This worked first try and it's fun, which puts it ahead of a lot of what I've played here. I clicked, I shot, enemies died, the score went up. Simple and direct. Also, building it on your own Usagi Game Engine is a point of curiosity in itself.
The title screen is one of the clearest in the jam. It lists all three powerups with icon and name (FIRE RATE UP, SCORE BONUS 100, PLAYER SPEED UP), gives the controls, and closes with STOP KILLING GAMES! in red. I went in already knowing how to play. The powerups on the floor having a blue highlight circle means you can see from a distance what's worth grabbing, and the arena with the checkered floor and machinery up top has a proper 90s shmup cabinet vibe.
Three notes. It's brutal. Enemies swarm and had me surrounded in about 10 seconds, game over at 200 points. A slower difficulty ramp over the first 20 seconds would make the curve feel fairer. The title screen has a vertical band of static down the middle and the background is half black half blue, which reads as a rendering glitch rather than a style choice. And I couldn't find a clear health bar, just a small green sliver above the character that disappears in the chaos.
Of the "simple games that actually work" in this jam, this was one of the best. Worth playing.
Thanks for playing .. and thanks for the feedback. There's a trick to the enemies... try standing still :D They're designed to make the player panic but you can get some breathing space if you just hold your ground and thin them out. You're probably going to get overwhelmed eventually but not before taking a bunch of them down first XD
It was a lot of fun, the sprites are well done, I liked the menu music, the shooting and exploding sound is satisfying, especially as it speeds and turns into a machine gun, and I liked the gradual increase in difficulty. Very well done!
Fun game!
I would like to see some animation for the characters, because the art for this game is really good!
Wow , that was intense! Really fun to play
Well rounded game with great polish! I think this has potential to become a full game.
Oh damn this game gets really fast really quick. I like the menu music, some BGM is sorely missed in the actual gameplay. The main menu in general is super nice, and the enemy sprites are sick.
I had fun! Pretty fine with my score.
The game looks awesome! Loved the visuals and controls feel nice. Around 1400 score I started to notice that enemies aren't very keen on approaching me. They must be shy.
Many thanks . Originally, the enemies had a short range attack but I removed it because it was annoying and not fun. its much more fun to me if I know I died because I made a risky move rather than being swarmed :)
This is awesome!
Nice game. I like the way the character's movement feels. Would love to see a boss fight in this! Great work
Lovin' it! <3
Really nice top-down shooter, and I love the Sega-Genesis game style title screen!
I think a good extension to the idea would be some sort of event system like waves or swarms or bosses, like the “survivor” genre (for want of a better term).
By the way, I really like the enemy movement are a bit unpredictable but still threatening, means more of the gameplay space is usable (for my entry I was very lazy and just made enemies chase the player with some inertia and ± some random angular differences in direction, which leads to the player just needing to run away constantly)
I prefer to get lots of fire rate, then stand in the middle and move my mouse in a circle. 😁
XD did you eventually give up or did the baddies get you? I'm itching to tweak but I guess I have to wait for the jam to be over :P
Awesome game! I literally spent a few minutes just vibing to the menu music, it sounds great! Fun gameplay too, great job!
\o/ thank you :)
Has that 90s arcade game feel. The robots sometimes spawn inside you so you just instantly lose health. Other than that a fun and simple game to play.
I know right?... its actually surprisingly hard to come up with a fun and fair enemy spawning system.. thanks for trying the game :)
It was too simple and gets a bit tedious, but the idea is cool
Thanks for the feedback .. I agree .. I very nearly didn't submit.
Liked the game! especially the 8bit sounds. really felt like an arcade game from the 90s
Many thanks :) that was exactly what I was going for.. I thought i'd failed miserably but here we are :)
Really cool game, but I think there should be more danger, because the strat is just to stay in place after reaching max upgrades and fire in a circle. More danger elements would give the player more of a reason to move around.
Thank you for the great feedback. the +100 bonus score was supposed to keep players moving, but I guess that might not be enough :D
It turned out really cool. The rapid-fire bursts were really fun—just blasting away in every direction.
I would have liked to see some bosses, enemies that shoot back, or different types of enemies.
But still, really cool.
My Score: 3370
quite exciting and challenging!
Thanks so much for playing .. my high score is 5540 ;)
This was good. Nice audio and visuals too. It's maybe a bit exploitable with high enough fire rate (stand in the center and aim in circles).
Thanks for the great feedback, that seems to be a recurring comment. i thought i had reduced the enemy Sin() radius enough, but maybe needs tweaking. what was your top score btw?
