Thank You Everyone!

A massive thank you to everyone who played, rated, and left feedback on Don't: OBEY during the game jam! Seeing you all jump in, test out the mechanics, and share your thoughts has been an incredible experience.

What's Next? The Big v1.1 Update!

I’ve been reading through all the reviews and feedback, and instead of leaving the game as a quick jam build, I’m taking the next 2 weeks to build a major v1.1 Update to make this project truly complete!

Here is a sneak peek at what’s coming in v1.1:

Story Update- Endings, intro and lore drops

UI & Quality of Life: Enlarged text, improved readability, controls

Dark Mode & Visual Polish: Adding theme controls and polishing the atmospheric for a cleaner and  darker aesthetic.

Mechanic & Control Refinements: Smoothing the camera, Revamped the blink system, explanation in book page, and instruction polishing.

Stay tuned over the next two weeks for the update teasers and Thank you once again for all the support, it really means the world to me!!!

Yee asked, and yee shall be served. The gameplay is very refreshing as it is super original.  Perhaps having things in the room/get added if that doesn't go against what you want. More mechanics in general would be a huge bonus. There doesn't seem to be much of a story, but I was cut short, so for the ranking I'll just go with what you said in the response. The presentation was great except for one little bit, which I go over in the second paragraph. The creativity to me is off the charts. The animation, art and instructions/mechanic as well are all individually creative. I didn't feel very horrified. The atmosphere and the unknown are quite scary, off the top of my head, jump scares seem to be a good idea. I unfortunately don't quite find the relevance in the theme. I assume this to be partially because of how far I went, so in combination with the supposed bonus challenge, I didn't give low marks. All in all, it is an all rounder, I give this game a solid 8.3/10. Both it and you have wonderful potential waiting to be seized.

The first thing I notice is that the web page is very blank. At least having it in dark mode would be cool. Bringing up the book and having it stay on the screen is hard for my adhd brain, and it wasn't clear in the beginning what to do. I barely noticed the "press space to skip" text because it was so small. The blink looks weird when reading the page, especially while spamming, so I suggest disabling that ability while looking at the book. The shaking should also be explained by the book. The thing says not to look right, but when you close your eyes and turn to the right, it counts as disobedience, but you don't actually look at the right. All of a sudden I am at the "do not look left" part, and when I look to the right I just lose, so my session is cut short. This happened, I believe, after losing twice, although I don't remember the exact instructions, below 8. I do feel that the player isn't really given enough freedom in looking. I don't quite understand why you would have some needing to hold space and others needing to just click space, seems like you are making things confusing/overcomplicated/inconsistent for no reason.

The first animation was really cool. The art is brain candy. The whole gimmick of the game is incredibly interesting and a bit inspiring, I think. Giving the player a second chance was a good eye. It is nice that you can pause the game, but settings would be really nice. Having different controls, like both space and LMB skipping scenes, is both expected and a beauty to have.

Please do make sure to rate other people's games if you have time, including mine, as a courtesy. Everyone can learn a lot from studying other people's mistakes and perfection, as well as receiving and following constructive criticism.

Trazam-dev, thank you so so much for taking the time to write out such detailed and honest feedback. I really needed this for my next update since i want to revamp and polish the game to atleast its quality intended.Hearing that the originality, creativity, and art hit the mark means a lot to me as developing my first ever game was so hard!. The looking mechanics andUI notes especially the blink overlapping with the book reading, font sizes, and dark mode theme are spot on. I'm taking all of this straight into the post jam v1.1 update! Thanks for rating my game and for pointing out where to push the horror and clarity even further. Really really appreciate you!

The game turned out really well! You have talent; if you're interested, let's develop a game together.

Thank you so much for playing! I'm currently fully committed to a few solo projects on my road map, so I can't jump into a collab right now, but i wish you the best with your development! If you have a quick second, leaving a rating above would help out immensely!

I love cursed book style stories <3 this is a good take on it. The liminal vibes are also cool.

I am stuck when *spoilers*
My "partner" arrives and I have to keep looking at them. Am I doing something wrong or is that where the prototype cuts off?

Developer (1 edit)

First of all, Thank you very much, I appreciate you trying my game so much! And what instruction are you? Because...*spoilers*

There are three "Major" instructions that are about "looking",

If you have reached "Do not look away from him",  look at him and then when he disappears, just try to look around...you will see him!

If you have reached "Do Not let him get close"

You should look(point your mouse cursor) to him and he will move and teleport to different locations, so just point to him fast!

And the last one, "Look Only When he is near" is closing your eyes then you will hear him move, then only look when he is super close!

That's it, I hope it helps!

I am on "Do not look away", and I do see him even when he moves, but somehow my character still goes crazy and the game ends. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I would really like to finish the game!

Developer (1 edit)

Oh,hmmm...

I can think of two scenarios...

1)you need to blink(uses left mouse button, it is explained in controls page from the game), and reset your "panic state" which makes your character go "less crazy" .

2) after you look at him and he dissappears, you need to actually go to your leftmost and you will see him staring! And that's when you successfully obey the instruction!

When you mean "game ended", is it a crash or game over screen?

Oooh I didn't catch that is what blinking is used for. Thanks!

No problem! It's one of the few in this jam not made by AI and with some actual effort put in.

I don't usually reply to reviews, but saying that other people didn't put effort into their game, even if they did use AI assistance, is incredibly rude and does not belong in a game jam.
