[Feedback Exchange] Memory Training Roguelike RPG — Browser Based

Hello,

I'd appreciate feedback on a memory training game I made, It's a roguelike where combat is built around memorizing letter sequences.

In exchange I am happy to test your games as long as I can run them on my system.

🎮 Itch page: https://memodungeon.itch.io/memodungeon

💡 What I am interested in:

  • how easy it is to get started for a new player
  • how do you find the starting difficulty and onboarding (understanding controls, etc.)
  • how long do you find lvl 1 and 2, since these are the shorter ones, lvl 1 should be close to a tutorial feel with harder mini-boss
  • spatial lock picking challenges, these by design should feel easy and tax different part of your brain than the core combat challenge, I am not sure if I am fully happy with those, if you have any feedback
  • and anything else you can think of

Thank you for the help!

Hi, I played your game. Here is a recording of me doing so:

I liked the rpg elements is the game. seemed like you put some work into creating the dungon and the monsters. Clicking to move is an intuitive way to move around. took some time to understant what to do in combat, but think i figured it out. It was sometimes hard to enter combat, guess that might be a bug. the loockpicking was easy and yes, it felt good with something that wasn't to difficult.

You can find my game here: https://simenhs.itch.io/hexatown  If you could do a video recording when you play it it would be really helpful

thanks a lot!

just curious what is your native language?

that you started a new game but appeared in the same dungeon where you died with 0 HP is a bug

I'm norwegian

General thoughts

Playtime: about 10 minutes

The memory-based combat mixed with a roguelike RPG is a pretty distinctive idea. I like that you are taking something normally treated as a simple memory exercise and building an actual game around it. Though, I’m pretty bad at games like this so they’re usually very frustrating for me.

What worked well

  • The memory combat hook gives the game a clear identity.
  • Click-to-move feels like a natural fit for this style of game.
  • I like having things like the lockpicking challenges to break up the main combat loop.

What I would change

  • I would prioritize onboarding and combat clarity. The player should understand what they are supposed to memorize and how to respond almost immediately.
  • I would lean harder into making level 1 feel like a true tutorial, then build the difficulty once the player understands the rules.

Overall, I think the unusual combat concept is the strongest part but I’m not sure if the mechanics are tight/legible enough yet. I would mainly focus on getting new players comfortable with it as quickly as possible.

Please consider giving my game a try, it’s browser based with a tight 2-3 minute game loop: https://barelyplayable.itch.io/blade-baes-brawl

Let me know if you’d like an invite to try the invite-only full alpha build :)

I tried the game

  • It is easy to get started
  • Control is straightforward
  • Having ambience/music could be nice
  • Having plenty class option as guest player could be helpful to build interest. But that just me.
  • I interest to play more cuz its my kind of thing
