. :) I suspect one of the things I forgot to add at the last minute was a scaling of the enemy damage against the bunkers, thus making the bunkers less and less viable for cover in the 20s and 30s.

Really fun game! Great job!

There is not many things to comment, it just works is a classic. nice twist.

A pretty cool game! I'm bad at it, but it was fun to play.

Day 2 of my working on this jam: "Why did I pick Space Invaders of all games?! I'm so bad at this game."

What a take back! Didn't had incremental space invaders on my bingo list! Very good! Had a lot of fun! :)

Developer

Thanks! I'm looking forward to playing your game.
