What makes your game "meaningful"?
Together with my wife we designed a system for dialog and I'm implementing it. Our vision is to make games socially useful.

It's OK - that's the risk with designing a custom dialog system.

Were the tutorial windows not good (enough) at explaining how it works?

I think it's the matter of too much being explained at once. It's a complicated system and every click gave new information about it.

Unfortunately couldn't get past the second part with the construction worker. After completing the sequence it got stuck on a screen of the background and none of the buttons let me continue on.

Ah, yes - the problem is that the image is blocking the map... And I commented out the listener on the image which removes the image. :X I have fixed the issue and will update the game after the jam voting period.

You can restart the game and chose to go to the tram stop (the yellow paint) - that is another branch in the story. There you have another conversation.

I look forward to reading your impression of the way the dialog works.

I tried going to the tram stop but that didn't seem to work either. Clicked each of the tiles of yellow paint but my character didn't seem to move.

Overall I found the movement a bit confusing and the dialogue system felt like you were pressing what you were prompted rather than being about making the correct decision.

If the quest for the construction brigade is not active, going to to yellow blocks would just open the tram map.

First you should click on the quest (the icon at the top center), regulate (or not) the emotion of contempt and then chose where to go. Yes, maybe it's a bit too complicated, I'll think about making it more straightforward.

"pressing what you were prompted rather than being about making the correct decision" <=== yes, for now it is more or less like that. I'm planning to expand it in the next few weeks.
