End life plan
REGROUND will remain downloadable on itch.io after the jam. The game is fully offline and does not rely on servers, accounts, or online services, so the final build will always remain playable. I also intend to keep a downloadable Windows build available for preservation and continue polishing the game after the jam if needed.

Transparency note
This game was developed by me in Unity over the course of three days. AI was used as an assistant for brainstorming, writing some text, and helping with programming tasks. All game design, gameplay mechanics, level design, implementation, and final decisions were created and completed by me. No third-party gameplay systems or templates were used.

An extremely immersive game, the graphics and sound create the perfect atmosphere.

I enjoy games with intentionally wonky controls. When they're done right, as they are here, they're a creative way to add challenge.

When I finally managed to escape, reopened the game, and saw my time of 01:03.996 on the TV, I had a real "Oooooh..." moment.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to apologize to the next person who tries to escape after me. xD

This is the darkest and most creative read of the theme I've come across in the jam. Here the high score chase isn't fun, it's survival. In a jam about preserving games, turning the scoreboard into something dehumanising is a smart move.

The line on the corridor screen does a lot of work: "In REGROUND, records determine a participant's worth. Each new result replaces the previous one." Each new record erases the last one. That's lost media applied to people, and it's a great, frightening metaphor.

The environment is excellent too. Narrow concrete corridor, hanging amber traffic light, red carpet, and a phosphor green monitor reading PERFORMANCE RECORDS / RANK SUBJECT TIME / 01. SUBJECT-00 01:09.841. That monitor showing the previous subject's record is a brilliant detail. And the crawling mechanic being deliberately uncomfortable fits the whole premise.

Three practical notes. It's dark, not as dark as some entries but enough that I struggled to read the corridor geometry. The drag rhythm is hard to find, I did a lot of drag cycles without being sure I was making progress, so a visual momentum indicator would help you feel it working. And the window is wider than the screen, so the green instruction line at the bottom is clipped at both ends. The narrated intro also runs long before you get control.

Concept and atmosphere well above average. This is the kind of jam game that sticks in your head.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review. I’m really glad the core idea and atmosphere came across the way I intended, especially the concept behind the records and the environment.

Your feedback about the darkness, the crawling feedback, the UI clipping, and the intro is very helpful. Since the jam is still ongoing I can’t update the build yet, but these are definitely things I want to improve in a post-jam update.

I’m also happy to hear you spent time chasing a better record. That was exactly the kind of experience I hoped the game would create.

Thanks again for playing and for the thoughtful feedback!

Very well presented .. I loved the SAM speaks style voice synth at the start but I couldnt figure out how to crawl, only look oround

Developer

To crawl, simply hold down the mouse button and drag downward; this is also explained in the text that scrolls across the bottom of the screen during the game.

Game must explain the controls clearer, honestly. Hard to play with a trackpad.

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked the game's interpretation of the theme. The controls are actually shown in the scrolling text at the beginning, but judging by the comments, I definitely need to make them more noticeable in future updates. Thanks for the feedback!

It took me a second to figure out the controls (you need to left click and drag with your mouse) which I only was able to find out from another comment. Otherwise, it was a very interesting take on the theme, even if I was severely late to the door! Great job over all!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! The controls are explained in the scrolling text at the start, but I understand they could be easier to notice. The awkward movement itself was intentional, since I wanted crawling to feel difficult and exhausting, but I'll definitely think about presenting the controls more clearly in future versions.
