Item lore not working?

Hello, thanks so much for all your work to resurrect this game!! It's amazing. A great service to the community and such a fun blast from the past. This was one of the very first games I ever played as a child.

How much item lore is required to actually be useful? I feel like it might not be working correctly... when I built my party, I had about 4 or 5 item lore total spread through the party. Started Valley of Dying Things and I couldn't identify a single object in the first storeroom... so I used the character editor to increase item lore. Now I've given everyone 6 levels of it and I still can't seem to identify anything.

It's been ages since I played this game, so maybe I'm just misremembering how much item lore is needed. But this seems a little crazy haha!

I'm on a 2020 MacBook Air, Intel, running OS 15.7.7. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I’ll ask some folks who played more of the original game how Item Lore is supposed to work. It seems possible to me that there is a bug here. I also have a wild guess that it might be more to do with your highest Item Lore score than your combined score. But I’ll look into it! Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks for your response!! I found an old post on the spiderweb forums that seemed to suggest that there was an old bug that made it individual rather than combined, so I'll play around with that.

The answer I found for you is that (in the original game) it IS based on the party total for the stat, but it does nothing for items that are pre-placed in a town or dungeon. It only works on items that drop.

I think OpenBoE is doing it the same as the original, but could double-check. This would explain why it’s not affecting the Fort Talrus supplies.

Ohhh I see, thank you!! Yeah I tried upping it to the maximum and noticed I still can't identify random stuff in chests, but it must be because it was pre-placed.
