Hi! Using AI/LLM generated/plagiarized images is rightly considered wrong because of it stealing/data scraping from artists, lack of creativity and huge ethical & environmental concerns caused by data centers, & as an artist you are of course aware of that, which is why it’s a rule! Curious why is it allowed if used moderately in code or writing(the data that comes from artists written works are also data scraped by AI without consent)?
I get what you're saying and I agree it's not to be used for art or anything creative. Code is a bit iffy for me because I can't afford a team and some code (like asking for what variables should be added) or have it scan for bugs in the code
Although I never use it in any way that replaces human effort my games are all made by me
The thought of keeping it soley to human effort is good, but allowance of using LLMs/generative AI (Assuming that’s what you’re using, since they’re the issue but you probably know that Artificial Intelligence/an AI is generally a broad term that can apply to artificial intl programs that aren’t harmful. So if the programs you’re using are the harmless ones, sorry for the misunderstanding) in any capacity related to this still has the ethical and environmental concerns? Not to mention allowance of useage of it tends to also attract the same crowd who uses AI for art/writing because they don’t deem it worth the effort to learn.
For your issue of bugs or questions I understand(coding is tedious for me & I find it to be a pain. I’m still slowly learning but I use shortcuts & other people’s help mainly), there are dedicated (reddit mainly) forums & discord servers online soley for people to share and request code help & people will do it for FREE because they like helping. For a more consistent solution you can also search for a volunteer coder (people offer this on discord servers like devtalk). Obviously whatever you do is up to you & its your jam but wanted to share since I was initially curious but this put me off
Hi there, I'm the jam organizer, Manisha! When I wrote that specific rule, it was mainly because we could not monitor the use of AI in places other than art assets and audio. However, I do agree and appreciate your take and concerns regarding the use of AI. I will be updating the rules to reflect the standards that the other bigger game jams are establishing. I know this topic has had many mixed opinions before but I would rather lean towards creativity and learning than the opposite. Thanks for sharing!

We encourage you not to use artifical intelligence and/or generative AI in your game submissions. However, we are only able to monitor the use of AI generated images, graphics and audio assets. The game jam exists to encourage collaboration and refining our game dev skills.
Hi Marissa! Thanks for responding and considering it! That totally makes sense, I think most jams with a general “no generative AI” rule operate off the good faith assumption that for things they can’t check like writing & code, all they can do is just trust the person submitting the game. It’s something that isn’t enforceable or provable & is more just to discourage it
I already mentioned use of AI tools that aren’t LLMs/generative AI for coding (which have been used forever) & it’s not an issue with code specifically because the code is common knowledge/not intellectual property. The problem isn’t coding shortcuts/help/not having to code(said as someone who is using rpgmaker to mostly avoid the process)
As far as local inference goes I’ve never heard of it. If it uses the same vague reasonable amount of energy as most non LLM coding AIs/etc, then yeah awesome there’s no environmental issues. But being honest most people using chatgpt to get code probably don’t know what it is or use it
